Master place-kicker Chris Paterson put over four penalties as Scotland upset England 15-9 in a poor Six Nations match on Saturday, relegating Jonny Wilkinson's new world points record of 1099 to second place. More
80' There it is. Scots have won 15-9. A shocking game and shocking performance from England. Scotland deserve their win. They were limited in their game plan but at least they were efficient at it. It's been an appaling week for Ashton and I for one think his position is now under serious threat. Who is Shaun Edwards coaching these days. Oh yeh, Wales who have won four from four. Thanks for joining us.
76' England at least retaining some possession now. But I write too soon as they lose possession and then concede penalty for not releasing. Parks kicks for the corner.
73' Noon tries to burst through midfield but is dispossesed. England get ball back but White puts in superb tackle on Sackey and earns scrum for Scots.
72' Brown on for Hogg in Scots back row.
70' Hodgson on for Wilkinson (at last), Stevens for Vickery.
66' Vickery is turned and Scots pinch ball. England then concede another penalty. Kay comes on for Shaw, Chuter for Mears, Tait for Flood.
63' MacLeod off for White in the second row.
57' Not an easy match to report on this one as it really is a shocker. Kick, followed by kick. At least the Scots can claim to be kicking much better! Wilkinson should be off and Hodgson on immediately!
52' Scots go over the top and Wilkinson has another chance on goal. Nice kick. 15-9 Scotland.
49' Sheridan strips Taylor of ball. Scots called for offside and Wilkinson can now cut their lead. The fly-half is on target. 15-6 Scotland.
47' Balshaw caught in possession and England concede another penalty. Southwell ran into Noon seconds earlier after chipping ahead but correctly ref did not award penalty. But then Balshaw gives away a penalty and Parks nails a beauty. 15-3. England are falling apart!
46' England concede another penalty for three players coming in from the side. Not one, not two but three! Ashton needs to do something about this and soon otherwise England are destined for an appaling defeat!!
45' Another shocking kick by England and Paterson gathers and kicks into England's half. Easter does well to break clear but Shaw spills his pass and Scots get scrum for knock on.
41' England immediately concede penalty through Sheridan and Paterson makes it 12-3. What a shocking start by England!
41' The rain has abated as Parks gets the second half underway. What can England do and can Wilkinson give their game some driection?
40' Scots win penalty and Paterson has another chance to extend their lead from about 40m, just left of the posts. He scuffs it but somehow it goes over as the ref blows for half-time. 9-3 Scotland!
38' England run the ball out of defense. Sackey is tackled but Hogg comes in from the side and England awarded penalty. Another chance for Wilkinson but it's at the limit of his range and he comes up just short!
35' parks scuffs kick but it works ok for Scots. Sackey clears up and Flood kicks back into Scots half. Balshaw takes mark and hoofs down field. Scots return and Wilkinson does same. Boring period of ping pong. Someone tell me when it's over!!
32' Wilkinson goes down after late challenge but ref penalises him for a dive!
30' Sheridan comes through ruck and concedes penalty. Daft from the giant prop as England were comfortable in defense! Paterson on target to give Scots 6-3 lead.
25' Scrum down to England 10m from Scots line and England given penalty for Scots not taking the bind. Wilkinson slots penalty, makes it 3-3 and becomes the all-time leading points scorer in international rugby.
25' Hooker Ford is also off and Thomson is on.
23' England win throw and again forwards batter Scots line. But defense is good and Wigglesworth is bundled into touch. Little victory for Scotland!
22' Parks is on for Lamont. He goes to fly-half and Paterson to the wing.
21' Wilkinson kicks for touch 5m from Scots line. England win throw and launch drive. Scots hold them up just short but concede penalty for coming in from the side. Wilkinson again kicks for touch.
21' Lamont is out cold and is being stretchered off and Balshaw is also limping.
20' Nice kick from Blair and Vainikolo knocks on. Scotland spin the ball wide but lose it and Balshaw kicks ahead and pressures Lamont. The Scotland full-back loses out and Croft is almost clear. Scots penalised and England have chance to level scores.
18' Vainikolo almost clear on the right but he overuns the pass and knocks on. First real chance for England.
14' England looking to stretch their play but Lamont steals the ball, only for Scotland to concede turnover. Walker penalised for not releasing and Wilkinson kicks for touch on Scots 22m line. First attacking chance for England.
10' England concede another penalty just after restart and Paterson kicks Scots back into their half. England must get their discipline right!
8' England penalised again! That's three in the space of two minutes and ref warns Vickery. Chance for Paterson who makes it 27 from the last 27 kicks on goal. 3-0 Scotland. What an astonishing record from Paterson!
7' Sheridan penalised for coming in the side and Scots kick for touch on England's 10m line. Borthwick penalised for going through the line and Paterson this time kicks into England 22. First real chance of the game.
6' Balshaw gathers a difficult bouncing ball in his 22 and finds a good touch. Could be his day!
2' Scots win penalty and takes quick tap. Paterson puts up hight ball and Balshaw takes it well. Real nerve calmer for the full-back!
1' Wilkinson gets the game underway. The team that deals best with the conditions will clearly get the upper hand.
- Ashton has also retained the highly-promising Tom Croft at blindside flanker since James Haskell has not recovered from the injury he suffered in the win over France. Englands forwards were very impressive in Paris and on paper they should create a decent platform for their exciting backs to show what they can do.
- Cipriani-gate has dominated the build up to this game and his young tyro Danny Cipriani has been dropped from the squad altogether for breaking a curfew earlier in the week. Cipriani was due to replace the defensively fragile Iain Balshaw at full-back but the Gloucester flyer is recalled and will need to show far greater composure under the high ball than he has done to date in the championship.
- Scotland coach Frank Hadden is under extreme pressure to turn his sides championship around and a win today could go a long way to doing that. Hadden has brought in Graeme Morrison at inside centre and retained Chris Paterson at fly-half with a view to getting the Scots back-line moving for the first time.
- Welcome to the second Six Nations clash of the day between Scotland and England from Murrayfield in Edinburgh. Scotland are winless so far and have scored only one try in their three defeats so England go into the game as strong favourites. But the Calcutta Cup has a habit of throwing up surprises and England will take them lightly at their own peril.| Scotland | versus | England |
