South Africa are the new world champions after defeating a spirited England side 15-6 in the World Cup final in Paris. More
80' It's all over - South Africa are the new World Champions and on tonight's performance they just about deserved it. Thanks for joining us.
73' Lovely kick from Tait moves England into Boks 22. They must get something from this position and attack the Boks' throw!
72' Long drop goal effort by Wilkinson but it's off his weak foot and comes up short.
70' 10 minutes to go and Boks leading by 9 points. England need to score soon or they can bid the Webb Ellis trophy goodbye. Boks defence has been superb. Richards on for Worsley - what's going on? A scrum-half on the flank?
69' England lose their lineout throw in Boks 22 and allow James to clear again. England's lineout has let them down this evening.
68' Cueto is taken out late after a clever chip and Wilkinson kicks England deep into Boks 22m area. Superb kick from Wilkinson. England need points here!
65' Dallaglio on for Easter. What can the Wasps man do for England's cause as James finds a good touch?
63' Chuter on for Regan.
61' Blocking from Kay and the Boks have a penalty just inside England's half. Tough kick for Steyn but he drills it right down the middle. Boks extend their lead to 15-6 against the run of play.
60' Nice kick by Gomarsall and Flood pressures Montgomery in his dead ball area. Nudge from Flood sends Montgomery into a cameraman but he's ok. Good opportunity for England!
59' Du Preez kicks straight into touch and England get lineout in Boks half. Boks don't seem sure of how to protect their lead and have stopped playing. meanwhile, England forwards drive Hipkiss into good attacking position in Boks 22.
51' Flood is on for Catt as Sackey sacks Burger at the restart.
50' No mistakes from Montgomery and the Boks lead by six. 12-6. Another error from England.
49' Steyn again makes good ground down the middle and Corry is penalised for hands in the ruck! Another penalty to the Boks and a warning to Corry from ref Rolland.
47' Big scrum here for the Boks as Robinson goes off for repairs. Hipkiss is on as England disrupt Boks scrum and win the put in! Well played England pack! Looks like Robinson is staying off - a groin injury by the looks of it.
46' Moody has been turned and Matfield kicks superbly into England's 22. Cueto does well but Boks have lineout deep in England's half.
44' Wilkinson goes in off the post for another three points to England. 9-6. What a start for England to the second half.
42' Tait bursts through the middle - what a superb run from the young centre - and the ball is recycled to Cueto on the blind side. He's gone over but was he in touch? Huge call for the video ref and he's judged Cueto was in touch. Lucky break for the Boks, but ref has awarded a penalty for an earlier infringement.
41' Vickery has not come back on and has been replaced by Stevens.
41' James gets the second half started. It's not been a great game so far but boy is it tense!
40' Montgomery on target again to put Boks 9-3 ahead as the ref blows for half-time. Strong finish to the half from the Boks and history shows the team leading at half-time has gone on to win all the World Cup finals. But England are still very much in this and will not be too displeased with their first half efforts. What a 40 minutes we have ahead of us!
38' Boks turn England's scrum and get the put in. Huge moment this. England must hold on. Rossouw goes for the line but is held just short! England defence holds firm but eventually they concede penalty.
37' Montgomery is down again, and Vickery also in need of some assistance. Big scrum on England's try line and they must clear it safely!
36' Steyn breaks two tackles and makes yards down the middle. Dangerous attack by the Boks and England are holding on desperately. Smit held up just short. Boks regroup but they knock on within a yard of the England line! Phew!
33' Montgomery and Moody are both limping. Great counter-rucking from England forwards forces turnover and Wilkinson finds another safe touch.
27' England showing some adventure now and running the ball through their backs. But the Boks handle the pressure well, though it took an intervention from Bakkies Botha to stop an overlap. Well played England.
23' Superb chip by James and the fly-half gathers his own kick to set up an attacking position in England's 22. But England hussle well and win a penalty for Boks holding on at the ruck.
21' Another penalty to the Boks for Vickery offside at a ruck. Boks are winning their lineout with ease and England need to do something about that. Steyn steps up for a long shot at goal but pulls it just wide. Relief for England.
17' Great take and pass from Moody at the tail of the lineout allows Shaw to make some heavy yards. The ball is fed to Wilkinson but his drop goal goes wide! Great build up by the England forwards and Wilkinson will be furious with that miss!
14' England force a turnover and Wilkinson kicks up field. James replies for the Boks and they are awarded a penalty for a trip by Moody on the fly-half. Silly penalty by Moody gives Montgomery chance to give Boks the lead and he makes no mistakes. 6-3 South Africa.
13' Sensational touch-line penalty from Wilkinson sees England level the scores at 3-3. Brilliant kick from England's talisman!
11' Boks are putting huge pressure on England's lineout, but Kay just about manages to win one and sets up an attack in Boks 22m. Sackey is well-tackled by Habana but the Springbok fails to roll away after the tackle and England have a penalty.
7' England mvoe the ball to tait in midfield but he slips in his own 22m and is then penalised for not releasing! Suicidal start from the young centre allows Montgomery to kick Boks into a 3-0 lead.
1' Botha pinches England's lineout but then knock the ball on, giving England a good attacking scrum. Fantastic scrum to England and a great start for Brian Ashton's men.
1' Wilkinson gets the game started and Moody makes a big tackle on Burger.
- England also have a number of players who know what it is like to win a World Cup and you cannot buy that type of experience. The Boks have Os du Randt, a winner in 1995, but England have Robinson, Kay, Wilkinson, Gomarsall, Regan, Moody, Corry and Shaw - all members of the victorious 2003 squad. Either way, it promises to be a night to remember!
- If England can stay in touch going into the final quarter then they will be confident of winning. The Jonny Wilkinson factor will play on the Springboks' minds while the England players have shown they know how to close a game out.
- A great deal has been written about both sides in the build up to the final, and it's probably fair to say the Springboks are slight favourites, especially after their 36-0 victory over England in the group stages. But England are a different side now and have forged a remarkable spirit in the face of the criticism they faced earlier in the tournament.| South Africa | versus | England |
