UFC Fight Night 78 Results: Ricardo Lamas Decisions Diego Sanchez in One-Sided Fight

The Ultimate Fighter inaugural winner Diego Sanchez dropped down to the featherweight division in hopes of making a title run at the 145-pound belt. He met fourth-ranked Ricardo Lamas in the UFC Fight Night 78 co-main event on Saturday in Monterrey, Mexico and was soundly defeated.

Lamas established his jab early and deployed a diverse attack against the durable veteran. He stopped Sanchez’ forward pressure with leg kicks and threats of a takedown.

In the second frame, Lamas hurt Sanchez with a leg kick. He followed up with combinations as Sanchez leaned against the cage urging him to come forward.

Lamas also won the grappling exchanges, although the fight was competitive when it hit the ground. They put on an impressive display of scrambles and reversals, but the fight was ultimately decided by what happened on their feet.

Lamas hurt Sanchez again in the final round with leg kicks. Sanchez fell to the ground. He quickly got back to his feet, but was bouncing on one leg. Lamas opened up a cut over Sanchez’ right eye with a spinning back elbow late in the frame.

Sanchez showed his usual toughness, but after fifteen minutes of fighting all three judges scored the bout for Lamas by unanimous decision.

“I want to first thank a true warrior, Diego Sanchez. I want to dedicate this win to my new son because Diego was my first opponent as a father. My family is my world,” said Lamas following the win.

Sanchez limped out of the octagon following the fight with the assistance of his team. The 33-year-old has lost three times in his last four outings.
