2-6 - SERENA IS THROUGH TO THE SECOND ROUND! A ferocious forehand winner down the line brings up the match point before Meng slaps a backhand long after a heavy rally.
2-5 - Meng holds on once again to avoid an exact repeat of last year's scoreline but Serena will come out after the change of ends to serve for the match
1-5 - Serena still does not look at all pleased with the way things are going but she holds with a forehand volley across court at full stretch to force Meng to serve to stay in the match
1-4 - A poor game from Serena as Meng holds to 15 when her opponent slaps a forehand wide across court
0-4 - A better service game from Serena as she holds with an ace out wide. Serena, the 2007 champion in Melbourne, is just two games away now from the second round
0-3 - Williams breaks for a 3-0 lead as Meng slaps a forehand long and this result is going to be mis-representative of the match unless the Chinese player can start converting some of the chances she is getting against her opponent's serve
0-2 - It is proving to be a real battle for Serena as she is forced to save yet another break point before being able to hold and cement her own break of serve. But Meng hits her forehand return of serve long on break point and Serena does manage to go on to hold
0-1 - Meng looked to be showing some promise at the end of that last set but Serena immediately steps it up a level breaking in the very first game of this second set by some more of those hefty groundstrokes
3-6 - No doubt about it, Serena is not looking her usual dominant self out on Rod Laver today throwing in a double fault to start the game but she has more than enough power in her groundstrokes to out-hit Meng and grabs the first set accordingly
3-5 - Meng produces another battling service game to stay in this first set holding from deuce
2-5 - Meng earns herself a break back point but fails to take advantage of it and three unforced errors in quick succession allow Serena to hold. Meng will have to come out and serve to stay in the first set after the change of ends
2-4 - Much better from Meng as she holds her nerve to stop the run of games against her with a huge first serve to bring up game point and firing away a ferocious forehand winner to hold
1-4 - Williams races through her service game, holding to cement the break and she is running away with this set now
1-3 - Serena grabs the first break of serve, battering Meng from the baseline until the Chinese player eventually hits a forehand long. Meng did well to save Serena's first couple of break point opportunities though
1-2 - Serena holds again, when Meng hits long, to keep things on serve and keep herself just in front. These two have met just the once before, in the round of 64 at the Australian Open last year, with Serena coming out on top in straight sets, 6-3 6-1
1-1 - A pair of holds apeice to open the match
0-0 - Serena to get the match underway then ...
01:38 - The players are out on court now going through their warm-ups and play should get underway in around about 10 minutes time
01:33 - After Pavel's early withdrawal just now, Williams and Meng will be on court a lot earlier than expected so there'll be a short delay while they scramble to get ready behind the scenes
01:30 - Hello and welcome to this first round clash between second seed Serena Williams and Meng Yuan
