-- - So, a topsy-turvy match but one that was ultimately won by the power and aggression of Williams, who harnessed the negative energy from a partisan crowd to batter the impressive Safarova into submission.
7-5 -
Venus goes 30-0 up after two quick-moving rallies see Safarova flounder with the killer shot, into the net the second time. And an unforced error again on that rally - into the net with a backhand at the baseline - gives Williams three match points! Williams delays the serve... and pounds it so hard that Safarova just stands there and it bounces off her racquet, on to the top of the net and back on her side of the court. Game, set and match and some entertaining, if error-riddled tennis.
6-5 -
It's advantage Williams though after Safarova's second serve is returned with interest. Her next effort is into the net too, so the second serve is met with a vicious backhand that flies past Safarova and gives Williams a vital break! Williams to serve for the match!!
5-5 - The crowd are annoyed at Williams for daring to reflect her superior ranking by going 30-0 up with yet another bullying display of brutal ground-strokes. Next up she shows off a deft backhand lob, two in succession, the second played weakly by the Czech into the net. Three break points to Williams! She loses the first one as Safarova pumps a backhand into the corner. The crowd prematurely cheer a Safarova smash that Venus stretches to loft back, although she gets the point anyway. And it's deuce now with an unforced error from Venus, getting over-excited and hitting it long.
5-5 - Some ferocious shots from Williams in particular and she gets advantage after sending a frightening double-handed backhand into the corner, one that Safarova skews up in the air. That shot was unplayable. And Williams holds with some more power shots, the crowd have wound her up and she is angry.
4-5 - 30-30 now and the Williams grunt is getting fiercer as Safarova hammers it into the net, to the crowd's collective chagrin. But it IS match point for Safarova after a frustrated Williams smashes it into the net! Not for long though, a quite majestic double-hander down the line to send Safarova's service return skipping off the clay and white. Deuce.
4-5 - Whistles and jeers as Safarova takes the first point in what could be a deciding game. Childish from the fans, who take sides very easily and always favour the underdog. Safarova goes 30-0 up with a double-handed backhand that Venus can't get near and on the next point Williams is really struggling and this could be match point but an unforced error from Safarova to pump it long down the line!
4-5 - Safarrova goes 40-0 up, much to the crowd's delight, but an inch-perfect groundstroke into the far corner by Venus bounces just in. 30-40 now as Williams gets her act togther, but long with a backhand return and it's 4-5 with Williams serving to stay in the match.
4-4 - Williams goes 30-0 up but a powerfully-smashed backhand from Safarova is met by an off-balance Williams who skews it wide. Venus goes 40-15 up and wins the game, though, with some powerful combinations from serve to the baseline.
3-4 - A bit of a squeal from Williams after she gets advantage and a break point, much to the crowd's annoyance. She was only geeing herself up, but they don't really seem to support the Americans at Roland Garros. And, after she goes long with a forehand, the crowd cheer and whistle with it back to deuce. Here we go, the fans in Paris are getting mouthy again... And they let out a collective roar alongside Safarova's when a quality pass down the line after a succession of cross-court shots leaves Venus at a standstill. Advantage to the Czech and long from Venus on the next rally, she holds, 3-4.
3-3 - Williams is threatening to break after going 30-15 up but a solid first serve from Safarova cannot be met with a reply. Decent little rally follows but Safarova is right on the net and with Venus racing into the corners it was always a matter of time before she got the volley in. A baseline rally follows and it's deuce after Safarova goes long. This could be a key game now.
3-3 - A good game for Williams in response, almost a love game but her backhand is long, 40-15... great return from Safarova which Venus smashes into the net, 40-30... but Venus wins to hold with a cute volley at the net, which she got to quickly.
2-3 - Safarova holds after Williams passes long to the left. A love game for the Czech.
2-2 - Williams holds with ease in this tight third and final set, more in keeping with yesterday's play than the second, which was all Williams.
1-2 - Safarova holds despite a battling display from Williams, some good serves that Venus was able to return but usually at some cost. The winning point was quite superb too, a vicious pass from Safarova that even Williams could not hurl herself to reach.
1-1 - One point aside, where Safarova sent Venus scuttling around court, the American has bossed this game with some powerful serving and wins it with her second shot, a screeching forehand down the line after her opponent was caught out wide.
0-1 - Safarova holds with a superb forehand across court into the far corner with Williams just admiring the shot.
6-2 -
Safarova is not losing this set lightly, coming back from two set points down to 40-30 but a wicked ace from Williams sees her through to the second set.
5-2 -
Great fight from Williams to battle from 30-0 down against serve to deuce with a superb backhand into the corner that Safarova just cannot match. And now advantage Williams after a poor drop-shot from Safarova fails to clear the net... Double fault follows, game Williams who is serving for the set!
4-2 - Two unforced errors from Williams to go 30-0 down but she follows up with a dynamic piece of play that sees her double-hand it down the line. 30-30 now and the next point is a classic grunt-fest that ends with Williams mis-hitting into the net and a break point for Safarova which she almost takes with a great pass into the corner but it's called out! That was close, deuce now. Williams holds, 4-2 after a hairy moment.
3-2 - Could have been a love game for Safarova but a double fault gives Venus a chance. Not taken though, easy hold for Safarova.
3-1 - After losing the first point, Williams serves with real power to win the next four and extend a 3-1 lead in the second.
2-1 - Safarova holds with comfort this time, but Williams is still a break up and looks full of energy so expect this to go the distance.
2-0 - Safarova goes 30-0 up and really should have earned three break points after a fizzing return sends Williams sprawling and her backhand up in the air, but a shocking volley into the space afforded on the left goes well wide. It's 30-30 now as Williams cruises back into control of this game and wins with ease.
1-0 -
Two break points for Williams, who looks up for it today, and he takes the break after a supremely powerful return almost knocks Safarova to the ground.

4-3 - As you look around the court there are bored and miserable faces on everyone, including Venus' father, Richard Williams. On the court Williams send down an ace to stop Safarova's break point and then the Russian hits the ball long twice to hand it to Williams.

Williams breaks back with a cute chip over the net.

I'm sorry to see such a negative reaction to Venus. She has entertained true tennis fans for years and long may she continue. If the Williams sisters weren't in the majors they would be poorer tournaments for it. Enjoy them while they are still playing.
Eurosports clearly wanted Venus to lose. As it was a very entertainin match an sam smith n mark petchy sed the best of the tournament. The crowd were not booin Venus, but her supporters hu wer cheerin wen safarova faultered on serve. Good game Vee, u stepped it up wen necessary
Wow!!!! Power to Williams and Big shame to the crowd and to the people who eat themselves raw when this talented player is playing.
I do not understand why people can not accept sports and watch it with fairness and let the best steal the show.
Shame to Roland Garos crowd, Venus has done it again.
Cheers my Blacky, you are different and really you are.
