New Zealand wing Doug Howlett scored a record 47th try for his country on Sunday during a untroubled 40-0 win over an under-strength Scotland side in their World Cup Pool C match at Murrayfield. More
80' Callam again driven back over his own line and NZ have one last scrum five. The ball is spread wide to Sivivatu who goes close before knocking on. Ref blows for full-time and NZ book an expected spot in the quarter-finals. For Scotland, they can now focus on the all-important clash with Italy in a week's time. Thanks for joining us.
73' Callam drives at the NZ defence but the ball is turned over because he has no support and hooker Hore makes an impressive break into Scots half. Hore again in support in the next move and he feeds Howlett for his second try of the afternoon. 40-0.
65' Carter converts his own try to make it 35-0.
64' NZ trying to break from deep but Scots defence keeps knocking them back. Scots have a chance now but the ball is spilled and Carter picks up the loose ball and glides away from 55m for another touch down. 33-0.
62' NZ keep the attack going and Williams manages to break a couple of tackles on the right wing and reach over for a try! Nicely played by the big lock to earn a bonus point for NZ's fourth try. 28-0.
60' Scots Lawson on for Cusiter, NZ's Leonard for Kelleher.
58' Thomson on for Lawson at hooker.
56' Penalty NZ and McCaw again tells Carter to go for goal. But the stand-off hits the post, only for Howlett to win the rebound. The ball is fed to Woodcock on the right and he crashes over, only for the pass to be ruled forward! Scrum Scotland.
51' Kerr on for Smith.
44' McAlister breaks upfield beautifully from the kick off and finds McCaw in support. Attack is eventually ended 10m from Scots line and they earn a scrum put in. Good defence from Scots but NZ will expect to put these chances away.
41' Carter makes a half break and finds McCaw in support. The ball is spread wide to So-olialo on the right wing and Scotland concede penalty at the ruck. Carter goes for goal and adds another three points from the touchline. 23-0.
41' Carter gets the second half started. What can Scotland do to stop the onslaught?
33' NZ win lineout and attack down the blindside. First wave is defended but Masoe keeps NZ going forward and Kelleher sends out a dummy before forcing his way over in the corner. 20-0.
30' Carter again finds Sivivatu with a cross kick but great cover tackle from Southwell keeps the powerful winger out. Just! Scrum Scotland 5m from their tryline. Callam does well to secure the ball and Cusiter finds a good touch. But NZ take quick throw and attack down the right through Smith before a knock on allows Scots to clear.
25' Good drive from Callam helps Scots set up a decent attack for the first time. Cusiter pops up beautiful pass to Kerr and the attack is continued down the left touch. But NZ defence holds firm and Scots knock on for a scrum near the NZ line. Decent effort from the Scots!
24' Leonard puts in box kick and Southwell's clearance charged down by Howlett. Prop Smith forced back in the tackle and Parks misses touch with his kick. NZ counter with Evans and So'oialo, Scots penalised for offside and Carter adds another three points from just left of the posts. 15-0.
20' NZ's Evans on for McDonald, who looks injured, and Scotland's Parks on for Paterson, who looks shorn of confidence.
19' Freekick Scotland and Murray takes a quick tap and makes a few yards. But NZ turnover the ball and spread it wide again. Scots turnover this time and Barclay puts his head down. Paterson chips over and Walker almost gathers the ball for a free run in to the line!!
15' NZ win lineout and the ball is spread wide to Howlett on the right and the wing goes over for his 47th international try - a new record for NZ as he overtakes the haul of the great Christian Cullen. 12-0.
6' Carter makes it 7-0 from in front of the posts.
5' Scrum five for NZ and So'oialo pops the ball inside for McCaw to stroll over for the opening try. 5-0.
3' Inch perfect kick from Carter finds Sivivatu unmarked on the left touchline but the winger knocks the ball on. Let off for Scotland and big mistake from Sivivatu. Scotland awarded scrum but they are driven off the ball by a powerful NZ scrum.
1' Chris Paterson gets the game started for Scotland.
- New Zealand are pretty much at full-strength. Nobody really knows their strongest XV but there is not much wrong with the one that's been selected for the Murrayfield game. Conrad Smith is retained in the centre and Sitiveni Sivivatu and Doug Howlett are on the wings. A try for Howlett today would make him New Zealand's all-time leading try scorer with 47. Flanker Reuben Thorne is named in the second row.
- Scotland are saving their best players for the Pool C decider against Italy next weekend. Coach Frank Hadden has named a weakened side and as a result no one is giving them much of a chance against the World Cup favourites.| Scotland | versus | New Zealand |
