  1. - - Next up for Roddick will be the Czech Tomas Berdych, who beat Nikolay Davydenko impressively earlier on. Next up on Centre Court, meanwhile, will be Andy Murray against Viktor Troicki.

  2. 3-6 - Roddick holds imperiously, finishing with an ace to round it off in style, and the American takes the fourth set 6-3 to march through to the fourth round!

  3. 3-5 - Roddick is almost spurred on by that break of serve from Melzer, and he hits straight back with two crushing forehands to set himself back on course in this fourth set. The American now just needs to hold to secure his fourth-round place.

  4. 3-4 - A crunching forehand winner from Melzer gives him two break points, the first of which is saved with a powerful ace down the T by Roddick, but a tame forehand into the net gives the Austrian the break back!

  5. 2-4 - Melzer does well to hold under intense pressure from Roddick, and you never know, the nerves may begin to creep in for the American, despite all his Wimbledon experience. The Austrian knows that he has to take him as far as possible in this fourth set.

  6. 1-4 - The American keeps his composure and holds serve to consolidate his break, with Melzer unable to establish himself and attempt to hit back. He will need something special now to get back in the match.

  7. 1-3 - Roddick breaks! A stunning backhand pass from Roddick with Melzer charging to the net gives the American the perfect start to this game, and he capitalises on it to take the early advantage in the fourth set! A Hawkeye challenge from Melzer cannot prevent the American breaking to 30 and seizing the initiative once more.

  8. 1-2 - Roddick holds with a lightning-quick hold, and the American is a man on a mission, racing to his chair and looking very revved up. The number six seed will be happy to be serving first, piling the pressure on Melzer once more to hold.

  9. 1-1 - Roddick forces a break point with a sensational forehand down in the line, but Melzer shows good resilience once more, slamming a forehand cross court and going on to hold serve from deuce.

  10. 0-1 - Roddick gets the fourth set underway with a regulation service hold, and Melzer looks to be bracing himself for a charge later on in the set. The Austrian will have to start quickly on his serve now though.

  11. 6-4 - Well, if you doubted that Melzer may not have the mental strength to serve out for the third set - which I was most certainly thinking - then you would be wrong. The Austrian keeps his cool superbly to serve out to 15 and hold clinch the third set in convincing fashion to set up an intriguing fourth.

  12. 5-4 - Roddick holds again as if to pose the question to himself: 'How did you possibly get broken?' The American is serving so big, it is astonishing Melzer now has a chance to serve out for the third set - can he hold his nerve?

  13. 5-3 - Melzer does half the job, holding serve comfortably to move to within one game of the third set. Again, Roddick was attempting to put the pressure on, but the Austrian finds three first serves and stays calm.

  14. 4-3 - Roddick does all he can, holding his serve to 15 and putting the pressure straight back on Melzer, who now has two service games potentially, in which he must close out the set. Two big serves from Roddick were enough in that game.

  15. 4-2 - Melzer consolidates his break of serve with a brisk and composed hold to 15, and although Roddick was desperate to stamp his authority on the game, he could not get a foothold.

  16. 3-2 - Melzer breaks! The Austrian suddenly finds a new level to go to, stepping up his intensity dramatically to break Roddick and take the advantage in this third set. A flashing backhand winner down the line closes out the game after two fierce forehand returns.

  17. 2-2 - A magnificent backhand pass from Roddick gives him the ascendency on Melzer's serve early on, and a backhand smash into the net from the Austrian gives his opponent 15-30. Roddick forces a break point from deuce, but he misses a chipped backhand, before another goes begging courtesy of a fine volley, with Melzer holding under pressure.

  18. 1-2 - Maybe he can follow occasionally! Roddick, who impressively refuses to give up on approaching the net, despite his numerous missed volleys, follows his serve in once again, and this time flicks a crisp backhand cross court to close out the game with a flourish.

  19. 1-1 - Melzer levels at 1-1 with a composed service hold, showing good character after falling two-sets down, and refuses to fall apart despite his opponent looking utterly dominant.

  20. 0-1 - Roddick opens the third set with a convincing service hold, despite having a bit of a dip in his intensity. The American is entitled to a slight lull after clinching a two-set lead, however.

  21. - - To view a photo of a heavily spun forehand from Roddick in that tie-breaker, click here

  22. 6-7 - A flashing inside-out forehand winner cross-court from Roddick gives him four set points, and a sloppy forehand which goes long from Melzer hands it to him. The American leads by two sets now on Centre Court.

  23. TB2-5 - The fastest serve of the day, 137mph, is served down the T by Roddick, who moves swiftly to 5-2 in this second set tie-break. Melzer is really not at the races in this breaker.

  24. TB1-3 - Roddick follows two errors from Melzer with a fearsome ace, and it looks like going the American's way once again, unless the Austrian can up his intensity.

  25. 6-6 - Roddick races to 40-0 with three first serves, and a second kick-serve enables the American to hold for love, and force a second set tie-break. Can Melzer find the mental edge he needs now to hold his nerve?

  26. 6-5 - Melzer holds his serve to force the set into a defining moment: a break of serve would level the match for Melzer, or a hold by Roddick would take us into a second tie-break.

  27. 5-5 - For the second time in this set, Roddick serves an ace, it is called out, but Melzer overrules the call himself, and the game is the American's, levelling at 5-5 as this set drifts towards a second tie break.

  28. 5-4 - An exquisite lob from Melzer prompts sporting applause from Roddick, who is left bemused at his opponent's inventiveness. Roddick pegs him back to deuce with a fine backhand volley - which is a rare feat for the sixth seed, and a break point follows after a forehand winner, and he saves it with a fiery ace. Melzer then replicates the feat, before saving a third with a brilliant half volley and ending with an ace to show great character.

  29. 4-4 - Roddick rattles along through his service game with the utmost efficiency, barely wavering from his simple but effective approach of huge first serves and flashing forehands to follow up.

  30. 4-3 - Melzer completes a hugely impressive service hold, executing a superb serve-volley to move to 30-15, then following it with an ace. Roddick challenges the final point, but has no luck, and Melzer regains his lead.

  31. 3-3 - Roddick is not at all deterred at having to serve second in this set, and fires a stunning ace down the T to close out the game. In the process, the American narrows the ace-count deficit to just one, which will surely bother his pride slightly!

  32. 3-2 - Melzer uses all his varieties of slice and kick serves to hamper with Roddick's rhythm on return, and the Austrian continues to play well tactically against his powerful opponent.

  33. 2-2 - Roddick levels once more, and you get the impression that Roddick is more focused on breaking serve than Melzer is, with the American chucking away the balls after a forehand winner and focusing on his next task.

  34. 2-1 - Astonishingly, Melzer continues to out-ace Roddick so far today - 14 to 11 - and the Austrian holds to 15, looking utterly faultless in the process - can he keep this up though?

  35. 1-1 - Roddick levels at 1-1, and Melzer was not able to get a foothold in that game, with the American firing three first serves and finishing with an ace which the Austrian sportingly gave him despite a call judging it to have been out.

  36. 1-0 - Melzer holds with nonchalance in the opening game of the second set, but he will need to do more than just hold serve to get back in this match.

  37. - - As the players prepare to get this second set underway, read about how Roger Federer dropped a set in his match against Philipp Kohlschreiber before coming through by clicking here

  38. 6-7 - Roddick takes the tie-break 7-2, and Melzer completely capitulates at the crunch time in the set, with Roddick upping the intensity superbly and holding his composure.

  39. TB1-3 - Melzer successfully overturns a call adjudging a good forehand winner to have been long, but follows it with another unforced error with Roddick in control.

  40. TB0-2 - It is a very poor start from Melzer, who commits two unforced errors to begin the first set, firing a forehand wide and a backhand long.

  41. 6-6 - We are into a first-set tie-break! Melzer does not have too much problem holding serve, with Roddick produce fleeting moments of brilliance, but the Austrian's serve kept him on top, and now both players will have to keep their nerve.

  42. 5-6 - Let us not forget how confident Roddick becomes in a tie-break; the American usually has the edge at the crunch point. The sixth seed holds once more, with two fine serves, and can now have a free hit at Melzer's serve.

  43. 5-5 - Melzer begins with a perfectly-placed serve down the T for an ace, and follows it with another outwide. It is another extremely comfortable service hold from the Austrian, who levels at 5-5 - one break will surely be enough now.

  44. 4-5 - Roddick overturns a clean winner from Melzer which was originally called good, but was very marginally out, but then misses a simple volley at the net. The American is pretty hesitant, but he recovers well with two powerful forehands to hold.

  45. 4-4 - A fine array of slice serves and heavily-spun forehands gives Melzer another hold to 15, and Roddick is really struggling to decipher the Austrian's serve in this first set - the varieties are proving very elusive.

  46. 3-4 - Roddick responds with a comprehensive service hold to love, and throws the balls away after a final ace to demonstrate his confidence and with an almost disdainful 'That is how you serve' body language.

  47. 3-3 - Although Roddick is on terms, Melzer is looking far more clincial on his serve thus far, holding to 15 and appearing entirely confident.

  48. 2-3 - Roddick is severely tested by Melzer, who forces two break points, but the big-serving American bails himself out of trouble with two fearsome first deliveries, and the number six seed comes through to hold.

  49. 2-2 - Melzer races to 40-0, and the Austrian is hardly taking a backwards step either, as both players move swiftly through their service games. Melzer is yet to lose a point on his.

  50. 1-2 - Andy Roddick holds serve again with ease, firing two more first deliveries down the centre, and regaining his lead. You have to say, the American looks very comfortable out on Centre Court as usual.

  51. 1-1 - Melzer is not overawed by his opponent's thunderous start on serve, and holds to love himself to level at 1-1: it is a very fast start from both players.

  52. 0-1 - Roddick holds with consummate ease, and ends with two fierce aces down the T - a perfect start from the American.

  53. 0-0 - Andy Roddick wins the toss and elects to serve first: no surprises there.

  54. - - And that of sixth seeded American Andy Roddick

  55. - - This is the profile of the 26th seed Austrian Jurgen Melzer

  56. - - The weather is absolutely glorious at Wimbledon, with the sun bathing the Centre Court.

  57. - - Roddick has won the pair's eight previous meetings, but it is their first on grass.

  58. - - Sixth seed Andy Roddick is next up on Centre Court for his third-round match against Austrian 26th seed Jurgen Melzer.

Wow, thanks for granting me McEnroe has a "hero", so I assume everyone else I listed was on drugs then? Nobody outside of Ireland has ever heard of Michelle Smith, she's not on the level of Michael Phelps, Carl Lewis or any of the other American all-time Olympic greats. I'm sure that you know a great deal about what "American sport teaches its children"; probably you've never been to America and all of your information about the country comes from the Guardian or its Irish equivalent. Moral of the story; don't let your uninformed and juvenile hatred of America force you to resort to conspiracy theories in order to discount American achievements in "sport". Yes, obviously there are American athletes who use performance-enhancing drugs; a cursory glance at the world of European cycling will show you that drugs are widespread in European "sport" as well!

  4. This match gave am impression how ridiculous it was to allow the large rackets.
Players with no talnet win over talented, provided they Serve and hit harder.
Good old Tennis has died and EPO will rule.

  5. "One Grand Slam with his talent?
Maybe he's not as handy with drugs as the rest of the American heros."

What a stupid comment (shocking on the Eurosport boards!). What "heros" are you even referring to, Sampras, Agassi, McEnroe, Woods, Jordan, etc. They were all on drugs? If you are talking about Phelps and Lance Armstrong neither of them have ever tested positive for anything. Britain (I'm assuming your British) has produced very few athletes of that level, maybe in tiddlywinks and darts but certainly not in tennis where you haven't won anything since the time when horse & buggies were the preferred mode of transportation.

  6. Why wasn't this match on TV? The highest ranking American Male tennis player not having his match televised
just does not make sense. How is the popularity of the sport going to increase if the best American player
is not seen. What is wrong with ESPN?

  8. No wonder there is a lack of interest in tennis in the U.S. -- look how American television treats it's fans. NBC claims live TV. but we all know better. Nothing but tape!!! NBC needs to get out of sports broadcasting. What they do is useless!!

  10. Anyway Brady L I have to go to bed now. I'm a long way from home.
And I'm sorry for calling Andy a waste of space.
He's just a bit expensive to bet on I suppose.
And as for the drugs you deal with it differently over there, I guess. Mr. Rodriguez is still setting records, is still adored by fans, is still earning as much as ever so what can I say? Good night.

  11. Frank: Good on you...that's right. When your face is getting red, put yourself in real jeopardy of being called a feckin eedjit by alluding to Johnny Mac, Pete, Jimmy C. et al American tennis heroes as druggies...What a farce you are. And now so am I now for stooping to that level...usually it takes Reed to drag us down, but you've just bested him!

  17. The reason you can't watch Andy play live is thanks to good ole NBC. They bought this match and will not air it until 3:00 ET, which of course will be long after it is over. Thanks NBC for continuing to not respect tennis fans anywhere.

  20. Why is Roddick always losing third set? Is he making a break or something...
But he plays well, not only with serve. Anyway it'll be tough against in-form Berdych.
