6-3 -
Nadal completes the game to love - it's a shame that the end of an absorbing contest has been marred by the injury, but that's still a superbly impressive victory for the world number one. We'll be back at 7.30pm UK time for the last of the quarter-finals, where Juan Monaco takes on Fernando Gonzalez for the dubious pleasure of facing Nadal in the semi-finals.
- - Verdasco is back on his feet but limping slightly - he's clearly just playing through the last few points for form's sake, a very decent effort from a man clearly in pain.
5-3 -
Nadal wins the break, but now Verdasco has an injury timeout as his leg is cramping badly. His calves are heavily strapped anyway, and it seems that he's in great pain.
- - Nadal gets to advantage on the Verdasco serve - but Fernando is limping slightly, and appears to have an injury niggle.
4-3 - Nadal is much less troubled by Verdasco in his next game, holding for the loss of a couple of points - a relief after the epic battles he's fought to win his previous two service games.
3-3 - Two more brilliant points from Verdasco - set up by unplayable serves - to give him the hold to love... but time is running out for him to make things happen.
- - Verdasco pulls out a sublime winner down the left to go to 30-0 on his own serve.
- - Plucky stuff from Nadal. It's always incredible how the very best seem to dig that bit deeper when their serves are threatened.
3-2 - Verdasco misses out on another break point as a shot down the line misses by inches, and then Nadal clears things up a couple of points later as Verdasco's efforts disappear with a long shot over the baseline.
- - At 30-40, break point for Verdasco, he goes for the big winner but once againt the ball drifts just long. That's deuce now... but Verdasco leaps to advantage straight away! Yet another break point!
- - Brilliant tennis from Verdasco, charging to the net to meet Nadal's drop-shot in what is seemingly a lost cause - but he gets to the ball and flips a winner across the court! 0-30!
2-2 - Great effort by Verdasco to fight back and save the game - that took huge grit and effort, and now it's Nadal who will feel slightly deflated at the missed opportunity.
2-1 - Nadal fights back into the game to get to 30-30 but then nets very uncharacteristically - yet Verdasco then does the same twice. Advantage Nadal...
- - Two poor returns from Nadal gift Verdasco a 30-0 start in his next service game.
2-1 - Pure genius from Nadal, time and again getting balls back over the net that he had no right to be returning, then pulling out an incredible dipping crosscourt forehand to finish off the game. He really is awesomely good.
- - Nadal is taking his time about this third game of the second set - he wants no mistakes this time after coming so close to slipping up in that last service game. He's eked out 40-15 so far with some good first serves.
1-1 - Nadal looks like he's about to win a break point with a backhand passing shot, but mishits slightly and it ends up in the net. Verdasco domiantes the next point, and that's a vital service hold just when he needed it.
- - Verdasco is looking solid in this next service game at 30-15 - and he dearly needs a good hold to keep his momentum up to have another crack at the claymeister in the next game... but then he double-faults!
1-0 - Nadal hangs on grimly, and eventually gets over the line as Verdasco goes for the drop-shot just over the net. That'll be a cruel blow, Verdasco will know that he won't get many chances like that against the world number one.
- - Nadal picks his game up to save the break point again; keeping Verdasco running all over the court before forcing him to net. But Verdasco again fights back to earn a break point with a booming forehand! Incredible stuff!
- - Nadal nails a first serve to save the break point, but Verdasco earns another with a powerful forehand right to the corner that Nadal can't reach even though he's right there next to it.
- - Brilliant from Verdasco! An interminably long point is killed off when Verdasco forces Nadal to balloon a forehand, and the underdog charges in to earn a break point.
- - Verdasco needs to make something happen now - and he starts the second set well, pushing Nadal to 30-30 with a great volley after a charge to the net.
6-3 -
The world number six saves the first break point, but then nets under minimal pressure on the next point to lose the set 6-3.
- - Verdasco nets as Nadal drives him deep into the corner - and it's 0-40... this looks like the set for the world number one.
- - Incredible rally, with Nadal returning unplayable shots by Verdasco time and again before grabbing the point - and 0-30 on Verdasco's serve - with a perfect lob.
5-3 - Nadal anticipates Verdasco's cross-court forehand and returns with one of his own at 40-0, but it goes long - yet Verdasco makes the error on the next point, and it's 5-3.
- - Nadal races to 40-0 up as Verdasco seems to be slightly out of puff in this game.
4-3 -
Nadal takes the first of the two chances, and goes a break up - but the way these two are going at it, anything could still happen...
- - It's two break points for Nadal now...
- - A big serve from Verdasco and he seems to be in control of the point, but Nadal pulls out a brilliant lob - and Verdasco is 0-30 down on serve.
3-3 - Verdasco goes for that winner down the left yet again - it's brilliantly hit, but flies just a foot too far and Nadal holds serve.
- - Verdasco tries the same audacious shot again, but it doesn't work this time: 30-30.
- - More awesome tennis from Verdasco, a forehand winner down the line that simply beats Nadal for pace, delivered at full tilt and while bent over almost in half! It's 15-30 on the Nadal serve!
2-3 - Verdasco is on fire with a stunning, dipping cross-court winner that gives Rafa no chance to get to 40-15, then finishes off a sublime game with a dismissive smash at the net. He just does not look initimidated by the fact that Nadal is supposed to be unbeatable!
2-2 - Nadal recovers to win the next couple of points and snatch the game, but Verdasco had him on the ropes for a moment there. This match is shaping up to be a cracker.
- - Verdasco looks in great touch at 15-30 on the Nadal serve, keeping the world number one deep behind the line with quality shotmaking. But as he runs in for the kill, he misses his volley, dinking it into the net! And after all that hard work! It's 30-30.
1-2 - It's a great rally in the last point of the game, but Nadal goes long with a shot down the line and Verdasco hangs on.
- - Verdasco looks to be holding easily after racing to 40-0, but a double-fault and a forehand sliced too wide gives Nadal something to shoot at. 40-30.
1-1 -
Nadal goes long, and Verdasco gets the break! Extraordinary stuff! The world number one does not look happy at this turn of events.
- - Perfect reply from Verdasco, who pulls out a brilliant winner, watches Nadal go long, and then hits a great angled volley from the net to earn three break points!
1-0 -
There's the break already! Verdasco double faults on the first break point, and that's about as disappointing a start as he could have imagined.
- - It's a cagey opening game that stumbles to 30-30 - but then Nadal fires a forehand winner deep to the left corner that Verdasco just can't get to. Break point!
- - Right then: here we go, and it's world number six Verdasco to get things started.
- - The players are warming up in Rome for what should be a cracker: Nadal and Verdasco have had some cracking matches this year.
