  1. - - That was a fantastically hard-fought match at the end, after a bizarre first set that saw some of the world number one's absolute worst tennis. Stay with the site for more live tennis, with Novak Djokovic taking on France's Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the next match up.

  2. 6-2 - A massive backhand from Serena forces the error - 15-0. Huge backhand - 30-0. But two points from the match, Li finds two stunning winners to find a chink of light at 30-30, only to lose it again when a high-kicking Williams second-serve sees Li balloon backhand. One decent first serve on the next point, and the match is over!

  3. 5-2 - Li hangs on gamely after a handful of hard-fought deuces to extend the match a little longer, but she'll need Serena to keep missing those first serves if she's to earn a chance to break back.

  4. - - Li saves the matchpoint, concedes another after the first deuce, but Williams misses it with an over-ambitious go at a winner. Back to deuce...

  5. - - Match point for Williams as Li nets at 30-30...

  6. 5-1 - Serena cruises through another service game to find herself on the verge of the semi-finals.

  7. 4-1 - Serena's really found her timing now, hitting a beautifully-disguised forehand winner to make 0-30 - and then Li's unforced slap in to the net gives three break points. The Chinese player goes long on her forehand once more to lose the game, and smashes a ball away in frustration. And no wonder: she knows that she's blown a chance to pick up the biggest scalp of her career.

  8. 3-1 - Williams holds serve with ease - and looking at her you wouldn't know for a second that she's received her biggest fright of 2009 in this match.

  9. 2-1 - Li slips again, hitting a few more of those loose shots - the backhands into the net, the forehands floating wide - and to hand over two break points at 15-40... and then double-faults to lose her serve.

  10. 1-1 - Williams holds relatively easily - for the loss of just one point - and has that eye-of-the-tiger look about her now.

  11. 0-1 - Huge credit to Li for coming back and holding serve - to love - in the first game of the deciding set. That showed real heart... and you wonder how much the coach's pep talk had to do with it!

  12. 7-6 - Li has just not timed her shots in the tie-break: again and again she attempts dipping backhand winners, again and again she misses the lines... and then nets a straightforward forehand at 6-1 down to lose the set. You can't help but think that Williams will march on to finish this up with ease... and Li's coach obviously has the same idea, as he gives his charge a stern talking-to at the interval. We'd tell you what was being said if it weren't all in Chinese.

  13. - - Serena serves well to go 1-0 in the tie-break, then comes out on top of two thrilling rallies to earn a 3-0 lead - including hitting her opponent with a volley - before a good serve takes her to 4-0.

  14. 6-6 - Serena looks like she's going to start imposing her will on the match as she earns break point - but then Li saves the danger brilliantly with some inspired angled shots which see her opponent running everywhere. She pushes on to save the game, and we're in to a tie-break that genuinely could go either way! Could the world number one go out?

  15. 6-5 - Two double faults early in the next game put Serena 15-30 down... and then Li earns a break point as Williams totally mis-hits a backhand! The world number one puts in an ace to save the break point, then hammers home a winner on deuce after Li catches a net cord. Li goes long again with a top-spin forehand and the danger passes.

  16. 5-5 - An absolutely superb backhand winner down the line gives Li the hold to 15, and she's now within striking range of a tie-break which, on the current run of play, she would have to be favourite for. Williams has her power working well, but Li is equal to it on this evidence... and the American's shot placement is letting her down today.

  17. 5-4 - Williams saves the break points after a struggle - and only after Li unsuccessfully appeals the call on her long lob to the back of the court. Then the Chinese player again goes long with one of those deep forehands, and repeats the fault with a backhand. Williams breathes again... but she looked mighty close to going down for a moment there.

  18. - - Williams loses the plot once more, sliding to 15-40 on her own serve... Li has two break points to earn a chance to serve for the match!

  19. 4-4 - A fourth-consecutive quick and easy service game sees Li get to within a couple of games of pulling off the shock of the tournament. Serena seems temporarily to have forgotten that she must win this set to stay in the tournament...

  20. 4-3 - Another comfortable hold of serve for Williams as both players have started to feel the early afternoon Miami heat: the pace has definitely slowed slightly in the last few games.

  21. 3-3 - Beautifully timed, beautifully-judged ground strokes from Li in that game give her the easiest service hold she's had since those early games before Serena had woken up.

  22. 3-2 - Williams holds more comfortably this time round, with the Chinese taking just one point off her opponent as her attempts at carving return winners miss the mark.

  23. 2-2 - Williams is pusing hard to try and find the break in this second set, but perhaps is trying a little too hard: she nets a couple of shots going for big ones to aid Li to an easy service game to 15.

  24. 2-1 - Serena goes to advantage with a superb smash of Li's under-powered lob from the baseline, and the Chinese overhits yet another forehand on the next point to let the world number one off the hook.

  25. - - The match is really in full swing now, and a superb rally at 30-30 on Serena's serve looks to be going the way of the Chinese player... but her final backhand winner lands a couple of inches wide! Those impressive top-spin forehands keep her in it, and the game goes to deuce.

  26. 1-1 - An impressive service game from Li sees her keep Serena at arm's length to race to 40-15, and though she again overhits to lose the next point while attempting a winner, she makes up for the slip with a stunning backhand down the line on the next point to wrap the game up.

  27. 1-0 - Decent start to set two for Li, earning a break point at 30-40 and another after the first deuce, but then you can tell she gets a little over-excited as she pushes for a winner and blasts well past the baseline. Williams breathes again, and comes back to hold serve.

  28. 4-6 - Li gets her act together following a severe talking-to from her coach at the side of the court duing the inter-game break, and picks her feet up to hold to 15 and close out the set. That's more like it - perhaps now if we can have both players performing well at the same time we'll get a decent match out here today!

  29. 4-5 - Li has lost that extra spring of confidence that her early inroads gave her, allowing Serena to power her way through to another love game. The Chinese player is still serving for the set, and with the way things are going at the moment - four lost games in a row - she needs to win it very badly.

  30. 3-5 - Williams continues her good work in fighting back to earn a couple of break points at 15-40 in the next game; Li fights back to deuce, but then concedes another break point and sees the game slip away as she goes wide with an attempt at a backhand winner.

  31. 2-5 - Serena catches a few big first serves to power through a service game to love. She's woken up at last from what was a surreal first 20 minutes or so of this match.

  32. 1-5 - Williams shows a bit of fighting spirit at last, pushing her opponent to deuce - albeit with a bit of help from the net cord - and going to advantage straight away... And Li puts in her first double-fault!

  33. 0-5 - ANOTHER BREAK FOR LI!!!! And this one comes to love, as Serena just doesn't look even vaguely interested about being here today. Li sense blood, and attacks at 0-40 with a great-looking forehand that smacks the tape, loops in to the air and drops down an inch on to the American's side of the court.

  34. 0-4 - Williams wins the first point of the fourth game in a manner that suggests that she is about to fix things - but then loses the next four points in a row. What on earth is going on? Li is not exactly setting the world on fire, but the world number one is up to nine unforced errors already!

  35. 0-3 - Li again attacks the world number one on her serve, earning a couple of break points at 15-40 before netting a couple of shots to see the game going to deuce. Williams gets advantage a couple of times but can't finish the game off, and when Li earns a third break point the world number one finds the net. Are we about to see the biggest upset of all?

  36. 0-2 - Li cruises through her first service game with a string of good first serves that Serena is unable to attack effectively. It's an excellent start for the Chinese player.

  37. 0-1 - It's the worst of starts for Williams: she immediately loses the first three points of the match with sloppy unforced errors to concede three break points! Williams then wins a point, but a good forehand on the next from Li forces an overhit lob from the American and she has lost her serve in the opening game...

  38. - - Welcome to our LIVE coverage of Serena Williams taking on Li Na in the quarter-finals of WTA Miami. It's the third Chinese opponent in a row for Serena - and if she makes it through, she potentially faces a semi-final against her sister Venus, who players Iveta Benesova later on this evening.

  12. Li Na has a great game and she needed to win in 2 sets to beat Serena. She had no business letting Serena try to even fight in that 1st set since all what that did was to drain her and then some and therefore not able to cruise in the 2nd set like she did in the 1st set. Job well done Serena. The only player that can bring you down is your big sister! Slug it out girls...
By the way can somebody upload some of this match for us/me on youtube please....
