FIJI HAVE ANNOUNCED plans to lodge a complaint with the IRB against Welsh referee Leighton Hodges, who dished out five yellow cards to the Pacific Islanders last weekend.
The Fijians were reduced to 11 men at one stage in the first half ,with Akapusi Qera [on 20 minutes], Asaeli Tikoirotuma , Masi Matadigo and Nemani Nadolo all sitting in the sin bin at the same time.
A second half yellow card for replacement Sisa Koyamaibole meant the Flying Fijians set a new world record for the number of sin-binings for a single team in an international game. Italy, Georgia and England had previously shared the record of four.
However, Fiji feel they were harshly treated by Hodges and will be contacting the IRB on the matter.
We will take action against the Welsh referee,” said the Fiji Rugby Union’s acting chief executive, Berlin Kafoa. ”We have viewed the footage of the Italy game and think we should won the game if the massive number of yellow cards were not given to us.
“We saw the tackles were fair and the five yellows was unfair on us. Our international referees in Fiji are now viewing the video footage and then we will write a complaint to IRB.”
Do the Fijians have a point? Was Hodges too quick to show yellows?
