New Zealand claimed their ninth Tri-Nations title and their fourth in a row when they beat Australia 28-24 in a thrilling deciding match. More
79' Blacks have possession and are counting down the clock with pick and drives. But they kick it on and Wallabies have one last chance. Giteau finds Tuqiri out wide. The ball is recycled, goes wide again to Hynes and Blacks concede penalt. Three points not enough so Wallabies run it. Blacks counter ruck, Weepu kicks for touch and ref blows final whistle. New Zealand are Tri-Nations champions and retain the Bledisloe Cup. Great second half!! Thanks for joining us.
77' Giteau makes it 28-24 and Blacks face nervous few minutes to see this game out.
77' Good scrum from the Wallabies and they earn put in. Need a try here and Giteau drifts wide before feeding Cross on the switch and the wing somehow crashes through number of Blacks tackles for well-taken try. Ref foes to video official but looks pretty good to me. Try given. 28-22.
70' McMeniman on for Elson.
66' Conversion from Carter makes it 28-17. New Zealand in control here and will likely try and shut up shop now to secure victory.
65' Mealamu tries quick throw to Afoa at front of lineout and the prop goes close but ref calls them back for throw not five. Blacks on the front foot again and Carter weaves his way through for another try! Magic from the fly-half. 26-17.
63' Lovely conversion from Carter. 21-17.
62' So'oialo breaks tackle and makes lovely break. The ball is recycled, Sivivatu goes close and pops it up to Weepu for Blacks third try. 19-17.
59' Lovely attack from Blacks as Carter feeds inside to Smith, but his pass to Thorn is spilled forward and Hynes kicks down field.
55' Weepu on for Cowan.
53' Aussies on front foot again but some strong defence is keeping them out. Smith drives, Elsom makes good ground, Wallabies try pick and drive a metere from Blacks line. Cordingly dummies and goes for the line but concedes free kick for holding on. Big moment there. Aussies went through 14 phases but failed to score!
51' Mealamu is on for Hore.
51' Carter kicks conversion and it's anyone's game again at 17-14.
50' And the All Blacks are right back in it. Long pass from Cowan makes room for Smith, who makes good ground with a class dummy before finding Tony Woodcock on the left wing. The prop had quite a bit to do but shows good pace to go over in corner. Lovely try. 17-12.
48' Hynes cuts Carter in half with an absolute pearler of a tackle. Ouch!
44' How can the All Blacks respond? Wallabies have taken control of this game at crucial time - a try just before the break and a try just after. And what a cracker for their second. Lock Horwill is making a habit of scoring.
44' Giteau curls it in again and Wallabies lead 17-7!
43' McCaw penalised for playing man off his feet. Looks a tad harsh as Giteau kicks Aussies to All Blacks 22 for lineout. They win their throw and launch a series of wide attacks. Giteau makes first break, ball comes back and after good passsing Horwill goes over in the right corner for another superb try! 15-7.
41' Carter gets second half started and quick turnover by All Blacks. Big tackle by Mortlock on Nonu and Wallabies get scrum down for knock on.
39' Giteau curls ball nicely through posts for conversion to make it 10-7.
39' Nice break by Sharpe sets up quick ball for Cross. Ball is recycled and Giteau sends over cross kick which Hynes takes beautifully and feeds inside to Ashley-Cooper who steps inside two tackles to go over for superb try. This is more like it! 8-7 Australia.
38' All Blacks enjoying a period of pressure now, but the game is not capturing the imagination at all. Just a series of stop-start attacks, little structure and endless free kicks. Not the players' fault, more those numpties at the IRB who agreed the ELVs.
27' Good burst from Cross and then Smith, and then Cross again as Wallabies attack in Blacks 22. Sharpe continues the attack and after series of mini-rucks the ball goes wide to Ashley Cooper but defence is good. Kaino puts in huge hit and All Blacks clear the danger.
25' Lovely take and then break from Mulaina but his chip ahead goes straight into touch. Unlucky. Kahui then makes another break from kick ahead but Aussies win penalty from next ruck for All Blacks coming in from side. There have been one or two nice moments in the game but it has NO structure. ELVs not working as far as this fan is concerned!
21' Aussies pinch the scrum and McCaw then penalised for offside at ruck. Giteau slots simple penalty and cuts score to 7-3.
20' High kick from Giteau is superbly taken by Muliaina and a period of aerial ping pong ensues. Tuqiri brings it to an end with good burst and Giteau breaks to the left, with support outside. Palu looks to straighten but spills ball forward. Better from the Wallabies.
17' Offside All Blacks but Giteau makes a huge mess of the kick for touch and kicks it long! Scrum back near halfway for the All Blacks.
14' Carter on target and it's 7-0 All Blacks.
13' Another free kick for All Blacks, Cowan takes quick tap, the ball goes quickly through hands and Muliaina is put clear on the right. Poor defence by Wallabies and well taken by Kiwis for a 5-0 lead.
12' Good pressure by Blacks but huge double hit by Sharpe and Smith on Carter. But Wallabies again concede free kick and Blacks opt for scrum. Ref warns Mortlock that another infringement and a yellow will be issued.
10' So'oilao makes good ground from scrum but ball is spilled forward and Wallabies have scrum to relieve danger.
8' All Blacks win lineout but Wallabies again concede free kick. That's the problem with ELVs, you can infringe at will with little danger of getting punished!!! All Blacks opt for scrum just outside Wallabies 22.
7' Alot of kicking so far. Giteau sends another over the top but this time Sivivatu runs it back at the Wallabies. The wing makes good ground before the Wallabies concede penalty and All Blacks kick for touch into their half.
4' Right direction from Giteau but his effort falls short.
3' Australia win peanlty from lineout and, following a bit of argy bargy between So'oialo and Baxter, Giteau lines up for a shot at goal.
2' Early pressure from the Wallabies and they earn a number of free kicks. George Smith tries a grubber from the second by Muliaina is smart to it and the Kiwis win a free kick and clear to touch. Good start by the Aussies.
1' Matt Giteau gets the game underway.
- The teams are on the pitch, the anthemns have been sung and the All Blacks are laying down the traditional Haka challenge. What a game we have in store!!!
- Indeed, many had been expecting Deans to replace Henry after the All Blacks failure in France. So if a Deans-led Australia win today then there is likely to be all kinds of pressure on Henry. Pressure what pressure?
- But they have won their last two games well and coach Graham Henry has kept faith with the same starting XV. Henry is still looking to repair the damage of last years failed World Cup and nothing less than a victory will satisfy his critics back in New Zealand.
- New Zealand top the table by one point from Australia but have not had things all their own way in this series. In fact, they have lost two of their five games and had already suffered a defeat at the hands of Australia.
- Deans is a Kiwi through and through and knows many of the All Blacks players well from his time in charge of Canterbury Crusaders. That knowledge could prove crucial today.
- Centre Ryan Cross, hooker Stephen Moore, flanker George Smith, lock Nathan Sharpe and prop Al Baxter have all been added to the Australia starting XV as Deans looks to secure silverware in what is his first season in charge.
- Australia are looking to bounce back from their drubbing at the hands of South Africa in their last Tri-Nations game two weeks ago. The Wallabies went down by 50 points on that occasion and coach Robbie Deans has dropped five players from todays starting line up as a result.| Australia | versus | New Zealand |
