Luis Scola Biography

Though he's built a nice NBA career with the Houston Rockets, Scola has had his most success overseas and on the international stage. At 15 years old, Scola began playing for Ferro Carril Oeste in Argentina. He then made the jump to Europe and was named the 1999-2000 Spanish league rookie of the year while playing for Taugres Saski Baskonia. He was a two-time Spanish league regular season MVP and won the Spanish National Cup three different times. He started playing for the Argentinian national team in 1999 and has led his country to numerous medals. Scola played in the last two Olympics, winning gold in his debut and then bronze in 2008. He averaged 17.6 points in 2004, including 25 in the championship game against Italy. Scola was able to better his average in 2008, ranking third in Beijing at 18.9 points. He continued his success in world competition in 2009, bringing home MVP honors in the FIBA Americas Championship while averaging a tournament-high 23.3 points. His average of 27.1 points at the world championships in 2010 was a record by an Argentinian. In 2011, he led Argentina to gold and earned FIBA Amercias MVP honors with a tournament-high 21.4 points per game. Scola was picked by the San Antonio Spurs in the second round of the 2002 draft but didn't appear in the NBA until being traded to the Rockets in 2007. He has lifetime NBA averages of 14.5 points and 7.7 rebounds, having scored a career-high 18.2 per game in 2010-11 and 15.5 this past season.
