Djokovic only needs one point to do it! Novak Djokovic wins the Masters Cup! More heartbreak for Nikolay Davydenko, he'll have to wait until at least 2009 for his first major trophy. At 15-30, Djokovic sees Davydenko's two-handed backhand down the ine bounce the wrong side of the line and he has two break points! Davydenko hits the net with a loose forehand and Djokovic has a second chance to serve out this match.

Djokovic responds in the best possible way with a thundering ace, but he looks frustrated when his next first serve hits the net. His second serve is woeful and Davydenko is level in this set!

Maybe those two missed championship points have rattled him, but quick as a flash Djokovic is 0-30 down. He unleashes a fearsome forehand to half that deficit, but then Davydenko earns two break points with a magnificent point won at the net!
5 - 4 - Davydenko gains advantage and and Djokovic hits a shot long to concede the game! no matter, he'll have to serve out the match himslef...

Djokovic howls as he crashes a forehand into the corner of the court to set up two championship points! Davydenko hammers an ace to save the first, and battters him into submission with some solid forehands for the second. We're at deuce...
5 - 3 - 'Ajde Nole!' reads one of the banners form the Serb fans in the crowd, and they will soon be going wild as their boy is one game away from the title.
4 - 3 - Thr Russian is trying his best to step it up a gear now, and he hits a few convincing winners, but Djokovic seems content to finish this match off on his own serve.
4 - 2 - Some more spirited rallying from both players, but Djokovic has that staying power that just seems to be lacking from Davydenko's game today. The Serb lifting the trophy now looks an inevitability.

Djokovic has been simply masterful today, and earns himself another break point, which Davydenko saves with an emphatic forehand smash before hitting an ace to gain advantage. A long backhand brings it back to deuce. After four rounds of deuce, Davydenko holds.
3 - 1 - A long baseline rally ends with Davydenko hitting the net and Djokovic jumping up, punching the air and crying 'Yes!'. and that wasn't even the game-winning point! That comes next, and he's now 3-1 up.

Again Davydenko's first serve is letting him down, and then he slams an elemntary volley into the net to give Djokovic a break point! He saves it with a deadly forehand from the Serb's return. He can't save another and Djokovic is up another break!
1 - 1 - Djokovic gets himself on terms, but Davydenko has come out fighting in this set.
0 - 1 - Djokovic sends a backhand across Davydenko and out of his reach, but the Russian responds with a deft volley at the net the sends Djokovic completely the wrong way. Davydenko holds to get the second set off to a decidedly better start than the first.

Davydenko's first serve percentage in that first set was a pitiful 47%. not that we should diminish Djokovic's achievement thus far, he has been immense.

Something of a comeback from Davydenko now, and he earns a break point. It's too little too late, however, and Djokovic smashes an unreturnable two-handed backhand to take the set.
5 - 1 - Davydenko is giving up so many first serves, so he's on the back foot most of the time before a point has even begun. For a player whose name is pretty much a byword for consistency, he's all over the show. The Russian takes his first game but only after Djokovic pushes him to deuce.

Amazing lob from Djokovic! Davydenko steps forward to attack with a perfectly good sliced shot, and the Aussie open champ lifts an inch-perfect shot just out of the Russian's reach that drops just inside the court! Djokovic holds serve and is now five to the good. He's conceded just six points so far!

Djokovic completes the double-break over davydenko, and surely this set is out of sight for the Russian now.

Davydenko has clearly been rattled, and he is now arguing with the umpire over a line call. The Russian believes that a Djokovic shot was fractionally long, but he waited a moment too long before requesting to challenge, and the umpire won't let him! As ti turns out, the shot was in, and Djokovic has three break points!
3 - 0 - Djokovic slams a cross-court forehand way out of Davydenko's reach to hold to love. He's looking imperious at the moment, while Davydenko's usual ruthless efficiency appears to have deserted him.

The first one hits the net from Djokovic, but he cashes in on the second to take an early lead!
1 - 0 - Davydneko is forced into a defensive drop shot at the net that sits up perfectly for Djokovic to rifle past him with a backhand. The Serb is looking lively and earns two break points...
1 - 0 - Some wonderful rallys in the first few points get this match off to a flyer! The crowd gasp as Davydenko sends Djokovic from one side of the court to the other before smashing home a forehand at the net. Djokovic holds to 30.

08:06 - Novak Djokovic has already had the most successful season of his career, claiming victory in the Australian Open. By contrast, victory for Davydenko would be the biggest win of his career to date. After the controversy he has endured this season, it would be nice for the Russian to end on a high.
