Lauren Mitchell Biography
Mitchell became Australia's first female world champion in 2010 by taking gold in floor exercise, and she's looking to become the first Australian to medal in women's artistic gymnastics. The 2010 Commonwealth Games proved to be her personal tour de force, as she won gold in all-around, uneven bars, balance beam and the team competition, and added a silver on floor. More recently, she won gold on floor - her top event - at the Zibo World Cup in April and added a bronze in balance beam. Mitchell earned silver medals at the 2009 worlds in beam and floor, and she's captured seven golds, four silvers and three bronzes in World Cup competition. She competed in the team event at the Beijing Games, helping Australia finish sixth. In May, Mitchell was part of the winning Australian team that claimed gold in international competition at the Australian gymnastics championships. She appeared to be rounding into form for London at the meet - which doubles as the Olympic trials - posting the highest scores in floor exercise and beam during the team event. Mitchell has stopped competing on the uneven bars and chosen to focus on just the floor and beam leading up to the Games.
