Geech perfect for Quins

Wed Oct 21 01:18PM

I had the pleasure of attending a dinner in honour of Ian McGeechan earlier this week and it struck me that the great man is the ideal candidate to take over at Quins.

Geech played for Headingley during his club career and it is a mark of his standing in the game that the organisers had to quickly schedule another dinner because the first one was sold out.

More than 600 people turned out to help celebrate his new autobiography, which is an indication of what a fantastic people person Geech is, and who better to pull Quins together after a difficult start to the Premiership and Heineken Cup?

Quins proved last season that they have a very good squad of players, but they seem to have lost direction and confidence this term - which is no surprise when you consider what the club went through over the summer.

I can think of no better coach to solve the problem at Quins than Geech. He's shown what he can achieve at club level with Northampton and then Wasps, and at international level with Scotland and the Lions.

Quins are clearly a top club and I think Geech could help them realise their true potential. They have a great stadium, which they own, a very good infrastructure and management, and a decent fan base.

The club's location is also an advantage when it comes to attracting players - London is always a draw.

Furthermore, the perception of Quins has changed in the modern era. No longer are they thought of as the 'old school' club, but a highly professional outfit with financial clout.

There is no doubt in my mind that under Dean Richards Harlequins were on course to becoming a great club, a real force in British rugby - second in the Premiership and quarter-finalists in the Heineken Cup last season is evidence of that.

If anyone can continue what Deano started then it is Geech. There is nobody better at bringing a squad together and I think that is what Quins need right now.

  2. Quins hav got a very talented squad. a full strength fit team that includes ;Easter, Care, Monye, Brown, Turner-Hall ,Tiesi, Skinner, Robshaw, Percival, Evans, can reach watever heights they put their minds to. the scandal of the summer should be left behind now, justice may or may not have been done, but regardless, its over, move on.
id like to see quins do well, simply because i believe the likes of Easter and Monye can challenge the best in the world in their positions. their talented guys, who shouldnt be tarred with the mark of cain forever for someone elses sins.
not that im a quins supporter, or even an england supporter, i just like to see good rugby, and see good rugby players get rewarded. mcgeechan cud write a new chapter with them
