Philippe Gilbert Biography

While Gilbert remains one of the world’s top road cyclists, he’s learned to appreciate the sport _ and life itself _ more after dealing with a cancer scare in 2007. The Belgian, who finished 49th in the road race at the 2004 Olympics, missed the early portion of the 2007 season after undergoing surgery to remove a cancerous lesion on his thigh. Cancer free, Gilbert went on to win the prestigious Paris-Tours in 2008 and 2009. The first rider from Belgium to win all three Ardennes classics races in a single season, Gilbert earned the world’s No. 1 ranking in 2011 when he won four straight events (Brabantse Pijl, Amstel Gold Race, La Fleche Wallonne and Liege-Bastogne-Liege). Also in 2011, Gilbert won the four-day Tour of Belgium and the first stage of the Tour de France. Though he got off to a slow start in 2012, Gilbert finished third at the Fleche Wallonne in April.
