GK: Joe Hart - 6
Hart had little to do as San Marino failed to muster a shot on target. He was responsible for a small error with a weak kick, but will surely be tested in Montenegro on Tuesday.
RB: Kyle Walker - 7
A constant attacking threat, he created one goal and was involved in another. Defensively not hugely tested but used his pace to cover when San Marino did counter.
LB: Leighton Baines - 8
An impressive presence as he operated more as a wing-back, Baines constantly found space down the right, got a couple of assists and put in some dangerous set pieces. Better going forward than Ashley Cole, and could have earned himself a start on Tuesday.
DC: Joleon Lescott - 6
Performed capably enough although hardly had any work to do. Was not his usual threat at set pieces, getting his connections wrong, but that's not his job.
DC: Chris Smalling - 6
Like Lescott and Hart, had little to do but looked composed enough and should start against Montenegro.
MC: Tom Cleverley - 6
Was effective in his distribution but did not have that great an impact relative to the opposition. His match ended early, taken off as a precautionary measure after being fouled.
MC: Frank Lampard - 7
Named captain in the absence of Steven Gerrard, the veteran midfielder always seemed to be in the thick of the action and scored with a cool low finish, his 28th for England. Still an important player for his country.
MR: Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain - 7
A lively presence, the young Arsenal winger capably covered for his injured club team-mate Theo Walcott, scoring and getting an assist. Decision making poor at times, but technically and physically very good.
ML: Ashley Young - 8
Scored the goal of the game with a finish even Iker Casillas would have struggled to keep out. Dovetailed well with Baines, got an assist in addition to his goal and will surely start on Tuesday.
FC: Jermain Defoe - 8
Should have got a hat-trick, missing two late chances, but scored twice anyway and always looks good against weaker opposition. Likely to be used from the bench on Tuesday.
FC: Wayne Rooney - 7
Sat deeper behind Defoe, scoring a well-taken free-kick and helping Lampard score with a cool step-over. Also involved in Defoe's first goal, the Manchester United star will need to keep cool against Montenegro.
SUBS:
Daniel Sturridge - 7
Missed a sitter just after coming on but made up for it by heading in a similar effort. Always lively and will be pleased to have got off the mark for England.
Leon Osman - 6
Came on with Sturridge but did not have much of an impact. Decent distribution but mis-hit his one opportunity well off target.
Scott Parker - 6
Gave away a few free-kicks but was brought on just to rest Lampard's legs. Will have a great impact against better opposition.
