2-6 - Del Potro thinks about heading into the net but backs off as Nadal finds some great length hittint. But eventually the Spanish world number three, who will go back up to world number two tomorrow when the new world rankings are released, hits a forehand long down the line and Del Potro heads into the final
2-6 -
DEL POTRO IS THROUGH TO THE FINAL OF THE US OPEN!
0-40 - Del Potro slices a backhand passing shot straight down the line after a really very decent approach shot from Nadal and the Argentine has THREE MATCH POINTS ...
2-5 - Nadal produces a forehand winner down the line and the a backhand volley winner which gets the crowd going and he sprints back down to the baseline clenching his, tryin to get himself pumped up. But Del Potro comes up with a great serve out wide, followed by a forehand winner into the opposite side of the court to earn himself a game point before Nadal hits a forehand just wide down the line after more intense pressure and the door is slammed shut by Del Potro, who is now just one game away from the final
2-4 - Nadal does well to post another battling hold when Del Potro fails to find the court with a forehand, something that has been rare today. But the Spainard will not lose this match, Del Potro will have to win it
1-4 - Del Potro is just calmly ticking off the games now as he holds to 15 when Nadal sends a forehand return long of the baseline leaving the Argentine potentially just two games from his first Grand Slam final
1-3 - A big cheer goes up around Arthur Ashe as Nadal races through a love service game of his own to at least ensure he has one game on the scoreboard in this set. The crowd want to see a Rafa fightback here but it looks like Del Potro is just playing too well
0-3 - Del Potro has victory within his sights now as he races through a very speedy service game to hold and consolidate the break and leave Rafa two sets to love and 3-0 down in this semi-final
0-2 -
DEL POTRO BREAKS! Nadal looks to be cruising towards a comfortable service hold to open his third set account before a shanked forehand into the net and a double fault let Del Potro righ back in to the game at deuce. Another forehand into the net from Nadal and Del Potro has a break point. The chance goes begging for the Argentine as he hits into the net and Nadal even has a game point to hold but a forehand just wide followed by a forehand long under real pressure from Del Potro and Nadal hands his opponent an early break in this third set
0-1 - Del Potro holds for the opening game of the third set, holding to 30 when Nadal sends a forehand return of serve long down the line
2-6 -
DEL POTRO TAKES THE SECOND SET! The first goes begging when Del Potro hits a forehand into the net but he quickly grabs the two set lead at the second attempt when Nadal hits a forehand into the net of his own. It's a long way back for the Spaniard now
0-40 - Absolutely sensational play from Del Potro as he has Nadal scampering all round the back of the court and a cross court backhand winner from the Argentine off a shorter ball brings up THREE SET POINTS ...
2-5 - Nadal once again looks like he may have a chance against the Del Potro serve as he takes the first two points but the Argentine recovers yet again - he is just looking so calm today - and he holds to leave Nadal serving to stay in this second set
2-4 - This is fast turning into a crucial game for Nadal as he again manages to hold on as Del Potro sends a forehand just long after Nadal has smashed straight at the Argentine from the net. But Del Potro works his way into the net on the next point and earns a fourth break point but once again it goes begging and this time Nadal goes on to hold with a forehand winner of his own
40-Ad - A brilliant winner up the line from Del Potro followed by another forehand long from Nadal hands the Argentine another break point ... Nadal manages to save it getting down well to a forehand volley but he quickly hits into the net off the forehand wing again to gift Del Potro a second chance. This time the Argentine is at fault slapping a forehand long when he had Nadal on the run but once again Nadal produces a forehand error, a off forehand out wide, to hand Del Potro another go
1-4 - Better from Nadal as he crunches a forehand winner across court to bring up an immediate break back point but he just can't maintain his form today and consecutive forehands into the net leave Del Potro with a game point, which the Argentine grabs when Nadal hits long
1-3 -
DEL POTRO BREAKS! Del Potro runs around the ball and thumps a forehand winner staight down the line to bring up a first break point and unfortunately for Nadal, the Spaniard slaps a double fault to concede his serve tamely
1-2 - Del Potro looks to be struggling with the sun on the opening couple of points both of which he promptly drops but just when Nadal thinks he might have a look at the break, the Argentine recovers to hold with another crunching forehand winner
1-1 - Nadal holds to 15 despite looking in a spot of bother at 15-15 when he hits into the net and takes the time to stretch his stomach - only Nadal knows how bad that abdominal strain is hurting today
0-1 - Del Potro is forced to work hard to hold for the opening game of the, saving a couple of break points, the second of which Nadal hits into the net, before the Argentine goes on to hold with a heavy serve that Nadal can only return into the net
2-6 -
DEL POTRO TAKES THE FIRST SET! Nadal saves a first set point with a cross court backhand winner after he had sent Del Potro wide on the opposite side and a second with an ace out wide but a forehand error from the Spaniard hands Del Potro a second chance and this time he grabs it with both hands, crunching an off-forehand across court for a winner
2-5 - Rafa comes up with an outrageous cross court forehand passing shot at full stretch and on the run to bring up a break back point. He hits just long with a forehand on the next point but a double fault from Del Potro (how often does that happen?!) and the Spaniard has a second chance. The Argentine quickly redeems himself with a great first serve out wide that Nadal can only return wide before consecutive forehand errors from Nadal seem to hand him the hold. But the second is correctly challenged by Nadal and Del Potro has to come up with an ace four points later to eventually hold
2-4 - Nadal holds to love when Del Potro slaps a forehand long down the centre of the court and that should get things back on track for the Spaniard. Of course, he needs to break back as well, which is not going to be easy as already Del Potro is serving very well
1-4 - Del Potro takes a tumble mid-way through another service hold to 30, that consolidates his early break. Its nothing serious but the big man takes his time to get to his feet and is a little tentative with his movement on the next couple of points
1-3 -
DEL POTRO BREAKS! Nadal gets himself out of another spot of bother at 15-30 down with some more heavy hitting off which Del Potro again hits a forehand down the line long. The Argentine earns himself a second break chance with a vicious off-forehand right into the corner of the court ... but he quickly drags a forehand into the net after a solid body serve from Nadal but he earns himself a second chance ... and this time he gets it when Nadal hits a backhand volley long of the baseline after being really tested at the net by the Argentine
1-2 - Huge hitting from Nadal off the forehand side which eventually draws the forehand long from Del Potro and it is the Spaniard now who has a break point ... but Rafa slaps a forehand approach shot long to squander the chance before a couple of huge serves from Del Potro see the Argentine recover for the hold
1-1 - Nadal looks to be cruising towards a love service game before an inside out forehand just wide, an unlucky net cord that allows Del Potro plenty of time to set up a forehand winner and a forehand long leave the Spaniard staring at deuce. Nadal has a chance to take the game but squanders it with a double fault before another forehand long hands Del Potro a break point. But the Spaniard forces an error from the Argentine before going on hold when Del Potro shanks a forehand long
0-1 - Absolutely sensational start to the match from both players, but especially Nadal, who produces a stunning backhand drop shot that lands just over the net and that Del Potro cannot return despite doing brilliantly well to get up to the ball. Del Potro quickly recovers though and holds to 15 with an heavy first serve that Nadal can only return into the net
0-0 - Ok, here we go then. The men's semi-finals. Del Potro won the toss and opted to serve first meaning it will be the Argentine to get this clash underway ...
17:10 - This was originally scheduled to be the second of the men's semi-finals but interestingly Nadal had a word with the schedulers and asked to get on first. Having played his quarter-final over three days the only explanation must be that Nadal wanted as much time as possible to recover should he reach the final
17:04 - Hello and welcome to this the first of the men's semi-finals between world number three Rafael Nadal and sixth seed Juan Martin Del Potro

Why is it every time Nadal loses a match , it is because he is injured ? Those brainless idiots should accept the fact that the better player won . Deal with it and stop making excuses !!
rafa u r an icon.........
dont feel bad we r proud of u ......
u r still our hero who will be no 1 again shortly
luv u
its a shocking result.
most shocking for this US open.....
coz i thought nadal is the player who can demolish fedrer.
i hope del porto does it again and wins the slam
I never seen anybody improve so much this particular year than Del Potro!!He has good chance in the finals!
Well done del potro for ur 6:2 series win. U mastered it indeed.
The big Africa strikers were on song this weekend; Drogba, Eto'o, Adebayor, Niang, get to African perspective on africaplays.come
That is a surprising scoreline, a real shocker!
I really dont understand some foul brains here,Tennis is all about winning and the better player wins. when Nadal wins,he has recovered and suprisingly he is hitting form or he has hit form. When he loses oOOh is his head or mouth or stomach. When won the quarters and others,he was incredible but when he loses it is sickness/stomach.There are players naturally gifted who has played more then him but no injurry.this is not football, a good tennis player can play 15yrs without injury but when you force your self into it that is when you get injurry, give kudos to the winner after all this is not the first time they have played each. The likes of Federer,Sampras,Agasi are rare to see. No matter how you try to caption it and put Nadal there,he is still far to compare with them,he has tried,he is a good muscle force player, that is obvious but cannot compare Federer in all accept of the game(TENNIS).All the sick in the brian should face reality as history is there to prove.
Nadal is still one of the best tennis players... becos of him many people are now watching tennis.
you could see he had his abdomen wrapped, with injury he got to the semi finals so he has done well for himself. you haters wait till when he is 100% b4 cndemning him.

raaa..
loads of posts here talking about how nadal is going down when really people should look at how great del potro played. He wasnt intimidated at all by nadal, and one of nadals strongest points is the top spin he puts on the ball but thats played to potros strengths since hes soo tall. Dudes got game, yea nadal was injured but he got beaten in the mind long before the game finished. He was frustrated cos no matter what he did potro came back with something. Nadal could be back to being 100% fit and he still would have lost. If he plays like this in the final then hes definetly good enough to win the trophy.

After Andy's (Murray) exit it would be nice to see a final with two new people: Del Potro and the Djoker in the pack. Keeps tennis interesting.
The Federer - Djocovic final was sheduled to be the first one today and Nadal wanted to play first(he asked for that). That's why the semifinal from the lower part of the draw has taken place first. I don't think that he has not recovered from the las match he had against Gonzales. First of all the match was very short, and second of all if he knew he has not recovered he had not asked to play first. I think nadal was mentaly weak today. And he was a litle injured am the abdominal muscles, but that is not an excuse for this loss. He had that small injury almost the whole tournament. Too bad we can't see a Federer - Nadal final. I think Federer whould have won anyway.
hey guys ,do put it in context , players do have peak periods and not such peak periods...... remember federer last year when every body was writing him off. well lets not judge Nadal on this year's performance as you have all seen him out of the game for a while . judge him on what he does next year , all the same well done boy , i do support you win or lose and you didn`t play badly today, Del porto just played the better power game.you achievement can never be taken away from you. you made a one side federer tennis interesting that is why people can have these discussions.
talking of del boy , i think we do see our soon to be new No. 3 graet game boy.
Del Potro is so cute. And he did very well.
Hope u all the best.
