  1. 2-6 - That's it!! Federer drops to his knees and celebrates a remarkable fifth successive US Open title. It was a relentless performance from the world number two, one that answered all his critics and then some. Murray had no answer tonight, but they'll be other finals and his time will come. Thanks for joining us during our coverage of the US Open, we'll be back soon!

  2. 2-5 - NOT THIS TIME!! Murray meets his forehand pass and volleys safely home.

  3. 2-5 - Double fault from Murray brings up Federer's first MATCH POINT!!

  4. 2-5 - Interesting, very interesting!! Murray crushes a couple of lovely winners away and gets a break out of nowhere. The chips are still heavily stacked in Federer's favour, but never say never.

  5. 1-5 - Murray delays the inevitable with a brave showing to hold...

  6. 0-5 - Relentless from Federer and Murray is a broken man now. He's won just four points in this set and his dream of Grand Slam will have to wait.

  7. 0-4 - SUBLIME FROM R-FED!!! Murray is down 40-0 and tries to take the fight to him, but the world number two crashes a monumental backhand pass away. Game over, surely.

  8. 0-3 - Comfortable hold for Federer. It's now or never for Murray.

  9. 0-2 - Not looking good for Murray. Federer dominates his serve and breaks with ease to open a 2-0 lead in the third set. Amongst his tour de force in that game was probably the most ridiculous drop-shot you've ever seen - a comical slice from Federer that left Murray scrabbling around at the front of the court like drunk looking for change.

  10. 0-1 - Cheeky drop-shot from Federer to seal his opening service game in set three.

  11. 5-7 - THERE IT IS!!! Federer takes a two-set lead and Murray is going to have produce one of the greatest comebacks in Grand Slam final history to win this now.

  12. 5-6 - Nightmare for Murray!!! Federer absolutely hammers a smash down to set up THREE SET POINTS!!

  13. 5-6 - R-Fed holds, but the point of the match goes to Murray, who chases down a lob with superb agility and battles his way back from an impossible situation to send the New York galleries wild. Up next, the game that could decide the final...

  14. 5-5 - That was a massive game for Murray and thankfully it passed without incident. 5-5 and towards the tie-break we march...

  15. 4-5 - Murray takes Federer to 30-30 with a lovely forehand cross-court winner played off his hip, but the four-time defending champion muscles out the game to put Murray seriously under pressure - serving at 5-4 down.

  16. 4-4 - Ace number two for Murray, and it seals a commanding service game. The Scot is being troubled somewhat by a knee problem however, which may or may not have any bearing on the match. Hopefully it's just a twinge.

  17. 3-4 - A welcome straightforward hold for R-Fed. This set, perhaps even the match, is heading towards a pivotal point here. You can't help feel if Federer breaks Murray he'll win the title in straight sets.

  18. 3-3 - Nice stuff from Murray, who exerts some fine pressure with his serves to hold.

  19. 2-3 - Federer does the business to lead 3-2. What a chance missed for Murray, and you can't help but consider the potential importance of that missed call.

  20. 2-2 - Bish. Bash. Bosh. R-Fed eats up the break points, but he was lucky. A backhand at 15-40 was long and the umpire missed it. Still work to do mind. We're back at deuce.

  21. 2-2 - Well well!! Murray takes it to R-Fed and earns himself THREE BREAK POINTS once more, after forcing an error with a crisp backhand at the advancing Swiss...

  22. 2-2 - Good solid hold from Murray and we're back all square.

  23. 1-2 - Great stuff from Murray, who blasts at Federer as he comes into the net to seal the break and bring things back to serve.

  24. 0-2 - HANG ON A SECOND!!! Murray suddenly finds some inspiration and three break points ensue...

  25. 0-2 - WHAT A SHOT FROM FEDERER!! Having worn Murray down to earn a break point he pulls out the most exquisite forehand pass to leave the Briton is all kinds of trouble - trailing by a set and a break in the second. Ominous stuff.

  26. 0-1 - Lovely tennis from Federer, who finishes the game with a wonderful overhead smash.

  27. 2-6 - Murray is getting blown away here. R-Fed has taken just 26 minutes to wrap up the first set and he does so with a comfortable break on the Murray serve. Murray needs to find another gear or this could be over very quickly indeed. As for R-Fed, he's been in vintage form.

  28. 2-5 - Seriously impressive stuff from Federer, who eases to a service win with some flowing groundstrokes and a wonderful volley winner.

  29. 2-4 - Murray is wide with a forehand and R-Fed has the first break of the match to lead 4-2.

  30. 2-3 - Murray finds the net with a routine backhand and Federer has TWO BREAK POINTS.

  31. 2-3 - Double fault from Murray leaves him trailing 30-0 on his serve.

  32. 2-3 - Good solid game from Federer to keep things ticking along. There's no much to separate the players so far - both are going for their shots and seem intent on stamping their aggression on proceedings.

  33. 2-2 - WHAT A THUMPING PASS FROM MURRAY TO SAVE IT!! Fine aggression from the British number one, who powered down a serve and blasted a rocket with his forehand to see away the danger. Two quick follow-up points finish the job.

  34. 1-2 - Break point Federer! The first of the final.

  35. 1-2 - Naomi Campbell, Chevy Chase, Charlize Theron, Sir Richard Branson...all of the above have used their celeb credentials to score tickets for the big match. The stadium is now starting to fill up.

  36. 1-2 - R-Fed goes for the forehand again, and once more Murray finds a winner - this time taking the game to 30-30. He sends a weak forehand into the net at 30-40 to keep things with serve however.

  37. 1-1 - Good response from Murray, who gets some fine first serves in. R-Fed tries a backhand slice approach at 15-0 down to Murray's forehand and the Scot dispatches him crosscourt with a flourish.

  38. 0-1 - R-Fed wins the toss and chooses to serve. What a first game from the world number two!! He wins to love, with an ace and a wonderful cross-court backhand winner in the mix for good measure. Lovely stuff.

  39. - - The players arrive to a predictably rousing reception from the strangely threadbare crowd in the Arthur Ashe Stadium. Murray appears calm, as does Federer. It's 27 degrees and sunny in New York.

  40. - - Good evening sports fans and welcome to our LIVE!! coverage of the US Open final from Flushing Meadows in New York. Would you believe our very own Andy Murray has made it to the big show, and will be taking on Roger Federer with a chance to become the first British man since Fred Perry in 1936 to win a Grand Slam singles title.
