2-6 -
Game, set and match for Sharapova. Yakimova hitting the ball long to seal it for the Russian.
2-5 -
Sharapova breaks Yakimova, she will now be serving for the set. She sewed up that game with a big backhand, deep to the corner.
2-4 - Sharapova hits a double fault, does not matter though, she holds to 30, the winning point coming after a long rally.
1-3 - The crowd is getting on Sharapova's back, angry at her delay in of the game arguing with the umpire about a questionable call and continuing when the umpire has returned to his seat. At the other end Yakimova is angry at herself for missing a backhand. Sharapova holds.
1-2 - Yakimova, despite hitting her fifth double fault in a row, gets her first game of this third set when Sharapova puts a forehand wide.
0-2 - Sharapova is cooking with gas now. She hits a big ace that Yakimova gets nowhere near, her next serve sends Yakimova wide to bunt it back and Sharapova slams it across court. She holds to love.
0-1 -
And straight away Sharapova breaks Yakimova.
1-6 -
The second is over and it has been dominated by Sharapova. She hit an ace to set up that game, her first ace of the match. The service game which was riddled with double faults in the first set did not occur at all in that set.
1-5 -
Yakimova is struggling here, her mistakes put her in a 0-40 hole, she gets herself back to deuce but her mistakes again cost her and this second set is all but over.
- - Yakimova has a back injury and is currently being bent back and forth by the medical team. The three minute time out has now begun.
- - Yakimova is receiving a medical examination.
1-4 -
Yakimova gets a break back and she didn't really need to do too much. Sharapova put the ball into the net with an attempted drop shot to give the Belarusian three break points. Sharapova then put a routine forehand long. She is still a break up remember but will have to play a lot better than that.
0-4 -
Another break for Sharapova, she seals it when Yakimova puts the ball wide with the whole court to aim for.
0-3 - Sharapova follows up with a solid service game, there were some more big winners there, she has already hit five in this second set.
0-2 -
Lovely play from Sharapova. She gets on the board thanks to a double fault, smashes back a backhand for a winner on the next ball and then plays a cute, delicate drop shot from the back of the court on the next point.
0-1 - A good start for the Russian, holding to 15. She wins it with some serve and volley.
6-3 -
Yakimova holds her serve and that will give her the first set. Sharapova argues a call, not for the first time, which gives Yakimova the advantage and the Russian is unable to get to the ball. Sharapova with some to do.
5-3 -
Sharapova is broken once more. Her game is looking solid in every area, except on the serve. Here she gives up her fifth double fault and has only won 22% of points on her second serve.
4-3 - Yakimova holds her serve to 30, Sharapova putting the decisive put wide.
3-3 -
More break points on the Sharapova serve, but this time they are not saved. Yakimova hitting a winner into the corner of the Russian's backhand. Back on serve.
2-3 -
A break for Sharapova. A good effort earlier in the game to stay alive, running backwards she lobbed the ball to the back of the court and went on to win the point, setting herself up well for the rest of the game.
2-2 - A Sharapova service game and once more there are two double faults and break points. The Russian saves them both though and goes on to take it at deuce following a long, see-sawing rally.
2-1 -
Sharapova breaks back to 30, her power was back and looking good there.
2-0 -
Sharapova double faults twice to give the game to Yakimova.
1-0 -
Yakimova holds to 15 to start off. Sharapova's right shoulder is carrying a bandage to remind everyone where she has been for so long.
- -
So this will be Sharapova's first major since crashing out of the second round of last year's Wimbledon. At her comeback in Warsaw last week she lost to Alona Bondarenko in the quarter finals which pushed up her world ranking to 102. Yakimova has had a good season on the red stuff so far this year, she won in Saint-Gaudens, France and has reached the second round a couple of times at Roland Garros. These two have never met on the court before.

Maria come on! You need this for your career!I don't want others to compare you with Ana Kornikova! So come back !
maria need more surgery on her shoulder. i do not know why she crashes to come on court
come on maria you need more time to recover
The dreamers are a plenty......................lol. Forget about maria for this year. She'll need a second and possibly third operation and insane amount of sweat and dedication for her to ever get back to where she left off, so wish her luck instead of putting intolerable and ignorant expectations on her.
Maria can still pull this off
