    • South Africa
    • Australia
    • 17:57 The Springboks now top the table with three home wins from three leaving them with 12 points, while New Zealand have four points from three matches in second. Australia, with a game in hand, have managed just the one point.
    • 80' The hooter goes to put Australia out of their misery and South Africa now have one hand firmly on their first Tri-Nations trophy in five years
    • 79' PENALTY! Morne Steyn adds another penalty and that's it for Australia. Indiscipline has cost them in Cape Town today. Well that and the awesome boot of Morne Steyn!
    • 78' Sure enough South Africa have possession from the line-out but they are pushed back five metres or so. They are just about on the 22m line when Smith knocks the ball out of the Springbok scrum-half's hands. That's a yellow and he knows it. He doesn't even wait for the card to be brandished, he just starts walking!
    • 77' Spies sends a grubber kick through for Habana to chase and the speedy winger is furious when he is brought down without the ball - although it didn't look deliberate as Mitchell skidded through after going to ground. Still it'll be a penalty to South Africa and they want to go for the line-out and try
    • 76' Ashley-Copper breaks down the right for Australia but Habana is there and the Wallabies fullback hands the ball back to Pienaar
    • 75' South Africa press home up the right wing but Bakkies Botha looses the ball forward less than a metre from the tryline and Australia can break
    • 72' Pietersen gets a ball smack in the face to hand the ball to Australia but a knock on by Polota-Nau turns the ball back over to South Africa just inside the Australian half
    • 70' Giteau kicks for the corner as Australia look to retain their momentum but he just overcooks it and the ball dribbles just out over the line with Pietersen there to marshall it into touch
    • 68' CONVERSION! Giteau converts his own try and Australia are 11 points adrift with just over 10 minutes left to play. This could be an interesting conclusion to a match that looked over and done with
    • 67' TRY AUSTRALIA! The ball finds it's way out to Matt Giteau, who decides to go it alone and stretches out to score the try that goes some way to redeeming his earlier mis-demeanours
    • 66' Nathan Sharpe forces his way over the line but he's on his back and Rolland orders the attacking scrum five for the Wallabies
    • 65' James O'Connor breaks for Australia! Habana just misses a cross-field ball that would have left him free for a try. But Turner does enough and finds O'Connor to break down the right. Pierre Spies does brilliantly well to get back and cover although Australia retain possession
    • 63' Bakkies Botha flattens Barnes on the left wing as the Australia centre looks to break upfield. The crowd love it, especially when the replay is shown on the big screen!
    • 59' Australia do well again with some last-ditch defence to deny South Africa the score despite intense pressure from the hosts and the Wallabies clear the ball downfield
    • 58' Jean de Villiers pegs it upfield in chase of a grubber kick through defence. It's a straight foot race between high and Berrick Barnes. Barnes gets there first but spills the ball and Turner does well to collect the ball. He is forced to take it back over his own line though and South Africa will have an attacking scrum just in front of the posts
    • 56' PENALTY! Morne Steyn's seventh successful kick of the afternoon puts the hosts two coverted tries ahead of Australia as the task becomes even tougher for the tourists
    • 55' George Smith has an issue with Rolland now as he penalises the Australian's for playing the ball off their feet once again. Frustration is beginning to boil over now for Australia but they really only have themselves to blame
    • 53' Substitute Dean Mumm makes a great break for Australia but the move breaks down when Matt Giteau is penalised for a spot of back-chat. He needs to be careful or he will find himself dismissed altogether.
    • 51' Australia have lost an incredible six line-outs so far in this match compared to none lost by South Africa. They are being comprehensively out-played on the set peices and that's making all the difference so far
    • 50' Francois Steyn lines up a monster drop goal attempt from just inside his own half and on the left wing but the ball falls short and Mitchell is there to collect and clear
    • 48' Turner produces a great tackle on Du Plessis, flattening him in the process to stop a budding South Africa attack dead
    • 46' Brown is also back on the field now and Australia have done brilliantly well to only concede the three points during that time! They'd be pretty happy with that, you know if they weren't rightly annoyed with themselves for putting themselves in that position in the first place
    • 44' Barnes wit the drop goal attempt. It's not a great kick, if we're honest about it, but it does waste some time and push South Africa back in their own half. And Matt Giteau is now back on the field
    • 41' Righto, are you ready for this?! Berrick Barnes gets the second half underway. Australia still have two men in the bin remember - Giteau with about four minutes left and Brown with five and a half or so ...
    • HT So, catch your breath, get a cup of tea, stretch your legs etc. And we will be back in a few minutes for a second half that could confirm this as one of the best rugby matches in a while!
    • HT Wow! Ok, well. It's been a pulsating first half to this clash but South Africa are firmly on top with a 13 point lead and two-man advantage despite an early try from the Wallabies.
    • 40' Spies is odds on to reach the line as he has the gap. But he knocks on as a last-ditch tackle comes in from Mitchell half a matre short of the line. The hooter goes as the referee blows for the penalty and Australia have escaped. Just.
    • 40' Habana breaks down the left wing with Francois Steyn in support. But he is brought down and South Africa recycle the ball out tot het right where Spies is waiting ...
    • 40' Australia are penalised once again for not releasing the ball as Brussow burrows and forces the error. A quick take from the Springboks as they push for the try just before the interval
    • 39' George Smith charges down a Morne Steyn clearance kick and the Australian's are successfully setting up camp in the South African half so far, hoping to run the clock down
    • 37' Bryan Habana tries to get himself into the game with more impact as he breaks down the centre of the pitch looking to expose the gap. But he knocks the ball forward and Australia turn the ball over
    • 36' PENALTY! Morne Steyn easily adds another three points to the Springboks tally and Australia still have another four minutes until half time with only 13 men on the pitch
    • 36' It just gets worse for Australia as Richard Brown recieves a yellow card just seconds after Giteau parks himself on the bench. Really dumb from Brown as he brings down Brussow before letting go, getting up and picking up the ball in a clearly offside position
    • 35' Ouch! What the hell was Matt Giteau thinking? He charges straight into Fourie du Preez, who is waiting for the high ball. That was unbelievably stupid from the Australia scrum-half as he clatters Du Preez in the head with his left elbow. Giteau was not looking at the ball, he was not making an attempt to collect it and he is rightly sent straight to the bin as Rolland struggles to stop the South Africans from retaliating
    • 33' Francois Steyn breaks across field before turning and heading down the left wing - he finds Habana just on his inside but the Springbok slips as watches the ball and Turner is there to turn the ball over
    • 31' Great start from O'Connor as he slips through four tackles to make 10 metres into South African territory. But he goes to ground and the ball goes out of play
    • 30' Crushing blow for Australia as Stirling Mortlock is forced to go off with what looks like a knee injury. Nineteen-year-old James O'Connor, the bright hope of Australian rugby, will replace him. And he's only just 19 as well, his birthday being July 5th
    • 29' Morne Steyn pulls his kick across the front of the posts from the left wing but the South Africans will be happy with the 10 point cushion they have established for themselves now
    • 28' TRY SOUTH AFRICA! Skipper John Smit produces a simply brilliant chip through along the ground with his left foot for Habana to chase. The speedy left wing can't quite get there as Turner goes to ground to try and grab the ball. But the Australian winger fails and Victor Matfield is there to dive on the ball as it dribbles over the line
    • 27' Steyn had the distance, 48.1m by the way, but couldn't quite find the direction - just pulling the ball wide to the right as Australia escape
    • 27' Another penalty against Australia as Moore receives an offical warning for slowing the ball down at the breakdown. Springbok fullback Francois Steyn will try his luck from inside his own half with the kick
    • 26' DROP GOAL SOUTH AFRICA! The Springboks recycle the ball well out to the left wing before Bryan Habana runs into traffic. Australia turn the ball over and clear but Morne Steyn is in the pocket and thumps the ball between the posts with ease when it reaches him!
    • 25' Brussow steals the ball from an Australian attack before breaking and finding Pietersen. Pietersen makes 20 metres up the right wing before being brought down with on the 22m line. But South Africa recycle the ball and spread it left
    • 24' Juan Smith, by the way, has not gone off the field. In fact, he got up on his feet and jogged upfield as the stretcher was brought on to the pitch much to the delight of the crowd
    • 22' PENALTY! Guess what?! Steyn puts the ball right between the posts with relative ease and South Africa lead once again
    • 21' Yet another penalty goes the way of South Africa as Al Baxter is penalised for playing the ball of his feet. Rolland has a chat with both captains warning them that if this continues he will move to the cards
    • 19' Fourie Du Preez kicks upfield towards the tryline after an attack breaks down on the right wing but Mitchell produces a great take right on the line despite intense pressure from Pietersen
    • 17' Things don't look good for Juan Smith as he is clearly in some trouble with his ankle. He can barely stand despite receiving treatment and if he has to go off that'll be a huge blow for South Africa
    • 15' DROP GOAL AUSTRALIA! Fantastic kick from Berrick Barnes off his less-favoured left foot. The young fly-half found himself in the perfect position right in front of the posts and with a little space, and did well to thump the ball between the posts to snatch the lead back for the Aussies. Phew, its been a frantic first 15 minutes!
    • 14' PENALTY! Steyn puts South Africa in the lead with his third successful kick of the afternoon much to the delight of the incredibly vociferous home crowd!
    • 13' Oh dear, oh dear! Australia are spraying the ball all over the place now. They clearly have some new moves that they've been trying out. The first one worked for the try but since then it's been causing them some troubles as Stephen Moore is penalised for not releasing the ball after diving on yet another loose ball
    • 12' PENALTY! Steyn adds another three points to his personal tally! It's another easy kick and the South African's can go this all day - just chip away at Australia
    • 11' South Africa kick upfield after turning the ball over in their own half but Mitchell appears to get in front of Ashley-Cooper as the fullback collects the ball and Australia are penalised for obstruction
    • 8' PENALTY! An easy kick for the young man rapidly establishing himself as a hero in South Africa and Steyn reduces the deficit to four points
    • 7' Ouch! A shocker from Rolland as well as he mis-awards a penalty. South Africa put in a solid scrum before spreading the ball wide but Australia appear to have turned it over. Rolland awards a penalty to the Wallabies supposedly for a knock-on before changing his mind and handing it to the Springboks for offside. Morne Steyn will have his first kick of the afternoon
    • 6' A woeful unforced error from Ashley-Cooper on his own 22m line as he looks up to plan his clearance kick and instead knocks on Lachie Turner's pass. Horrible! and it'll gift the South African's a real chance at the attacking scrum
    • 5' The Springboks put pressure on Australia right from the re-start with Brussow trying to string a move together but the ball goes to ground and the hosts are penalised for playing the ball off their feet
    • 3' Giteau manages to pull his conversion across just enough to add the extras from the left touchline. 7-0 Australia within five minutes - Robbie Deans couldn't have asked for much more
    • 2' WHAT A FANTASTIC START FOR AUSTRALIA! The line-out is inch-perfect as is the passing as Berrick Barnes picks a great running line before finding Adam Ashley-Cooper on the left wing and the full-back hands off JP Pietersen and forces his way through Francois Steyn to cross over the line!
    • 2' Matt Giteau, making history alongside his sister this weekend as they become the first brother-sister duo to both represent their country in rugby union, opts for an early line-out kicking for the corner
    • 1' Morne Steyn gets the clash underway to a massive roar from the crowd ...
    • 16:00 The national anthems are over on a stunning evening in Cape Town, It's clear and fairly warm with conditions pretty still so there's little excuse for handling and kicking errors today. There's a problem with the ball pressure as referee Alain Rolland waits for a replacement to get the match underway
    • 15:53 Newlands is absolutely rammed with 41,000 tickets sold and there is a fairly sizeable Aussie contingent in the crowd as Stirling Mortlock leads his team out to win his 80th cap. It's nothing compared with the reception reserved for South Africa though!
    • 15:44 South Africa have also named an unchanged starting line-up from last week with Morne Steyn retained at fly-half after scoring a tournament record 31 individual points against the All Blacks. Fit-again Ruan Pienaar starts on the bench at the expense of Wynand Olivier.
    • 15:41 Australia have named an unchanged starting line-up from that clash in New Zealand three weeks ago with the only ommision being that of Phil Waugh on the bench as he is replaced by Peter Hynes
    • 15:18 The youthful Australia have played just the one match, against New Zealand in Auckland, going down 22-16 to the All Blacks despite putting up a strong fight leaving them bottom of the table thus far with just the one bonus point. Check out the full Tri-Nations table here.
    • 15:15 South Africa have been on dominant form so far in this year's Tri-Nations and are looking to complete a clean sweep of home matches today after wins over New Zealand in Bloemfontain and Durban respectively in the last two weeks
    • 15:12 Good afternoon and welcome to this Tri-Nations clash between World Champions South Africa and Australia at Newlands in Cape Town

  1. Comment no. 14.... There is always one who brings up the Lions tour. Don't you know that SA just used the Lions as a warm up for the Tri-Nations? If there was ever going to be any real challenge from the Lions, then the matches would have been scheduled for after we had played some teams a bit more challenging than mighty Namibia (Whom were our warm up match for the Lions BTW). The tour is over, 2 - 1 you lost. Let it go mate. Maybe you may win the series in the next tour in 12yrs time.

Back to Saturday... Yes, SA are playing kicking rugby at the moment and that is working for them. I don't see SA complaining when they are receiving high ball! They actually catch the ball and move it around (or put it up), but they absorb the pressure and return it, and that everyone, is the sign of true champions! This Tri-Nations is very interesting in the fact that The AB's are not firing on all cylinders, but I am sure that the home games for NZ and AUS will be much more interesting.

As for Vanessa... You probably support that sport called football? A game for flowers prancing around on a field thinking that they sun shines out of their backsides! Hmmm, enough said! Not a real mans' sport honey! Sorry!

As John Smit said, "The sign of a great team shows when they are winning games whilst touring and not when they are playing at home." These next few games will separate the believers from the non-believers. I sincerely hope that SA will continue to show great form and take the Tri-Nations home, as well as allow Brussouw to start and keep Burger on the bench. Good luck boys!

  2. all of the people here saying that SA are the best team in the world and that they deserve credit are probably blind...can you people not see how many penalties they are being given? OZ scored a try more than SA and they had superb set attacks and they lost by 12...if anything, it was OZ indiscipline that gave SA the victory, otherwise their buts would have been kicked

  7. I take my hat off to all those who give the Boks credit even though you are not South African. It take a true sportsman to admit an opposing team is truly the best!!! Go Bokka, show you ultimate skill and win the away games!!!!

From James, on Sat 8 Aug 6:17PM
  8. Bokka!!!! Ja this is good performance by the whole squad. Each player deserves to wear that green jersey. Now for the away games!!!! True test of our strength!!!!!

  9. Just shows that the British Isles are not as far behind the Sohern Hemisphere countries as we may have thought.

The Lions were more than a match for the Springboks despite the South African 'physical' game and so would almost certainly be able to cope in a 4-way competition with S.A., N.Z. and Oz. Maybe that should be the format for the next Lions Tour ???????

From bacarelle, on Sat 8 Aug 6:11PM
  10. Plus points for Oz the excellent O' Connor and Berrick Barnes. They'll be in the mix when the WC is in full swing I've no doubt.

  13. I've said it in previous messages but it really is about time we started giving the Boks the credit that is due to them. This side is showing the signs of a truly great side. Awesome performance from everyone. Brussouw superb and what a great captain's performance from Smit! From and envious Englishman

  14. vanessa.safe: As a Welshman watching & playing rugby for many year, I find your comments rather strange to say the least. I don't know where you are from (Botswana, Egypt or the like perhaps?) but either you are just trying to wind people up (if you of course know how to?) or you really are a frigging pillock.

South Africa, at this present time, are playing the best rugby in the world and will be extremely difficult to beat in the near future.

I thoroughly enjoy watching good rugby, and as usual, the Bok's & Wallabies have not let me down, Great game, great players, @#$% comments from you.
