- - The second set was tight, but apart from that it was very straightforward for the world number one. It is either Andrey Golubev of Khazakstan or the former world number one, Lleyton Hewitt in the third round.
6-2 -
Gabashvili slams the ball long and that makes it GAME, SET AND MATCH NADAL.
5-2 - Two match points to Nadal.
5-2 - Gabashvili extends his stay of execution for one more game at least. He holds to love.
5-1 - Gabashvili looks a broken man. He lazily puts the ball into the net to give Nadal game point, he then slams an attempted forehand winner also into the net. Uncle Toni has a big smile on his face. Gabashvili is serving to stay in the tournament.
4-1 - As umbrellas go up and the rain begins to fall, the tournament director gets on his walkie talkie to talk all things weather. Gabashvili holds his serve. He is finally on the board in the third set.
4-0 - Gabashvili has a chance to break but cannot convert. Nadal holds once more. If Gabashvili was to make a comeback that was going to be the time.
3-0 -
Gabashvili slams the ball into the net and that is another break and another game to Nadal.
2-0 - Nadal holds in double quick time. Could this be over in double quick time?
1-0 -
A break for Nadal straight away.
- - Consistently all week we have seen the seeds having tight second sets and then walking away with the third set, I wonder if it will be same here as well?
6-4 - Nadal cannot convert the first two match points, but Gabashvili does it for him, slamming the ball long. Second set goes to Nadal.
5-4 -
Gabashvili slams the ball long, that gives it to Nadal to love. He is serving for the set now.
4-4 - Three break points for Nadal.
4-4 - Nadal holds. Gabashvili hits the ball long to hand it to the Spaniard.
3-4 - Nadal somehow does not convert six break point opportunities. The sixth was the most ridiculous, Gabashvili hit the ball into the net but it crawled (or should that be cruelled) over causing big celebrations and then apologies from the Russian.
3-3 - Break point Nadal
3-3 - Gabashvili is 0-15 up and hits a simple double handed backhand into the net, and shows his anger at doing so, it was very simple. Nadal takes the rest of the points from them on. We remain on serve in the second set.
2-3 - Nadal cannot return Gabashvili's serve and that hands the game to the Russian. Gabashvili is angry with the umpire over some of the calls he has received, he throws his towel down is disgust.
2-2 - Gabashvili takes out some spectators after a big Nadal forehand ricochets off of his racket and into the stands.
1-2 - Gabashvili has doubled the number of games he got in the first set. He takes it to 15.
1-1 - Nadal also holds to love.
0-1 - Gabashvili holds his serve to love.
6-1 -
Nadal takes the first set with a breadstick. Gabashvili handed him game point with a very lazy forehand into the net when he could have easily have knocked the ball over the net. Nadal is cruising through this match.
5-1 -
Nadal takes neither of the break points he got at 15-40, but took it at deuce when Gabashvili put the ball long. Prior to that Gabashvili had ruined his chance advantage by double faulting.
4-1 - Double break point for Nadal.
4-1 - Nadal holds it out to 15.
3-1 -
Gabashvili goes 40-15 up, he cannot press home his advantage though. First blood Nadal.
2-1 - Nadal's serve is unreturnable and that sets up game point. Gabashvili then hits the ball a long way wide. A comfortable hold for the man in pink.
1-1 - Gabashvili holds off Nadal
1-0 - No worries though. Nadal recovers and takes the next five points.
0-0 - Three break points for Gabashvili
- -
These two met earlier this year in Miami where Nadal won easily. Expect a similar result here today. But most importantly...Nadal is wearing his resplendent pink polo shirt.
