11-9 -
NADAL WINS A REMARKABLE MATCH OF TENNIS. Djokovic pedalling backwards puts the ball into the net, Nadal falls on his back in triumph, Djokovic's face a picture of disappointment.
10-9 -
Nadal with the winner down the line, NADAL'S SECOND MATCH POINT.
9-9 -
Nadal saves though, Djokovic going for the winner puts it agonisingly long.
8-9 -
Djokovic's first serve goes into the net, the second one kept things alive, the Serb enticing Nadal to the net and then flashing it past him. He then wins the next point. A THIRD MATCH POINT FOR DJOKOVIC.
8-7 -
Nadal's serve is unreturnable and after 3 hours and 57 minutes NADAL HAS A MATCH POINT.
7-7 -
The first serve goes wide adn the second brings another big rally. Djokovic slipped down half way through the rally and still recovered to continue, Nadal winning it with a big forehand which Djokovic could not get turn around quick enough to get.
6-7 - Another epic rally gives DJOKOVIC ANOTHER MATCH POINT.
6-6 -
Nadal takes the point though, another big rally from behind the baseline with the Spaniard taking the point with a forehand down the line.
5-6 -
Djokovic could not return Nadal's first serve to the backhand. Nadal's next shot goes long though following the rally. DJOKOVIC SERVING FOR THE MATCH
4-5 -
He can't, but Nadal puts his attempted cross court forehand into the net on the following point.
3-4 -
Both players continue to exchange shots from the baseline before Nadal puts it long, can he cement his mini-break?
3-3 -
Nadal marches to the other side of the net...after he sees to his water bottles, towels, rackets and bags of course. Still on serve.
2-3 -
Serve and volley first up from Djokovic and then long from Nadal. All points on serve so far.
2-1 -
Nadal wins his two service points on balls which Djokovic puts long and wide.
0-1 -
Djokovic starts up with an ace.
6-6 - Nadal double faulted to take Djokovic within two points of victory. The Spaniard evened things up at 30-30 when Djokovic put the ball long and then went 40-30 up when the Serb slammed the ball into the net from a serve that rose viciously on Djokovic. The next point was plain ridiculous from Djokovic though, on the run to his backhand side, at full strength, he put the ball back across court to win a point that Nadal thought was won. It was to no avail though. Nadal holds and we are going to a second tie-break.
5-6 - The adrenaline may well be pumping, but it does not mean that Djokovic is not trying to conserve energy, he uses the serve and volley tactic first up and it works perfectly with Nadal pushed back for the big serve. He holds to 15, sealing it by going big down the middle and hitting a solid shot out wide on the return.
5-5 - Nadal starts with a big ace out wide to Djokovic's forehand. The adrenaline has kicked in now for the Serb as he hustled to return a ball he no right to get to, Nadal still took the point though and the next two as well. Five all now.
4-5 - Djokovic was solid there, he took an early lead and looked particularly good on the high ball.
4-4 - Nadal and Djokovic both hit some big winners early on in that big game. It then became a game of cat and mouse, firstly from the Serb, who just kept returning everything Nadal threw at him. Then came Nadal, sensing Djokovic was on the defence he came to the net to fizz a ball past him. Play goes backward and forward between deuce and advantage Nadal, before Djokovic slammed a forehand wide.
3-4 - A very big hold for Djokovic, he started well with an ace but was then merely a spectator, unable to move on the second point as Nadal put a forehand past him. It looked as though he was struggling to move and that it could be the beginning of the end. He comes through it though; does he have the strength to actually break Nadal?
3-3 - The game goes 15 all and Djokovic puts his hands in a prayer position and raises his head to the heavens, looking for divine intervention. It does not come though, and Nadal wins the next two points against a very lethargic looking Djokovic. Instead of going for the long rally, he tried to go for the quick winner a couple of times there. Nadal holds to 30.
- - Djokovic is now the one receiving treatment. Don't forget, one of these two will have to do it again tomorrow against either Federer or Del Potro.
2-3 -
WE ARE BACK ON SERVE. This time it was Djokovic to fall 0-30 down with a double break. The Serb took the next point with Nadal putting the ball into net and then letting out a growl of frustration, he took the next one as well. Then came an amazing point, brilliantly played by the pair of them, Nadal taking the excruciatingly long rally with a drop shot that Djokovic could not quite get to. The Serb then began to cramp up, pulling at his quads and stretching them on the umpire's change. Nadal makes no mistake at break point.
1-3 - A perfect drop shot gives Djokovic the early advantage and it is then doubled when Nadal double faults, the second fault occurring very strangely indeed. The ball just did not come off the racket at all and bounced before the net causing Nadal to growl at his racket, expecting to see a broken string, there was not to be one though. That set up two break points for Djokovic, the first was saved with a big serve, the second taken though. The Serbian slammed a big forehand on the line sending Nadal wide, leaving the rest of the court for Djokovic to smash the ball into.
15-40 - Two break points to Djokovic
1-2 - It looked like the pressure was getting to Djokovic there. He began the game with a double fault and then kicked the clay in anger at a point which he won with nice touch at the net. There was yet another long rally, this one going over the net 26 times with the advantage shifting from each player, Djokovic taking that point and the next one to confirm the hold.
1-1 - Nadal also holds, this time to love. Very routine stuff for the man from Majorca. Pressure now on Djokovic.
0-1 - Djokovic sends down his fourth ace of the afternoon and follows it up by hammering a forehand into the corner. A big hold to 30.
- - How must Djokovic be feeling? He will surely feel that he should have converted some of those break point. Nadal looked down and out, he was missing shots that are usually routine for him and don't forget he had the trainer out and has a heavily strapped right knee. Who will win this match? It is too close to call.
7-6 -
SECOND SET GOES TO NADAL. Djokovic saves those two set points forces make Nadal serve it out and he takes it when Djokovic puts the ball long.
6-3 -
Three set points to Nadal
5-3 -
Incredible tennis from both players, Djokovic hits his best ball of the day to make it 4-3. Nadal responds with some relentless tennis, pushing Djokovic wide and then putting the back past him.
4-2 -
Nadal wrestles back the advantage after a big rally, it looked like that point was going to go to the Serbian. Nadal follows up on the Djokovic serve with a shot that just, just clips the line. A mini-break to Nadal.
2-2 -
Djokovic pushes his return into the net to make it two all.
6-6 - Djokovic has the crowd on his back after ironically applauding their gasps on his shots in the previous game. Nadal sees a break point for the first time but Djokovic still holds on though and takes the game. Djokovic stops mid rally and points out that the ball has gone long, the Serbian really has the crowd on his back now. We are going to a tie break.
40-30 - Set point Nadal
6-5 - Djokovic works another break point, but he cannot take it, Nadal snatching it back again with an ace. An epic game right there with both players playing some good shots and some indifferent shots. Early on the duo exchanged cute shots at the net; it looked like Nadal was going to take the point but Djokovic held on and took that one. Later on Djokovic really should have been more aggressive when he had a chance, but he allowed Nadal to play his shots and to hit a winner. Then a 28 shot rally was won when Djokovic misplayed a drop shot and that set up Nadal to serve out the game.
40-Ad - Break point Djokovic
5-5 - The first time Nadal sees 30 all on the Djokovic serve and he could not capitalise. A long rally on Djokovic's second serve and Nadal fires a bad backhand across court that he is shocked that he missed. Nadal then sees deuce for the first time and cannot go on and see a break point for the first time, sending the ball long. Djokovic then puts away an easy smash to make it five all.
5-4 - A big game for Nadal, he saves two break points, and we finally see that trademark fist pump. Djokovic looked like he had done enough to begin with; time after time putting his forehand into Nadal's backhand and the Spaniard did not have the confidence to do anything with it except put it wide. Nadal lacking confidence, it doesn't happen often. His serve just held it for him though; a monster service saved the second match point. He then holds it out at the second time of asking.
40-40 - And Nadal saves them both.
15-40 - Two break points for Djokovic.
4-4 - Djokovic holds to love and there was nothing to shout about there for Nadal, the Serbian's serve looked very strong there.
4-3 - Nadal holds to 15, he is just hanging in there, it is looking very close as we enter the business end of the set.
3-3 - I have lost count how many times today Nadal has worked the point perfectly and then to miss the final smash, this time ripping the forehand into the net. Djokovic holds to 15, Nadal hasn't had even the smallest chance of seeing a break point.
3-2 - That was Nadal's best game of the match so far; his serve into Djokovic's body looked good and caused the Serb problems.
2-2 - A horrible miss from Djokovic, a long rally sees the ball set up perfectly for the smash which he smashes a long way out. Not to worry though as he takes the game to 15 with a supreme double handed back hand down the line.
- - We are back under way with alot of heavy bandaging on Nadal's right knee.
- - Nadal is currently receiving treatment on his right knee.
2-1 - Nadal saves a break point and takes the game on his second game point chance. Some more good defence from Djokovic against the rallies. Nadal is not being as aggressive as usual and is taking a step back rather than forward most of the time, he is just hanging in there.
30-40 - Break point Djokovic
1-1 - Djokovic holds very comfortably, he has only lost two points when his first serve has gone in.
1-0 - Nadal holds his service game to 15. Another big rally in the middle stages of the point which Nadal eventually won after Djokovic slipped. The Serb has matched Nadal physically so far, it will be interesting to see if he can continue top match him.
3-6 -
Djokovic has taken only his third set from Nadal on a clay court tournament. Nadal has not played great tennis, let us take nothing away from Djokovic though, he has not allowed Nadal to play, not giving him any angles at all. Can he close the match out?
15-40 - Two set points for Djokovic.
3-5 - Nadal holds and perhaps there was some warnings to Djokovic. He started the game poorly, at 15 all he did everything right to construct the point and when it came to hitting the winner he missed it by a long way. And then facing set point his forehand clicked and he looked a lot more confident.
30-40 - Set point to Djokovic
2-5 - A huge point for Djokovic at 30 all. Nadal threw everything into that point and Djokovic had the nerve and the game to force Nadal out wide, and to then slam the ball past him down the centre. This first set looks like it is going to the Serbian.
2-4 - Nadal is not feeling the ball well and hasn't found his rhythm; he looks very similar to some of the poor play he was producing last night against Verdasco. Djokovic is returning everything and is looking very comfortable from the back of the court.
1-4 - Another physically demanding rally to start that game, a 20 shot rally this time. Nadal worked the ball well and looked like he had worked the advantage and would win before once more slamming the ball wide, his ninth unforced error of the afternoon. Djokovic holds to love.
1-3 - Nadal is finally on the board. His hitting still didn't look too clean there, well, not as clean as Djokovic's.
0-3 - Djokovic holds and it is another Nadal error which hands it to him. Nadal moved up from the baseline and worked Djokovic well, he wound up for the final killer blow and sent it two yards long. Nadal's forehand was not firing last night, and it hasn't looked good here either.
0-2 -
Big blow for Nadal, he double faults to hand the first break to the Serbian. There was a fascinating 25 shot rally at 30-15 which Djokovic won when Nadal slammed a forehand into the net. Djokovic was giving Nadal no angle on his returns. Can the Serb afford to have rallies of that length considering Nadal's physical fitness? If things continue as they have been in the early stages it won't matter.
40-Ad - Break point Djokovic
0-1 - A slow start from Nadal and a very quick one for Djokovic. The Serb's serve looked good there and Nadal struggled to return the ball into decent areas.
- -
One minute until the start of the match, Djokovic to be serving first.
- -
So these two meet once again on clay and the third time in five weeks. Nadal beat Djokovic in the final in Rome on May 3, and also beat him in Monte Carlo. Nadal leads the head to head record 13-4, and is 8-0 on clay against the Serbian. If Djokovic wins today he will leapfrog Andrew Murray into third place in the world rankings.
- - Hello and welcome to Eurosport Yahoo!'s LIVE coverage from the first of the Madrid semi-finals between Novak Djokovic and the world number one and home favourite, Rafael Nadal.

Long live king Nadal... better luck next time Djokovic....hope to see another exciting match for the final today
Novak is a great player and he played very well ...
but Nadal was once again demonstrated that he is the best in the world....go RAFA..!!!!!!
Hope Rafa's knee is ok by tomorow so we can wach one more exiting win and masters title for him. Good luck Rafa !!!!!!!1
hmm can't post a URL but can tell you to look up the BBC story where Agassi give nadal a real shot at a GS sweep.
Hope his knee is OK, probably is or he would not have finished so strong.
Gotta find a way to see the match tomorrow. Fed can be licking his chops a little even though he still has a tough match to play today. He's a pretty optomistic fellow in general.
Well done to both players - a terrific match and a pity one had to lose . For anyone confused about rankings Andy Murray will still retain no 3 because last year it was Hamburg Masters at this time and not Madrid Masters (which was later in year) and players will loose points from that (Andy Murray got to last 16 Hamburg and quarter finals here so he will gain points here)
Nadal is from another planet.. my congratulations to him ! Nole don’t drop now, heads up ! this was incredible match ! real masters of tennis :-)
Federer can win roland garros only if djorkvic and nadal arent there
This match is awsome, comparable to last year's wimblendon final. What a mastado fighting spirit !
If Novak take advantage of this fighting spirit to RG or collapse like Federer. I don't think so.
sport is ain't bout the physical.. it requires mental strength too.. it clearly show in the game just now
WOW!!! That's all I could say...
This was a match of a lifetime...
But, Rafa is simply the best...
if u're reading this Adriana , i feel match-point down right now and on the verge of losing the most important thing i my life (yes, you), but i am desperately hanging on, just like Rafa... what keeps me going is only the love for u and your kindness ... hope i am not pathetic and u will find the strength to forgive me ..love u
I`m still wondering how can Murrey stay #3 when he losses 820 points and Djokovic geting 350 or 260(he was defending only 90)???
I feel so sad about Novak...
Poor guy gave it all and it's still not enough...
Impressed by RAFA'S power, that guy really got the game.
Congrats to both of them and thanks for the great tennis show.
What a match of tennis... What a great players...
NADAL DE BIG HEART...Cngrats my guy, u're truly the world NO 1 tennis player.

Hat off to Nole ... i am a Rafa fan and, of course, i am delighted with the result, but both players gave it all... respect Nole, Vamos Rafa
