Wales opened the defence of their Six Nations title with comfortable 26-13 victory over an out-classed Scotland at Murrayfield. More
80' White bounces out of a Wales tackle and Scots look for final way through. But knock on in midfield and ref blows for full-time. 26-13 Wales, a comfortable victory though they clearly took their foot off the pedal in the second half. England in Cardiff next up for the defending champions, while Scots travel to Paris. Thanks for joining us.
79' Powell under pressure at scrum and Scots win penalty. They spread ball wide and Evans puts through grubber which Byrne covers easily into touch. Last chance for Scots.
78' Southwell chips over and wicked bounce evades Byrne. But the full-back does just enough to stop Paterson from getting downward pressure. TMO says knock-on and Wales awarded 5m scrum.
75' Free-kick Scotland and home side test Wales defence. Evans again breaks first tackle and Scots continue to attack. Gray offloads again, this time to Southwell but Scots cannot find any way through Wales defence. But at least they are being patient and keeping possession.
75' Lovely offload by Gray puts Cusiter through. But Byrne just about halts the scrum-half, Scots forwards knock on and promising move comes to an end.
73' Jacobsen isolated and concedes penalty for holding on. Hook shanks kick and makes little ground. Wales win lineout but are turned over and Scots have chance to attack again. Game has gone dead!
71' Wales making plenty of errors now as Shane Williams is replaced by Bradley Davies - a second row! Andy Powell moves to centre - surely Scots will try to attack that position!
69' Paterson nails touchline converion to make it 26-13.
68' Scots have penalty in Wales 22 and Godman kicks right into corner. Scots win throw but Wales first line defence is good. Paterson wriggles clear and feeds Evans on the wing and the replacement gets outside Shane Williams and steps inside for super try. Well played. 26-11. Makes you wonder why he wasn't on from the start?
67' Not surprisingly the game has become loose and error-ridden after all the subs. Scots have a chance to break down the wing through Godman but Martyn Williams knocks on - deliberately according to ref Rolland and earns himself a yellow. Can Scots take advantage?
64' Scots force turnover and Cusiter tries to break clear. But Wales win ball back and spread ball down the left wing through Shane Williams.
61' Wales ring the changes: Charteris for Gough, Bishop for Roberts, Hook for Stephen Jones, Bennett for Rees and Yapp for Jenkins. Scots bring Hall on for Ford and Cusiter for Blair.
61' Scots try to run out of defence but Taylor fails to stay on his feet at a ruck and concedes penalty. Halfpenny steps up to take goal-kick but again fails to take the three points! Wales could have been 10-15 points better had they kicked their goals.
59' Peel on for Phillips at scrum-half for Wales.
58' Lovely offload in midfield from Jones to Roberts and the big centre cuts through Scots defence. Wales continue to attack, Martyn Williams sends miss pass out to wing but Scots defence holds firm. Ball eventually recycled and Shane Williams nips over for Wales' fourth try and his 45th. 26-6. Wales in total control here.
56' Scott Gray on for Barclay on Scots openside and he immediately concedes penalty.
55' Wales again putting together a series of attacks but they come to an end by holding on. Wales need to keep their discipline. There's a tendency for players to hold on to ball just a little too long.
51' Max Evans on for his second cap, replacing Cairns in the centres for Scotland.
50' Scots again spill ball and waste another attacking opportunity. But at least they're trying to take on the Welsh. Paterson offloads well to Taylor and Scots win penalty for Wales handling in ruck. Paterson again on target as he cuts Wales' lead to 21-6.
47' Byrne kicks out on the full and Scots have lineout on Wales' 22. They win ball but fail to make any inroads before Jacobsen knocks on wild Taylor pass. Scrum Wales.
46' Superb tap tackle by Jenkins on Southwell ends rare Scots attack after Jacobsen had gathered loose ball and attacked from his 22.
43' Wales in total control here. Williams produces another superb pass to almost put Wyn-Jones over for his second, but he is halted by a great tackle from Southwell.
41' Early signs are not good as Roberts bursts through midfield. The ball comes back to Williams, who cuts back in and appears to have ruined the chance before flipping ball to Halpenny, who goes over in corner. Ref goes to TMO who awards the try. Great start for Wales who extend lead to 21-3. Scots are staring at a huge defeat here!
41' Jones gets second half underway. Can Scots find anything to halt Wales' dominance?
40' Scots have hands in ruck and ref awards Wales penalty. Jones on target to extend Wales' lead to 16-3 as ref blows for half-time. Only one side in it at the moment and one gets the feeling that Wales are not having to push themselves too hard for their lead! Yellow card certainly hurt them.
39' Great scrum from Wales as they forced turnover and Powell runs out of defence before Jones kicks up field. Great scrum ends Scots best attacking position and Wales now have luneout near Scots 22!
38' Much better from the Scots as their forwards force Wales into desperate defence. Paterson is almost free but great tackle from Powell. Barclay is a metre short. Ref blows for scrum.
35' Huge kick from Southwell finds touch on Wales' 22. Can they nick Wales throw and get something from this position? Yes they can but the ball is slow when it is taken up in midfield. But Scots retain possession and continue their attack, earning a scrum when the ball fails to come out.
31' Roberts dummies to kick but instead launches counter from deep inside his 22. Wales almost burst clear but big tackle by Hogg and Morrison force Wales to concede penalty and Scots have chance to get on scoreboard through Paterson's boot. Nice kick from the ever-reliable Paterson. 13-3 Wales.
29' Wales destroy Scots scrum, Williams feeds Jones who brings ball up to within a yard of Scots line. Alun Wyn-Jones first at hand and bursts overs for Wales' second try. 13-0 Wales. Scotland in danger of being taken to the cleaners here! Why was Hogg not packing down when Scots were a man short?
27' Wales pressure Scots scrum - a man short - and win penalty which Jones kicks into Scots 22. Another good position for the Welsh and Scots under increasing pressure here.
27' White is off to make way for Dickinson at scrum.
24' Wales offside and Godman kicks Scotland down to opposition 22. Rare attacking position for the Scots, who win their throw and try to set up attack through Hogg. But he's isolated and Rees forces penalty.
22' Phillips offloads to Powell and sets up attack in Scots 22. Williams bursts clear on the outside, feeds Byrne inside who in turn feeds Shanklin who goes over for the opening try. Lovely score. Wales 8-0.
20' Dickinson will come on for Cross, but in 10 minutes time after the sin bin has been served. Wales kick penalty for lineout just outside Scots' 22.
20' Cross is still down but he is at least sitting up, which is a relief. He took the full brunt of Byrne's knee in what, it has to be said, was a daft tackle. Sad moment for the debutant.
20' Webster is also in difficulty, throwing up on the pitch. Ref Rolland has ordered him off and Paterson is warming up.
20' High ball by Blair and Cross takes out Byrne in mid-air. The debutatnt prop has injured himself in the tackle - again he looks knocked out - and can expect a yellow when he comes round. Fantastic take by Byrne - as usual. Stretcher is out and Cross is about to be taken off. Scots will be without a man for 10 minutes.
19' Good hands by Scotland as they spread it wide and test the Wales defence. But Southwell miss pass goes over the head of his runners and directly into touch. Scots should play with a bit more patience and set up another play when there's nothing on.
16' Scots pinch lineout. Shanklin is down and Wales are short of a defender. But Adam Jones forces turnover, Jones kicks upfield and Wales get scrum down after forward pass.
15' Webster claims drop out and sets up attack. Southwell breaks defensive line, the ball is recycled and Scots continue to attack in Wales' 22. Cairns runs good line but forced into touch. Better by Scots.
14' Lamont knocks on and Wales launch another series of attacks into Scots half. But the ball goes loose and Hamilton and Cross take play back into Wales' half. Godamn tries a chip over defence but it's long and Wales touch down easily.
12' Big scrum by Wales and they turn Scots over and earn a penalty which Stephen Jones kicks comfortably. 3-0 Wales.
10' Wales are looking extremely dangerous as they spread ball wide. They have men over and it takes a massive hit by Webster on Williams to halt the move. Brave effort by the wing but he failed to get the right body position and has knocked himself out. But he's back on his feet thankfully and looks to be fine.
10' Scots try to pick and drive but the Wales defence is solid. Ball is spilled and Roberts hacks through for lineout in Scotland half.
- Byrne, who's involved in everything at the moment, penalised for holding on and Godman clears up to halfway.
7' Box kick from Blair off Scotland scrum in their 22 and Scots claim ball and kick further down field. But Byrne counters and beats several defenders as he sets up another Wales attack. All Wales at the moment.
5' Wales keeping possession well and looking good as they spread it wide through Williams and Byrne. But the defence is good and Wales attack forced into touch. Byrne takes a knock as his head hits the ground in the tackle, but he's up and looks to be ok.
4' Wales get first possession and Shanklin bumps Cairns and makes good yards, but the ball is spilled by Gough and move comes to an end.
3' Southwell puts up another high ball and Scots claim the loose ball. Ball comes back to Southwell and he makes a half break before the ball is spilled forward.
1' Early knock on by Wales off a high ball and Scotland have the first scrum feed.
1' Godman kicks off to a huge roar at Murrayfield.
- Two fine national anthems set the tone for what promises to be a cracking encounter. Wales start as favourites but I have a feeling we could be in for an upset this afternoon. Both sides are missing two key players each but Wales could miss theirs the most. We'll wait and see.
- The Wales fans are making themselves heard with a rendition of Hymns and Arias - not doubt we'll be treated to more of the same later this afternoon.
- One interesting sub-plot of this afternoon's clash is the battle between scrum-halfs Mike Blair and Mike Phillips, rivals for the British and Irish Lions jersey in South Africa this summer.
- Encounters between these two sides have traditionally been high-scoring and exciting, with plenty of running rugby. No reason why we cannot expect the same today as the teams take the field.
- Scotland are also missing Lions hopeful Nathan Hines from their second row, while their all-time leading points' scorer Chris Paterson has surprisingly been left on the bench. The versatile Paterson will provide cover for fly-half Phil Godman, wings Lamont and Simon Webster, and full-back Southwell.
- Hugo Southwell, Graeme Morrison, Sean Lamont, Jason White and Allister Hogg - who have 207 caps between them - all return to Hadden's starting XV.
- Scotland coach Frank Hadden has awarded a debut cap for prop Geoff Cross in a side showing six changes from the one that started Scotland's last match, the 41-0 victory over Canada. Cross comes in for injured tight-head Euan Murray, and the 29-year-old doctor forms a front row with Allan Jacobsen and hooker Ross Ford.
- Ireland threw down the gauntlet to Warren Gatland's side with their thrilling victory over France in Paris yesterday and Wales will want to justify their pre-tournament favourites tag with an impressive performance against the much-improved Scots.
- Mike Phillips starts at scrum-half with Dwayne Peel promoted to the bench after Gareth Cooper was ruled out with injury. Stephen Jones starts at 10 ahead of James Hook, who is likely to see some action off the bench.
- Henson misses his seventh successive Test match and could be a huge loss for his side as they have never lost a Six Nations game in which he has started.
- It is the second high-profile withdrawal for Wales in the space of two days, with star centre Henson also pulling out with a calf problem. Gatland has recalled Tom Shanklin at 13, with Jamie Roberts moving to inside centre.
- Blindside Jones has a calf problem and is replaced in the side by Dafydd Jones, with veteran openside Martyn Williams taking over as skipper. The absence of Jones is a real blow for the Welsh, not only in terms of what he offers on the field but also in terms of his leadership.
- Good afternoon and welcome to the second instalment of Six Nations rugby this weekend as defending champions Wales launch their campaign against Scotland at Murrayfield, minus skipper Ryan Jones and Gavin Henson.| Scotland | versus | Wales |
