  • Live Commentary

    Time:80'
    • South Africa
    • British and Irish Lions
    • FT The ball comes loose and Jones kicks clear. The Lions have the win - the series belongs to South Africa but the Lions have shown an awful lot during this tour and have got a win that few would begrudge them.
    • 80' The hooter has gone but SA do have the ball.
    • 79' The Lions just hanging onto the ball waiting for the clock to tick away.
    • 79' Bowe now breaks clear of halfway as the Lions look to finish the match in style.
    • 76' Replay after replay is shown and it is still not conclusive - such a close decision - the VIDEO REFEREE SAYS NO TRY! Foot was just in touch - that could have gone either way.
    • 76' And they finally look the get in the right corner - Ndungane with a great finish, he just keeps his foot in and grounds it - or does he? The video ref is taking a long look.
    • 75' SA pressing in these final moments they win a penalty in the 22 and will go again for touch and the try.
    • 73' (9-28) SA petulantly give away yet another penalty and Jones slots it over again - this is turning into a bit a rout and the Lions actually lead the aggregate score in this series.
    • 72' (9-25) Jones takes full advantage by kicking in between the posts and the match looks over now.
    • 71' Handbags involving a number of players after a little altercation between Brussouw and Mike Phillips. Brussouw is considered the trouble maker and the Lions have a penalty right in front of the posts. Looks a harsh decision though - Brussouw just pushed Phillips out of the mix.
    • 70'[ Nice spell of pressure from the Lions after a great grab from O'Connell off a line-out.
    • 68' (9-22) Not a gimme for Morne Steyn 15 metres in from the left but he does put it over to close the gap. Time running out for the hosts though.
    • 67' Brussouw slams at Martyn Williams as the Welshman hangs onto the ball after conceding a penalty. This time SA are going to go for three.
    • 65' SA have been refusing penalties so why, oh, why does Steyn try a drop goal from 60 meters out? Decent attempt but not good enough and the Lions will be happy to watch him do that all day.
    • 63' SA keep ball in hand from inside their own 22 all the way into the Lions half - Stephen Jones gives a peanlty just to end the drive. Spies has come on for SA and will play on the wing in place of Nokwe.
    • 61' The Lions win a penalty just inside their own half. Jones says he doesn't have the boot for it but Kearney has a go. He gets the length but it goes wide.
    • 60' "Swing Low Sweet Chariots" coming from the Lions fans - SA not really looking too dangerous at the moment - the Lions have been ferocious throughout.
    • 58' Great kick from replacement Francois Steyn puts the ball just outside the Lions 22 - but Ford and O'Connell work well off the line-out and clear.
    • 56' A hosts of changes coming in - the Lions have Mike Phillips playing centre at the moment after Harry Ellis came on for Flutey. John Hayes also on for the redeemed Phil Vickery.
    • 55' (6-22) TRY LIONS - Superb steal from Monye as he nicks a pass from Olivier to Kirchner on his own 22 and then explodes all the way under the posts. Jones converts too and surely the Lions have this in the bag now.
    • 54' SA win the line-out but are immediately pushed back with Martyn Williams playing a key role.
    • 53' The Lions give away a penalty in the corner though and SA kick to touch - they will have a line-out right on the line.
    • 52' Replacement Pienaar explodes off a line-out allowing SA to press - they then move the ball from left to right but Bowe makes a key tackle on Kirchner in the corner and the ball is knocked on.
    • 50' Lions giving a few too many penalties away with hands in the ruck the latest offence. At least the penalties are ending their attacks though as opposed to handing scoring chances to the hosts.
    • 48' Lions line out just ouside the 22 after an awful kick from Kirchner goes out on the full but AGAIN - not releasing - and South Africa can clear with a penalty.
    • 47' Great stuff from O'Connell as he forces South Africa to hang onto the ball and wins a penalty.
    • 46' Ndungane has space to storm forward but great tackle from Monye ends the attack.
    • 45' Ohhh but the chance goes as Sheridan is charged with holding on right near the line. Great defence from SA though.
    • 44' Heaslip finds Bowe and for a moment is looks like the Irishman is through but he is tripped close to the line. Jones moves forward a bit more now - the Lions really pressing.
    • 43' The 14 men not just coping - they are attacking in the early stages of the half.
    • 41' And we are back underway - Bismarck Du Plessis has come on for SA. Remember Shaw in the bin for another six mintues or so.
    • HT And that is the last action of the half. The Lions lead 15-6 but they should not have conceded that late penalty and there was also the conversion that dropped off the tee. It could easily be 17-3.
    • 40' (6-15) And now the Lions give away a penalty down the left. Steyn slices the post too so SA are handed a free three points just before the break.
    • 40' With time up Kearney cannot find touch with the kick - silly stuff. South Africa have another chance.
    • 40' Great tackle by Flutey on Olivier - he then turns him over too and wins a penalty.
    • 39' SA win a penalty and Smit taps and drives again, another penalty awarded for offside. They kick right into the corner instead of going for three. A real chance with Shaw off the pitch.
    • 38' Heaslip looks to have turned the ball over just on the 22 line but then the referee awards a SA put in. SA pressing in these final moments of the half.
    • 37' Yellow card for Simon Shaw for contact with the knees - the referee didn't see it but the line judge did. The Lions will be down to 14 for 10 minutes.
    • 37' First Scot to make a Test appearance this tour. Ross Ford has come on for a groggy looking Matthew Rees.
    • 36' Bowe now nearly gathers a kick through but the ball bounces behind him. No knock on though as the ball went backwards and the Lions can continue to press.
    • 35' Bowe now nearly gathers a kick through but the ball bounces behind him. No knock on though as the ball went backwards and the Lions can continue to press.
    • 33' (3-15) No drama this time as Jones converts the try.
    • 32' (3-13) TRY LIONS - The Lions turn the ball over in their own half and move it right to left at great pace. Riki Flutey kicks a ball over the top and chases it himself - it bounces back to him and he just flicks it back to Williams who can romp under the posts for his second try.
    • 30' Great quick passing from Bowe and Kearney and Williams - it started and ended with the Welshman but he then tries a kick into the centre but there is no red shirt there.
    • 29' More good work from the Lions front row. SA not binding and Lions win a penalty in their own 22 and clear the danger.
    • 27' Ndungane storms down the right and looks to scoop a pass back into play from inside the 22 but Heaslip does enough to gather the ball.
    • 26' (3-8)DISASTER FOR THE LIONS FROM THE CONVERSION - Right in front of the post Jones sees the ball drop off the tee on his run-up so no two points. To be fair looking at the try there might have been a block from Simon Shaw so perhaps they should be happy with the five.
    • 25' TRY FOR THE LIONS! Jamie Heaslip bulldozes himself through a few men - SA think they have him but he gets back up and continues the run and then he feeds Shane Williams who can run under the posts.
    • 24' Fine defence from the Lions in the end though. Olivier had found a couple of gaps and Ndungane nearly got in before Matthew Rees made a final tackle. The Lions then turned the ball over and Phillps cleared with a fine kick.
    • 23' SA find a couple of gaps and are now deep in the Lions 22.
    • 22' Clever little kick from Steyn catches out Kearney for once as he cannot deal with the bouncing ball - South Africa scrum in Lions territory.
    • 21' Bowe blokes a kick from Steyn with his boot but cannot gather as it flies into touch.
    • 20' Ndungane just rips the balls out of Joe Worsley's hands ending another Lions attack.
    • 19' Vickery is really standing up well to the Beast in the scrum. Mtawarira is lucky to escape a penalty for bringing down a scrum.
    • 18' Nokwe is quick as you like on the South Africa wing but he needs to gather the ball first! He has just knocked on after being fed down the left.
    • 17' Lions not making the most of the ball they are getting in central positions. Phillips the latest to be penalised for hanging on but to be fair Brussouw had wrapped him up good and proper.
    • 16' Monye with a good clearance under pressure from Olivier after a terrible drop goal attempt from Steyn dropped short leading to a tricky situation.
    • 15' Booming clearance though from Steyn - the Lions wanted a penalty for a SA man coming in from the side.
    • 14' Matfield drops a ball though and the Lions now can attack the other way with ball in hand.
    • 13' Du Preez taps a penalty to himself after an offside deep in his own half and drives straight to halfway.
    • 12' (3-3) Shane Williams with that poor kick and then Jamie Heaslip hangs onto his man too long on the ground. Morne Steyn pops over an easy penalty and quick as you like we are level.
    • 10' Poor kick from Williams sees South Africa have a line-out just outside the 22 - they claim the ball cleanly too and can attack now.
    • 9' (0-3) Lions pressure the South African scrum and force them up which leads to a penalty and Stephen Jones makes no mistake this time! The Lions take an early lead.
    • 8' Some good passing from the Lions but just as they get close to the 22 Tommy Bowe knocks on. Very open and frantic start to this match and Kearney looking superb again.
    • 7' Another super run from Kearney sees him go from deep in his own half into the South African half - another chance for the Lions to attack.
    • 6' But the ball is then turned over and Kirchner with a hefty boot clears to halfway although not to touch.
    • 5' Kearney kicks another penalty into touch inside the 22 - big line-out coming up here.
    • 4' South Africa now give away a penalty just past half way a little to the right. Jones tries for the posts but it goes just wide - first chance gone.
    • 3' Martyn Williams has looked great with ball in hand a couple of times already - a break from him and then Rob Kearney sees the Lions pass half-way.
    • 2' Kirchner kicks deep into the Lions 22 but Monye is able to deal with it - very open start to this match.
    • 1' South Africa kick off and immediately press the Lions back but give away a penalty which allows Stephen Jones to clear.
    • - Both teams have now made their way out we will be getting underway really soon.
    • - Meanwhile, the Springboks have made plenty of changes too... 10 to be exact.
    • - Seven changes for the Lions this week due in the main to injuries. Read about them all here
    • - Also a big swansong in a Lions jersey for Phil Vickery who will lock horns again with Tendai 'The Beast' Mtawarira, the Springboks loose-head who gave him such a mauling in the Lions' first Test defeat. Vickery up for final Test
    • - One man tipping the Lions to finally get a win today is Eurosport blogger and former Lion Neil Back. Read his thoughts here
    • - Welcome to Ellis Park for this third and final Test between South Africa and the Lions. With the hosts 2-0 up it is a "dead rubber" in some ways but both teams will be desperate to end the series with a win.

  2. Can both side enjoy the series, there are to many people tht have to spoil the game by slagging each other off. Grow up and try to chill out. I bet you are the sort of people that moan whoever you play, if thats the case you need to sort youself out.
Well done the Lions on the brillient win, great play with class and speed. The whole series has been great fun to watch, and i look forward to the next one.
Well done SA with the 2-1 win.

  3. Some discussion here of the Welsh contribution. It was the BRITISH Lions. Croft scored 2 tries. Made by O'Driscoll. Kearney scored. Flutey and Heaslip made Williams'. Jones missed some kicks. All the Lions played well today. Good to see Vickery and Monye reverse their Ist test errors. Some question marks over selection at times. Why omit them from the 22 for the second test. Why wasn't Hook on the bench then? Why didn't they bring him on in the final minute of the 3rd test? He was the only sub who didn't get on in the tournament overall. Why bring on Ellis? Earls was the only member of the original squad who didn't figure in any 22 match day squad. Why was Croft dropped?

As a 'brand' the Lions have some issues. 3 problems - Once again they were unlucky. Their captain died in a boating accident in the very first tourand they seem to have been dogged by bad luck ever since!. In the era of professionalism it is a bit like sending out the Barbarians against a settled team. And to their credit they were the more adventurous team by far - some times too much so. Thirdly they are on a hiding to nothing - they can't restore their pride for another 4 years. Hines will never represent them again. Burger and Botha will be back in harness against NZ and the Aussies in a week or 2. The Lions can't do that. Another squas will be assembled in 4 year's time with high hopes. Mind you with Shaw's contribution any of the 2009 vintage might still be in the frame!

  4. Pretty pathetic comments, both for the Lions and the Boks, both sides played some superb rugby during the series and some was below the belt, but show me a side today that doesn't cheat(Including England). The result was a fair reflection of the great series, but the commentaries from so called rugby writers was appalingly poor. I wonder how many really have played this game? I am sorry that Schalk cost the Boks 13 points and should have been red carded, but so should others as well ( including some of the lions). But in all a wonderful spectacle of modern rugby, full of drama and guts.
Well done to all of you, Lions and Boks.

  5. Well done to the Lions today. Well done to SA for winning the test series. Both teams can be proud of there efforts over the 3 games and today's match was a highlight, in that what was said off-field during the week didn't turn the match into a dirty affair. Let's hope they can all have a dinner in one of V Matfield's restaurants tonight and drink a few beers together.

Well done the Lions, ye did us proud out there!

  7. OH YES!!!! ONE MORE THING!!! THANK YOU SCHALK BURGER(AND OTHER RUGGER THUGGER BUGGERS)...YOU IDIOTS!!!!!! FOR ALMOST RUINING LUKE FITZGERALDS EYESIGHT, NEGATING THE BOK SERIES WIN,BRINGING THE GAME INTO SUCH DISRIPUTE,BEING A BAD SPORTSPERSON AND COMPROMISING YOUR OWN AS WELL AS THE TEAMS TRI-NATIONS HOPE.
NO WONDER PEOPLE ARE WISHING SA THE WORST.
MAYBE IT IS TIME THE IRB SEVERELY ENFORECED ITS OWN RULES

  8. Some of the comments do not reflect what the sport of rugby is all about.
So the BOKS played a bit rough.Since when the English are sportsmanhsip exemplars.
Come on drop the mean spirited @#$%.

  9. fair enough JohnB.I can understand the Thug issues and disapoinment and the wan***ism for wearing the armbands. As long as we are objective about the truth.
If the Lions didnt suffer a few crucial injuries before the tour began that might have also made a difference.Never mind ref,eye gouging etc.
I have to admit, series win or no series win.The Lions by far played the best rugby and ran in the best tries.I expected a bit more from the Bok 3/4
As a bok fan I would rather loose the series than win in disgrace. My Points were just about people forgeting issues in general.
So Hopefully not all SA supporters are bad loosers and nasty.
All the best to you all for the six nations.......

  10. Finally, a decent performance by the referee and look what happened. Congrats to Phil Vickery who learned a lot and came back stronger. A seamless change for Phillips from scrum half to centre. Quick ball from a solid scrum and loose gave the Boks little time to get organised. SA looked very ordinary in all departments. Even their attempts at illegal scrummaging were poor! But what a great Tour. Just the thing to wipe out the memory of Woodwards embarrassing circus in NZ.

  12. pfi100: World cup a different time and place. SA thrashed England and fairly, I have never said any different. We are discussing what's happened in your back yard today and over the last two tests. SA were taught a lesson today. You saw your team disintegrate under lions pressure. Your forwards made to look second rate and your backs couldn't string it together because of the immense defence by the scratch Lions backs. SA ended up not being a team but a bunch of individuals on the pitch, each man trying to win the game by himself (a 65 yard drop goal attempt when you are 20 odd points down says it all!).

Its always nice to get the last word.

  13. Don key, you're a w a n k stain......a real sad @#$%, I'm laughing at you because you are really wound up about this....you miss the point of this great game.....that it's about friendship, camaraderie, grace and modesty, something which you know nothing about......if the SA players heard what you were saying they give you a slap and disown you. I think SA are a great Rugby Nation but you represent everything which is disgusting about it.......have a few beers matey and mellow out.

Boks beaten by Lions B team because they could not cheat or take players out.

Just think of the hammering the Lions A team would have given them if the BOKs had played fair like today:

Ive been to SA and its sad that every house as to have bob wire around it and you have to carry a gun as self sefence. You even have to show your receipt when leaving a shoping mall tothe armed guards to prove you aint nicked it. Its pretty bad when the top prize on a radio station compition is to have your houses security re vamped. Your country is heading like Zimbabwe my friend. ha ha ha

Willie John had the right idea with the 99 call --- its the only language the Boks understand:

Just watch the BOKs totally F**k up the footie World Cup: Imagine a whole nation without any sense of sportsmanship: Don't let them play internationals in the future:
