  1. 4-6 - Serena serves out with only a spot of bother - dropping a couple of points from 40-0 up and she is the first player through to the fourth round where she will face either Daniela Hantuchova or Ai Sugiyama

The Italian has totally changed her tactics from the first set - she used the serve and volley tactic 13 times in the opening set and was passed with frustrating frequency. But she hasn't done it once so far this set

  5. 2-4 - Hello, hello! Williams is left looking incedibly distressed when a, quite frankly, poor double fault hands her opponent a small chink of light

  6. 1-4 - Wililams really is cruising now as she breaks with increasing ease to continue her inexorable march towards the fourth round

  7. 1-3 - No chance of Vinci doing anything there, Serena holds to love.

  8. 1-2 - Vinci stays in touch when it begins to look like Serena is going to run away with the game. 15-40 down she plays a delightful drop shot and follows it up with an ace to get to deuce. She then plays a powerful forehand down the line tro confirm the hold.

  9. 0-2 - Williams' power was becoming a real problem there, some delightful backhands down the line confirm her hold.

  10. 0-1 - Serena breaks Vinci straight away, to love.

  11. 3-6 - Vinci clips the ball over the net to mid court which sits up perfectly for Serena to put away the forehand. Serena needs just the one break point to wrap up this first set in 26 minutes.

  12. 3-5 - Vinci hangs in to force Williams to serve out this set. Serena is hitting some errors on her forehand.

  13. 2-5 - Serena slams a forehand to the back of the court which wrong foots Vinci and she can only clip the ball into the net.

  14. 2-4 - There is her serve and volley, she holds to love. Why didn't she start earlier?

  15. 1-4 - Vinci drops the ball just over the net which Serena easily gets to. Vinci ducks and puts herself into the fetal position anticipating a big shot at her. Smiles alround, a nice moment.

  16. 1-3 - Miss Williams breaks back once more. Vinci left her serves short there and Serena picked out some winner. No sign of any serve and volley from Vinci yet, it is her speciality.

  17. 1-2 - Very well played from Vinci. Serena plays a top lob shot on the first point which Vinci has to go airborne to get near, a great athletic leap to get the ball back. She then slammed a forehand across court when Serena left the ball mid-court. That brought up three break points. Serena saved the first two behind some big serving, but she could not save the third when Vinci played a good slice at the net.

  18. 0-2 - Vinci blows her chance of taking the game by putting the ball into the net from her serve and volley tactic. Williams then took it with a forehand down the line.

  19. 0-1 - A perfect start from Serena Williams, she holds to love.

  20. - - These two have never met on a tennis court before, and judging from Serena's comments from earlier in the week, she probably does not know too much about her opponent. However, saying that, Vinci is not Russian. Of course, over night, Michael Jackson died and Serena has been commenting on his passing on her twitter page. "My heart goes out to the entire Jackson Family," reads her twitter page.
