Thierry Omeyer Biography
A former IHF world player of the year in 2008, the aging Omeyer will make his third and likely final Olympic appearance in London as he looks for one final shot at glory. Possibly the best goalkeeper in the sport’s history, Omeyer has played for France since 1999 and has won nearly every major honor in world handball. He earned best goalkeeper honors at three world championships (2001, 2009, 2011) and was the best goalkeeper at the 2008 Beijing Games, where his 41 percent save percentage tied him for the tournament’s best mark as France captured its first gold medal. Omeyer’s Olympic debut came at the 2004 Athens Games, where the French finished fifth. Omeyer was the lynchpin as France became the first team to win three major titles in three successive years - the 2008 Olympic title, the 2009 world title and 2010 European title, adding a worlds repeat in 2011 for good measure. Omeyer is planning on leaving German club THW Kiel next season to finish his career at home for his former club Montpellier.
