TB5-6 - Roddick fires the service winner at 142mph. But the tenacious Djokovic baseline defence makes Roddick force the drop shot, and send it short!! Novak Djokovic has MATCH POINT.
TB4-5 - A steaming Roddick backhand earns him the mini-break back!! Suddenly, we're back on serve in this tie-break and Roddick seems near another comeback effort.
TB3-5 - After the lengthy baseline rally, Roddick is into the net and Djokovic is just two points away.
TB2-4 - Djokovic fires the ace down the T and then an ace out wide to keep the breaker on serve.... And Roddick sends the forehand just long! At the change of ends he has surrendered the first mini-break. Novak Djokovic is three points away from a return to the semi-finals at Flushing Meadows.
TB2-1 -
Roddick sends the forehand error across court and just in. Djokovic is furious at himself for not making a play for the ball. Both players hold their opening service points.
6-6 -
Roddick goes up 40-0 yet again. And he closes out the hold to LOVE to force the tie-break after the unforced forehand error from Djokovic. The pair have split their two previous tie-breaks, and I'm not quite sure who has the edge now.
5-6 - Djokovic rushes ahead 40-0 before closing out the hold to LOVE after the unforced forehand error from Roddick, who has gone from serving for the fourth set to serving to stay in the match!
5-5 - Another ace for Andy puts him ahead 30-0. But he then hits a series of errors, including a seventh double fault to hand his rival a BREAK POINT! Roddick tries the serve-and-volley, but Djokovic easily sends back the backhand lob winner to BREAK BACK!! That's a shot that few in the game can hit so well (Andy Murray comes to mind), and Novak Djokovic has his sites back on the prize. Level in the fourth.
5-4 - Djokovic rushes ahead 40-0 with his 11th ace. And then rounds out the LOVE-Service hold with his 12th. The crowd is still calm, despite the fact that Andy Roddick is about to serve to level this match at two sets all.
5-3 - Roddick rushes ahead 40-0 with his 14th ace right down the T. After none in that first set, A-Rod has pulled out the heavy firepower. He closes out the hold to 15 after the backhand error from the Serbian to move within one game of forcing a fifth set.
4-3 -
A brilliant backhand winner up the line by Roddick earns the American another BREAK POINT, and Djokovic is slightly peeved at himself for that poor positioning to say the least. And Roddick gets it this time!! Another stunning backhand up the line earns him the BREAK lead, and this storming comeback continues.
40-40 - Djokovic makes a late decision to move to the net and sends the volley error long to gift away the TRIPLE BREAK POINT. Djokovic saves all three, and Roddick will be ruing those missed chances! He is just 2-for-9 on BREAK POINTS tonight. DEUCE.
3-3 - Roddick grinds out another hold to 30 to keep this set on serve. The crowd again seems subdued though.
2-3 - Djokovic rushes ahead 40-0 before closing out the hold to 15 with the service winner. Still no edge for either man in this fourth set.
2-2 - No cracks in either man's armour at the start of this set, as Roddick holds comfortably to 15.
1-2 - A great stretch forehand winner at the net by Djokovic, who is able to go from side-to-side with such ease for the winning pass and his own 40-0 lead. And Djokovic's LOVE-Service hold is concluded with the ace down the T, his 11th of the match.
1-1 - Roddick blazes through the hold to LOVE as Djokovic is now looking as lackadaisical as the American did through much of the first two sets.
0-1 - Roddick has a real chance at 30-15, but sends the forehand error across court and well wide. A couple of service winners and Novak Djokovic has closed out the needed opening hold to 30. Roddick had 15 winners and five unforced errors in the third set, to 15 and eight for Djokovic.
6-3 -
Roddick rushes ahead 40-0 to get three more SET POINTS, and the crowds erupt in glee as he closes out the third set 6-3 with a massive ace down the T! This one is going to four sets, and if Novak Djokovic is not careful it could go to a fifth.
5-3 - Djokovic holds to DEUCE. Gutsy stuff. He forces the American to serve out for third set.
40-40 - Another great net play with the lunging backhand volley winner earns Djokovic his Advantage back, but Roddick earns DEUCE with the overhead smash at the net.
40-40 - After the baseline rally, Djokovic sends the unforced forehand error into the net to gift away a SET POINT. The Serbian saves, though, with the big backhand into the corner and leaping overhead smash. Back to DEUCE.
5-2 - Roddick and these home fans explode in delight as Djokovic sends the backhand error into the net and the American is able to hold to DEUCE!!
40-40 - Djokovic blasts the forehand winner at the net to get back to DEUCE, and again move within two points of the BREAK BACK.
30-30 - Djokovic bosses the baseline rally to go up 15-0 on the American's serve.... And another baseline rally goes to Djokovic with a big backhand winner down the line after pushing Roddick off the court.... 15-30..... Service winner. 30-30....
4-2 - Djokovic rushes ahead 40-0 on serve now before closing out the hold to 15 with the service winner wide. This set is still very much in play for the Serbian number one.
4-1 - Roddick rushes ahead 40-0 before hitting the double, then closes out the hold to 15 after easily reaching the lazy Djokovic drop and firing it back for the forehand winner. The Serbian seems to be surrendering this third set.
3-1 -
Djokovic starts this game with his second double fault and then hits the unforced forehand error wide to hand his rival a 30-0 lead...... And then TRIPLE BREAK POINT! An awful service game from the world number three.... He saves the first two..... But shanks the forehand badly on the third to gift his rival the break lead in this third set! The only time Roddick has come back from two sets to LOVE down to win was against David Nalbandian in the semis in 2003 when he won the tournament.
2-1 - Roddick eventually closes out the hold to DEUCE with a service winner. Not super encouraging though.
40-40 - Roddick fires his fourth ace to get to 40-30, but can't close out the hold sending the unforced forehand error into the net. Back to DEUCE.....
1-1 - Djokovic hits some typically devastating groundstrokes to again rush ahead 40-0 on serve before closing out his own opening hold to LOVE with an ace out wide. Djokovic now has ten winners from the forehand side.
1-0 - Roddick grinds through the hold to 30 with a service winner. The stats from Roddick were better in that second set than the first, but still not good. Two aces, nine winners, and nine unforced errors.
3-6 -
Djokovic drills a mighty forehand approach into the corner to set up the overhead smash at the net and get to SET POINT..... And he confirms with the service winner down the T as Roddick can only send his forehand return into the net. Novak Djokovic is only one set away from a rematch of last year's US Open final with Roger Federer in the semis.
3-5 -
Oh dear. Roddick's form falls apart at the wrong time, as he shanks the cross-court backhand effort at the net badly wide to hand the Serbian number one a pair of BREAK POINTS..... And the American surrenders the lead with another forehand error into the net! Novak Djokovic will serve for the second set and the two sets to LOVE lead.
3-4 - Djokovic rushes ahead 40-0 with a service winner, and then closes out the LOVE-Service game with another. Still on serve in this second set.
3-3 - Roddick is much improve on serve, firing a couple of service winners to hold easily to 15. I know it's early, but if this goes to a tie-break, which it may very well might with the way both men are serving, you have to like Djokovic's chances better.
2-3 - A huge serve out wide allows Djokovic to rip the cross-court backhand winner at the net to earn Game Point, which he confirms with a service winner. Four members of the Djokovic fan club are showing their excitement in the front row, with their shirts spelling N-O-L-E.
2-2 - After 44 minutes Andy Roddick serves his first ace of this match to close out another comfortable service hold. The American trying to get this match back on track.
1-2 - Djokovic hits his sixth ace to go up 40-15 (Roddick still does not have an ace), before closing out the hold to 30 after Roddick sends the backhand into the net. Djokovic is doing what he wants to do in keeping these points long.
1-1 - At 0-30 down Roddick actually grinds Djokovic into the error on the lengthy baseline rally, shaking his head in disgust after that point is over! That's usually the sort of point he wins, and it allows Roddick to get back into the game. The American hits a service winner to get back to 30-30 and then a backhand winner at the net after the short Djokovic return to get to Game Point, before closing out the much needed hold with another service winner. Perhaps that will spark the crowd to life.
0-1 - Djokovic starts the second set where he left off the first one, closing out the hold to 15 with the service winner. Djokovic hit ten winners in that opening set to six unforced errors, whereas Roddick's numbers were three winners to 13 unforced errors.
2-6 -
Djokovic fires a backhand pass, that just misses the line by inches to let Roddick back to 15-15. Djokovic then forces the American to play defence with a strong approach into the corner that sets up the volley winner at the net getting himself to 30-30, before a shanked forehand from the former world number one gives Djokovic SET POINT! And thanks to another unforced error from the American, Djokovic is able to close out the first set 6-2 on his first chance in just 26 minutes! Unless Roddick does something dramatic, we could be in for a very short evening in the end.
2-5 - Djokovic stretches his lead with the hold to 30 to move within one game of taking this first set.
2-4 - This home crowd is looking as subdued as Roddick. The American hits another double to let the Australian Open champion get back to DEUCE, but does close out the hold with a service winner and a dry volley winner at the net.
STAT - Djokovic has seven winners to none for Roddick so far tonight.
1-4 - This time Djokovic goes up 30-0 with his third ace before closing out his second hold to LOVE. The Serbian looking stronger, as the American appears lethargic.
1-3 - Roddick's forehand is looking very tired as he drops another forehand error into the net to go down 0-15 on serve yet again. And in the end a third straight break of serve goes the ways of Novak Djokovic, as Roddick makes an awkward moves to the net and hits a difficult half-volley error short. Djokovic back in front.
1-2 -
Roddick is fighting back after a Djokovic double fault and an unforced backhand error into the net gives the American a 30-0 lead. And another error on the jump backhand gifts the eighth seed TRIPLE BREAK BACK POINT..... And Roddick breaks straight back on his second chance as Djokovic commits another error! This could be a gruelling affair tonight.
0-2 -
Roddick has played a very poor opening service game, starting with a double fault before gifting his rival a BREAK POINT chance! And the world number three takes the early lead from the former world number one, hitting an inspired forehand lob winner on the return of serve as Roddick tries the serve-and-volley play.
0-1 - Djokovic hits a couple of aces to open up with a LOVE-Service game. This may be a bit of a grudge match for the Serbian after Roddick noted his proclivity for calling medical time-outs in a recent interview saying about Djokovics injury woes: "A back and a hip? And a cramp? Bird flu, anthrax, SARS, a common cough and cold. If it's there, it's there. There's just a lot. He's either quick to call a trainer or he's the most courageous guy of all time."
0-0 - Djokovic will serve first, having opted to do so after wining the coin toss.
01:15 - It's another steamy night, around 23 degrees Celsius, in Flushing Meadows as these two men are set to meet for the third time. Roddick won their last meeting 7-6(5) 6-3 at the semi-finals in Dubai earlier this year, while the Serbian took their first meeting 7-6(4) 6-4 on his way to the Canada Masters title one year ago.
