-- - Next up on Centre Court we have men's number four seed and crowd favourite Novak Djokovic take on France's Julien Benneteau.
7-5 -
At 15-30, Silva has a shot called out in the rally - and the challenge proves the call correct. That gives Serena two match points. Silva slices into the net and Serena Williams is through!
6-5 - Yet another love service hold from Serena, meaning Silva will have to hold and win a tie-break if she is to stay in this match.
5-5 - Serena storms her way up to a match point, but blasts the ball into the net from close range to see it disappear. Silva earns advantage then pulls off a lovely volley at the net to hold her serve!
5-4 -
Serena kills off the hopes of both Neuza Silva and the crowd by unleashing two consecutive aces to hold her serve, but she is feeling a little bit of pressure now.
-- - A very positive return from Silva sees Serena hit the net, and the crowd love that! Serena betrays the fact she is a little worried by punching the air shouting "Come on!" when her opponent hits the net for 30-15. Silva fires an awesome firehans winner down the line on the run - she's really come alive now.
4-4 - Another Silva double fault hands Serena advantage, but the two-times champions fires wide. The two players have a little slice-off at the net which Silva wins, but Serena drags her back to deuce after winning a magnificent rally - all 20 shots of it! Silva pushes Serena way out wide for another advantage, and Serena returns into the net to level things up.
-- - Serena hooks a tremendous forehand on the run past Silva at the net! The Portuguese lets out a cry of frustration as a slice sails wide on the next point. Serena is pegged back behind the baseline but she manages to defend long enough for her opponent to make a mistake.
4-3 - Serena hits back with an ace to start her next service game, and goes 40-15 up with a forehand smash. Williams then digs a shot out from under her feet but can't stop Silva volleying a smash past her! Serena snuffs out hopes of a break with the game's second ace.
3-3 - Or perhaps not... Four rather avoidable errors from Serena in a row see Silva hold serve and keep her level in the set.
3-2 - The first visible wobble on Serena's serve since that opening double fault, but it would be a leap to suggest that she is looking shaky, or anything other than on course to take this set and the match.
2-2 - A small ripple of encouraging applause for Silva goes round as Serena's return into the net puts the Portuguese on the verge of holding again, and she follows that up with a well-handled rally ended with a forehand winner down the line.
2-1 - Silva's return drop right in front of Serena at the net, and she teases her opponent before smashing home the winner. That sets her well on the way to holding to love once more. The American has only dropped three points on serve thus far.
1-1 - Serena lets out what can only be described as a squawk after a drop shot fails miserably. That gives Silva the chance to hold, which she does courtesy of a shanked forehand from Serena.
1-0 - That's a dozen consecutive points for Serena as she carries on her domination of the Grand Slam debutant.
6-1 -
Serena delivers a fearsome forehand return right past Silva to kick off the game, and she doesn't look back from there, breaking to love to seal the opening set.
5-1 - Serena has barely lost focus after that early blip, but now she looks to be up to speed, and she holds serve with no fuss.
4-1 - Disappointed groans meet yet another double fault from Silva. She then draws applause from her critics by wrongfooting Serena with a canny forehand winner. An overhit shot from Serena puts Silva on the verge of holding, which she does with a backhand at the net. The Portuguese certainly deserves to get on the board.
4-0 - Serena serves out to love, wrongfooting Silva to win the game. The Portuguese slips over as she is caught off balance, but she is ok.
3-0 -
Once more, Silva makes a good fist of keeping the point alive as she is sent from one end to the other, but Serena has all the time in the world to hit a winner. When she does finally get a chance at the net, Silva's drop shot can only hit the net. she makes partial amends by rattling home a forehand winner. Serena isn't messing about though, and after earning a break point she relentlessly smashes until Silva finally submits!
2-0 - Serena begins her Wimbledon campaign in underwhelming fashion, serving up a double fault. She follows that up with an elementary serve-volley that is hit long. Silva finds the net twice for 30-30, and then Serena pulls her from pillar to post before just dabbing a winner at the net.
1-0 -
Silva again gains advantage, but serves up a double fault. Serena earns a break point, and Silva can't get over the net and Serena gets the break.
0-0 - Williams puts the pressure on to Silva's serve right from the get-go and earns a break point, but her overhit forehand sees it spurned. Silva is fortunate to see her shot skip off the top of the net, but fails to close the game.
-- - Silva is the first ever Portuguese to play on Centre Court, so Forza Neuza! Portugal has such little Wimbledon pedigree that we don't even have a Portuguese flag icon here! Anyway, it will be Silva to start...
-- -
Here is a rundown of the major threats to Serena adding to her impressive haul of Grand Slams: Wimbledon Women's contenders
-- - Silva is making her Grand Slam debut this afternoon. So perhaps she won't fancy taking a look at Serena's player profile.
-- - Two-times champion and favourite this year Serena Williams takes to Centre Court with her opponent, Portugal's Neuza Silva.

Congrats Serena ! You"re incredible! Everybody 's awaiting for an all Williams final ! Dell uk
Come on,Serena! Trophy is yours. You are the only who deserves it!
I still can't believe that the organizers at WMBN did not seed Venus and Serena, #1 and #2, respectively. They are smoking some powerful ish and I want some, for real. The only person they move up is Sharpova and it's basically unwarranted. You have a #1 that hasn't made it to the 2nd week at WMBN but #2 and #3 have 7 Slams between them behind her? This is the one tournament that doesn't follow rankings, per say, and move up people who deserve it! Bad move, WMBN organizers! You still would have gotten the W v. W potential with them as #1 and #2 but that's all cool.
Anyway, to the match, this was a good win for Serena and she definitely looks good. Just have to see how 2nd and 3rd rounds go since she (and Venus) are always shaky for them but when the 2nd week comes, look out to whoever is left!
good job Serena!!!!
Well played Neuza but Serena still rocks! Now for the defending champion.
One down! six more to go!

Unfortunately for the rest of the ladies, this is not clay court season. They are two unleashed beasts ranked #2 & #3 respectively. One playing now and the other 2morrow. Each will bully their way through 6 matches each before meeting eachother in the finals.
