Andrew Wheating

Wheating is going to London to run the 1,500 meters after making the trek to Beijing four years ago as a member of the U.S. 800 team. He's certainly proved his ability to run well at each distance, winning NCAA championships in both in 2010 - the first man to pull off that double since 1984 - in addition to a 2009 title in the 800 while at the University of Oregon. Wheating used his long legs to get to last year's outdoor world championships in the 1,500, and he earned his second Olympic berth with a third-place finish at the U.S. trials, edging out 2012 NCAA champion Andrew Bayer for the final spot. Wheating, who was only 20 when he made his Olympic debut in Beijing, is still relatively new to competitive running and probably hasn't yet reached his peak. He was primarily a soccer player in high school until he ran such a fast mile during his team's training that he was persuaded to switch to cross country and track during his junior year. That led to his rapid rise with the prestigious Oregon program.
