Jinnan Yao Biography
Yao burst onto the scene last year, winning gold on the uneven bars, balance beam and floor exercise in her international debut at the Cottbus World Cup, and then taking gold in floor and bronze on the uneven bars at the Doha World Cup. That served as a prelude to her first senior world championships that year, and she won bronze in all-around by finishing less than one point behind the United States’ Jordyn Wieber and Russia’s Victoria Komova - narrowly missing out on becoming the first Chinese gymnast to win the world all-around title. A fall on the balance beam during the all-around competition, which results in a one-point deduction, cost her the victory. Yao also took silver in beam and added a bronze in team competition at those worlds. She continued her roll this year with golds on uneven bars and beam at the Zibo World Cup. However, she was forced to withdraw from the Chinese national championships in May due to a knee injury suffered in training, though her coach Wang Qunce said the injury should not keep her from competing in London.
