Leonel Suarez Biography

After winning a bronze medal in the decathlon four years ago in Beijing, Suarez will be looking to upgrade in 2012 - assuming he is cleared to compete. He missed the 2012 world indoor championships in March, and a Cuban newspaper reported that the reason was a problem with blood pressure, although he resumed training shortly thereafter. A healthy Suarez should be a force in London considering he's been among the world's most consistent decathletes in recent years. He backed up his 2008 result with a silver medal at the 2009 world championships and a bronze at the 2011 worlds, although Americans finished first at all three of those events. Suarez's top gold-medal moments have come at the 2011 Pan American Games and the 2009 Central American and Caribbean Championships in his native Cuba, where he set a personal best with 8,654 points. His strongest event tends to be the javelin, which he threw farther than any other decathlete in Beijing and at each of the last two world championships.
