(10-8) Another one bites the dust!! Roger Federer joins the likes of Rafael Nadal in the Rome Masters scrap-heap, and the Czech number two Radek Stepanek wraps up the victory on a second MATCH POINT with a service and celebrates in typical fashion, by doing the worm on the red dirt of centre court! A great 7-6 (5) 7-6 (8) win in hour and 55 minutes for Radek Stepanek.

(7-7) Stepanek has a first MATCH POINT.... And Federer survives after a lengthy baseline rally with Stepanek going long.
6-6 - (5-5) A meek second serve from Federer allows the Czech to claim a mini-break back.

(0-3) Stepanek tries to start out with a serve-and-volley, but no dice as Federer rockets the backhand pass down the line for the winner to take the early mini-break. The Swiss confidently holds his next two serves with another stunning pass and an ace down the T.
6-6 - Federer holds to LOVE to move us into another breaker... Who's your money on?
6-5 - Stepanek moves through a tricky hold to DEUCE, and Federer will serve to send us to a tie-break.

A superb hold to 15 for Roger Federer..... These two men have something in common: glandular fever. Stepenek was plagued by the disease for half of last year, tumbling down the rankings, while the illness has thrown a wrench in Federer's start to the season in 2008.

Federer sets up a BREAK BACK POINT with a great return up the line, and Stepanek does not even get to see a SET POINT as Federer dominates the ensuing point setting up a gorgeous angled volley winner at the net... Back on serve, but Federer will still serve to stay in this match.
5-3 - Federer comes up with a big first-serve to save a BREAK POINT, but gifts the Czech another one with yet another horribly mis-timed backhand. And another backhand shanked out gives Stepanek another break and a chance to serve for the upset win!!
4-3 - There it is! Federer takes advantage of some mistakes to break back to 30 and we're back on serve.
4-2 - Federer holds to keep this competitive.
4-1 - Stepanek holds to 30 with the serve-and-volley as the world number one, in grave danger of being eliminated now, shanks the backhand return horribly wide.
3-1 - Federer finally gets on the scoreboard with a hold to DEUCE as Stepanek continues to apply the pressure.
3-0 - Stepanek holds to extend his lead.
2-0 - And Federer went from unbeatable on serve at the end of that first set to being broken on his first service game of this one! Stepanek is riding high, and Federer is going to have to return to his top form to slow the Czech down. If anyone can do so, it's the world number one.
1-0 - Stepanek opens up the second set with a very strong hold to DEUCE wrapped up with a service winner down the T. He is looking very confident right now.

(7-5) A great serve into the body by Radek Stepanek earns the Czech a double SET POINT, and he takes the tie-break with a sixth ace down the centre line, charging the net and pumping his fist in delight afterwards. A first-set surprise.
6-6 - Stepanek hits his fourth and fifth aces to hold to 30 and send this first set to a tie-break.
5-6 - One more LOVE-Service game for Roger Federer means that Stepanek has won two points off of the Swiss' serve in six return games.....
5-5 - A very gutsy hold to DEUCE by Stepanek, who manages to stay in this match. His girlfriend, and top-ranked Czech on the women's circuit, Nicole Vaidisova is in the stands watching this match today having lost in the first round of the German Open in Berlin.
4-5 - Yet another LOVE-Service game for the world number one, as Stepanek will now serve to stay in the match.
4-4 - An easy hold to 15 for the Czech.
3-4 - Another LOVE-Service game for Roger Federer..... You have to think that a break is coming very shortly.
3-3 - Stepanek secures a tricky hold to DEUCE and then has to retape his racket, which eats up a bit of time.
2-3 - Roger Federer hits his second ace, and has no intention of ceding the early advantage.
2-2 - Stepanek rushes ahead 40-0 and ultimately holds to 15.
1-2 - Still on serve as both men are looking comfortable at the start.
1-1 - Stepanek comes back with his own strong hold of serve.
