Prime Minister Gordon Brown and David Beckham will be at the Bird's Nest later as the Olympic flag is lowered and passed to the 2012 hosts with Britain delighted over their fourth place in the medals table.     10:10 - The last of the 302 gold medals at the 2008 Beijing Olympics goes to France as they defeat Iceland 28-23. Karabatic top-scores with eight.

  • Water polo

    09:55 - Hungary follow victory in Sydney and Athens with gold in Beijing. They end up 14-10 winners over the USA with Peter Biros and Daniel Rudolf Varga both scoring hat-tricks.

  • Handball

    09:50 - Iceland have equalled their country's highest Olympic achievement simply by making the final and guaranteeing themselves the silver medal, a feat last achieved by their nation in the men's triple jump in 1956. But gold looks high unlikely as they trail 23-15 midway through the second-half.

    09:40 - Roberto Cammarelle wins Italy's first boxing gold medal of the Beijing Games when the referee stopped the contest with China's Zhang Zhilei in the fourth round. Cammarelle was leading 14-4 at the time.

    09:35 - Hungary, chasing an unprecedented third consecutive gold medal and ninth in total, lead surprise finalists United States 11-9 entering the last quarter of the final.

    09:30 - Cammarelle is cruising towards the gold medal halfway through his clash with Zhang Zhilei, comfortably outpointing the Chinese boxer 11-3.

    09:25 - GOLD FOR USA!! Paul picks up two from the line only for Marc Gasol to respond with a rebound. Spain forced to foul and called for an unsportsmanlike. Kobe seals the victory with two free throws and the United States take the gold medal after a thrilling 118-107 victory. Dwayne Wade had 27 points and Kobe Bryant 20 for the Redeem Team but Spain were sensational with Fernandez and Gasol collecting 22 and 21 respectively.

    09:20 - The last final sees world champion Roberto Cammarelle of Italy meet China's Zhang Zhilei in the super-heavyweights.

    09:17 - Navarro can only make one from the line but Rubio hustles and it's white ball. Jimenez can't connect with his three point attempt and Kobe lays it up. Navarro misses the rainbow shot and it's 113-105 to the USA with 58 seconds left.

    09:15 - Spain won't lay down. Navarro with the basket and then Jimenez with three but Wade from outside the arc and it's 111-104 with two minutes to go.

    09:10 - Fernandez keeps Spain alive with a stunning play, and also draws the foul in the process. PaU Gasol is faultless from the line and then connects with a jumper to reduce the deficit to five. But Kobe is the go-to-guy as he gets three and Fernandez has fouled out with his side trailing 108-99 with three minutes left.

    09:07 - China win their second gold medal of the Beijing Olympics with Zhang Xiaoping outpointing Kenny Egan 11-7 in the Workers Gymmasium. But the Irishman will feel hard done by when he looks back at the tape as he seems to connect with several shots that did not gain points with the judging called into question once again.

    09:05 - Great athleticism from Kobe to gain the USA's first points of the quarter and then Williams connects with three from outside the arc. Howard slams two down but Fernandez hits three. 101-92 with six minutes left after Bryant connects with three.

    09:00 - Pau Gasol tips in an early rebound and then dunks home Fernandez's pass. Fernandez nails a three from the sideline and it's a two-point game with 8:13 left!!

    08:57 - Egan has work to do to win the light heavyweight gold medal as he trails Zhang Xiaoping 5-3 at the end of the second round.

    08:55 - Wade punishes Alex Mumbru's poor shot and that's a virtual four point play. Navarro puts two in, via the glass, but Williams hits the fadeaway. Gasol adds his sixth basket from the field but Anthony's three makes it a double figure advantage. However, Navarro connects at the buzzer and with a quarter to go, it's 91-82 USA.

    08:52 - Ireland's Kenny Egan is taking on China's Zhang Xiaoping in the final of the light-heavyweight class. Michael Carruth is the only Irish boxer ever to have won gold and Clondalkin's Egan is looking to make it two.

    08:50 - Anthony with the soft lay-up but then Jimenez picks up the garbage under the rim. LeBron with the tip; Marc Gasol responds; but the US go to James on the fast break. Kobe is punished for his fourth foul as David Beckham looks on. A 37-point drubbing in the pool game but it's closer than that now even though Bosh hits two from the line to make it 83-76 with 13 minutes left.

    08:40 - Howard misses both free throws but Anthony bullies his way in to get the touch and the foul. Howard is getting it done inside but a pair of rainbow shots from Navarro and the US call a time out with their lead a slender 75-71.

    08:37 - Felipe Reyes opens up the second-half with two and the US commit two early turnovers. The Redeem Team finally score on their fifth offensive possession as Dwight Howard grabs a key offensive rebound. Reyes, with a soft touch once more, and then Kobe is penalised for a travel. Marc Gasol with the left-handed hook and it's 71-67 at 07:30 in the third.

    08:35 - Kazakhstan retain the welterweight gold as Sarsekbayev scores 14 points in the middle two rounds on his way to a comfortable 18-9 victory. Banteaux's defeat mean Cuba leave Beijing without a single boxing gold to their name after losing four finals.

    08:30 - Serbia have defeated European champions Montenegro 6-4 in the clash of Balkan neighbours for the bronze medal. Dejan Savic scored two goals to help the Serbs open up a 6-1 lead.

    08:25 - Sarsekbeyev scores a flurry of points in the second round in order to lead their men's welterweight final 7-2 at the halfway stage.

    08:22 - The welterweight final is between Carlos Banteaux Suarez and Bakhyt Sarsekbayev of Kazakhstan. The Cuban leads 1-0 after the first round.

    08:20 - A back court violation from Williams and Spain move within seven via Fernandez from the line. His 13 points have kept Spain in this gold medal match as they go in at the half, trailing 69-61 with only 23 shots missed in an incredible offensive display. Wade leads all scorers with 21.

    08:15 - Wade and James for three but Fernandez, with a great pass to Felipe Reyes, and then with a floating shot keeps Spain hanging in there. Fernandez adds six points from downtown but Wade hits a three of his own and it is 63-54 to the USA with 1:56 left in the half.

    08:10 - Defending champions Croatia go home out of the medals after losing 35-29 to Spain in the bronze match. A 5-1 run midway through the second-half proves crucial with Juan Garcia and Carlos Prieto scoring seven apiece.

    08:05 - Rudy Fernandez with three and Rubio from the line but Kobe stops the run with virtually an alley-oop with his back to the basket. LeBron with the up, under, finger roll and Wade with the steal sees the US go 52-42 up with five minutes remaining in the half.

    08:00 - Kobe Bryant hits a three-pointer to make it a ten point lead early in the second. Pau Gasol misses two from the line, Rubio fails to connect with three from the side and Kobe goes to the other end for the dunk. A great rebound from Marc Gasol gives Spain a glimmer but Anthony buries the three to make it 46-33 US with 7:30 left in the half.

    07:57 - Tishchenko polishes off Sow 11-9 but the Frenchman is unhappy about the judging decisions, thinking he has levelled the scores just before the end.

    07:55 - Spain are not getting the rub of the decisions and the crowd are getting stuck into the refs. Bosh puts the tip in for two but Marc Gasol hits back only for Wade to add two from the line.     07:50 - Navarro goes four of five from the line but Paul is there with another three point play as he draws the foul. Chris Bosh adds two free throws to tie it at 22-22. Deron Williams adds two from the line and then a steal allows Wade to entertain the crowd with a behind the back dunk. Jorge Garbajosa nails three but Tayshaun Prince makes it 28-25 USA with two minutes left in Q1.

    07:45 - Anthony hits three from the side but Carlos Jimenez responds in kind and then Rubio takes on Jason Kidd to add two more. Dwayne Wade and Gasol exchange scores before a rainbow shot from Rubio makes it 19-14. He collects his second foul after rapid transition from the States and Chris Paul adds the free throw to the basket. 19-17 Spain halfway through the first quarter.

    07:40 - Alexey Tishchenko won the gold medal in the featherweight class in Athens and is chasing Russia's second boxing gold of the Games when he meets France's Daouda Sow in the final of the lightweight class.

    07:35 - LeBron James opens with a long three, Pau Gasol responds by throwing in the hook and drawing the foul from the Cavs star. 17-year-old Rubio feeds Gasol for the dunk and it's 5-4 Spain early.

    06:30 - Action is about to start in the Workers' Gymnasium with six finals. First up is China's Zou Shiming, who attempts to win his country's first Olympic gold medal in the light-flyweight class against Mongolian Serdamba Purevdorj.

    06:20 - The USA break open a tight third set by winning three points in a row for a 12-9 lead and that has now been extended to 16-12 prompting Brazil to call a time-out.

    04:45 - At the halfway stage of the group all-around final, China are in third behind Belarus and Russia. The hosts have been given a massive 17.575 from the judges after their work with the ropes, much to the delight of the crowd. The Italians have raised a protest though about their comparatively low score of 17.000.

  • Volleyball

    04:30 - Russia took men's bronze by beating Italy 25-22, 25-19, 25-23. A second straight Olympic bronze for Russia while Italy go home without a medal for the first Olympics since 1992. It's the final coming up!!
