Winger Jongi Nokwe became the first player to score four tries in a Tri-Nations match as South Africa routed Australia 53-8. More
80' There it is and the Boks have hammered the Wallabies 53-8 with a superb exhibition of running rugby. Their forwards were totally dominant and their backs took every chance going. What a turn around from last week and the Boks can now look forward to their autumn tour of Europe with some confidence. The Wallabies, meanwhile, will need to regroup big time ahead of their clash with New Zealand in two weeks time. Thanks for joining us.
79' Pienaar adds the conversion to make it 53-8.
79' Boks on the attack again after Januarie puts in spuerb tackle on Palu. Rossouw runs a superb line and when he is held up short he pops ball up to Ndugane. 51-8.
75' Strong run from Cross moves Wallabies into Boks' 22, but the visitors concede penalty for not staying on their feet and Januaries clears up field.
72' Rossouw on for Bekker in the second row.
70' So many tries and so many subs it's hard to keep up with what' happening. What is clear though is that the Wallabies are being well and truly thumped. This will be a big set back for Deans and his squad, who had been building well and must have thought they had a good chance of the title. All Blacks will be strong favourites now.
69' Couple more changes for the Boks. Watson on for Ndugane, a flanker for a wing, and Januarie for Du Preez.
69' Pienaar converts his own try to make it 46-8.
69' This time Pienaar gets through, taking advantage of poor Aussie defence at a lineout to score under posts. 44-8.
65' Boks going for a seventh try and Jantjes almost puts Burger clear on the right.
56' Jeannie du Plessis comes on for Mujati to join his brother Bismarck in the Boks front row.
56' Nokwe looks to have injured his knee in scoring his fourth try and is replaced on the wing by Montgomery.
56' Changes make an immediate impact as Mitchell goes over in left corner after good work by Mortlock, who fends off big hit by de Villiers. 39-8.
53' Deans rings the changes for Wallabies. Mitchell on for Hynes, Cross for Tahu and Sheehan for Cordingley.
53' Giteau thinks he's scored with a 50m interception but ref calls him back for offside. Not going the Wallabies way today!
49' Unbelievable! Nokwe goes over for his fourth after a neat chip ahead and gather by Ndungane, who puts his opposite wing over! 39-3.
48' Moore now on at hooker for Polota-Nau.
47' As predicted, Smith on for Waugh. No great surprise there. What can Smith do to stem the tide? Get hold of some ball for starters!
45' James adds the conversion and Boks now surely out of sight at 34-3!
44' Turnover by Boks and Fourie boots upfield. Wallabies reply is out on the full and Boks have lineout in their half. Great half-break by de Villiers, who finds Jacobs and the centre wrong foots Ashley-Cooper to sprint over for Boks fifth try from 40m! Great effort! 32-3.
41' 54,000 people in Ellis Park for this clash. Not the biggest of crowds when you compare it with attendances for the Six Nations.
41' James gets the second half under way. Wallabies coach Robbie Deans will no doubt have had a few words with his players and is likely to make a few changes before too long if they do not up their game in the second 40. Expect Smith to come on for Waugh in not too distant future! Boks have had it too much their own way at the breakdown.
37' James nails superb conversion and Boks lead 27-3. Amazing turn around from last week!
36' All Boks now. Burger bursts clear from a lineout, the ball goes left and Nokwe is in for his hat-trick. And we've not reached half-time! 25-3.
30' Baxter is on at prop for Robinson.
30' James on target to make it 20-3. De Villiers will be delighted with his teams' response to all the criticism they have reived this week!
29' Huge clearance by Jantjes for touch on Wallabies 22. Throw not straight and Boks have another attacking scrum. Ball moved wide to left wing but Wallabies pinged for offside. Another chance for James to extend their lead.
26' Boks have stolen the scrum and their forwards batter Wallabies line. Ball comes free and Nokwe is put clear for his second try and the Boks' third! Hynes showed his inexperience by coming in off his line. 17-3.
24' Boks pinch linout, Smith bursts free and finds Spies, but superb tackle by Tuqiri and Polota-Nau prevents certain try! Great effort by the Wallabies pair!
16' Spies is having a stormer and makes another good run after a period of aerial ping pong. But Wallabies force turnover and break down the left through Giteau. Hynes has Tuqiri free outside him but somehow they conspire to mess up a certain try and the ball goes forward!!! How did they not score that?!?
13' Another good scrum from the Bopks. Speis again makes ground, Wallabies concede free kick. Fourie takes it quickly, feeds de Villiers and Nokwe is over in the corner for their second try. Well played Boks. 12-3.
9' James adds the conversion and the Boks are up and running. Good reply from the home side. They needed that try after all the pressure they have been under in the build up and it will settle their nerves. 7-3.
8' Nice move from base of Boks scrum allows Spies to make good ground. James chips ahead but Tuqiri covers well. Hynes makes a risky rub across his posts, Aussies eventually clear but Boks counter and good hands sees lock Bekker cross for the opening try. Good line from the big second row and nice pop pass from Jacobs. 5-3.
3' Ball is recycled and Dunning tries to crash over. Wallabies then spin it wide and Boks eventually concede free kick. Australia opt for a scrum down, Thahu takes crash ball and again Boks penalised - this time a penalty, which allows Giteau to give Wallabies and early 3-0 lead. Poor start for the Boks!!
1' Boks kick ahead from start but only succeed in giving possession to the Wallabies, allowing them to launch an early attack through Horwill from a lineout on Boks 22.
1 Boks are playing for pride today as Australia fly-half Matt Giteau gets the game underway. Expect a big effort from the home pack, who will not want to go down again in what has been a poor series.
- New Zealand currently lead the standings with 14 points, Australia are second with 13 and South Africa third with five. Regardless of the result today, the series will be decided by the outcome of the match between the All Blacks and Wallabies in Brisbane on September 13.
- Ashley-Cooper has recovered from a broken hand, relegating Drew Mitchell to the bench, while hooker Stephen Moore makes way for Polota-Nau.
- Flanker George Smith is the biggest omission, the openside dropping to the bench for Waugh. Former rugby league international Tahu wins his first start, replacing the injured Berrick Barnes, while McMeniman takes the place of Daniel Vickerman who had been ruled out with a shoulder injury.
- Australia coach Robbie Deans has made a number of changes to bring in fresh legs. Fullback Adam Ashley-Cooper, lock Hugh McMeniman, flanker Phil Waugh, hooker Tatafu Polota-Nau and centre Timana Tahu all start.
- Despite last weeks loss, de Villiers has kept fait with his players and made just two enforced changes. Odwa Ndungane returns on the right wing for the injured JP Pietersen, while Zimbabwean-born tighthead Brian Mujati comes in for suspended prop CJ van der Linde.
- Australia have not win back-to-back Test in South Africa for 45 years and the Boks won't want to see that record snapped. They also need a good performance to lessen the pressure on coach Peter de Villiers, who has seen his side lose five of their six games in this series.| South Africa | versus | Australia |
