2-6 - Del Potro wraps up his first Grand Slam title, in just his 14th major, when Federer sends a backhand long of the baseline. The Argentine collapses to the floor as he watches the ball drop long and starts to cry!
2-6 -
AND THIS TIME DEL POTRO GETS IT! DEL POTO IS THE NEW US OPEN CHAMPION!
40-Ad - The second chance also goes astray when Del Potro can only hit a great first serve from Federer in to the net. Federer sets up a game point when Del Potro again hits long but the Argentine comes up with another stunning forehand down the line to get things back to deuce. And Federer slaps down a double fault to hand Del Potro a THIRD CHAMPIONSHIP POINT ...
30-40 - The first goes begging when Del Potro hits just wide, marginally wide, on stroke 18 of a great rally. ONE CHAMPIONSHIP POINT remaining ...

2-4 - Federer double faults the first point of the game but then takes four straight points to hold and keep the pressure on Del Potro. The Argentine, to his credit, is not sitting back on his lead, he's really going for it still on his forehands, looking to break for a second time. And you can't blame him. One break would never seem enough against someone as good as Federer
1-4 - Del Potro holds from 30-30 when Federer sends a backhand down the line wide. The Argentine certainly is showing no signs yet of getting nervous and tensing up
1-3 - Federer holds to 15 when Del Potro thumps a forehand return of serve so far long it actually hits the lines judge on the foot without bouncing first!
0-3 - Del Potro posts another service hold, to 30, when Federer hits long. The world number one challenges but the ball was definitely long, well long. DEL POTRO HAS A 3-0 LEAD IN THIS FIFTH SET
0-2 -

TB4-6 -
Federer sends a backhand wide of the sidelines afetr a couple of huge forehands from Del potro and it hands the Argentine TWO SET POINTS ...
TB2-4 -
Federer stops playing a point because he thinks the ball has been called out. It was actually someone in the crowd and Federer won't get away with that. But the world number one challenges the call and the ball is shown to be out. There's been such a long delay that the umpire tells Del Potro to play two serves which to his credit Federer accepts
TB2-4 -
Del Potro takes three straight points to open the breaker with a couple of stunning forehand winners (surprise, surprise, right?!). Federer does get off the mark with a couple of points before quickly sending a forehand well wide to hand Del Potro the mini-break heading into the change of ends
6-6 - Del Potro holds to love with another huge inside out cross court forehand winner to forced the tie-break, the second tie-break of this match
6-5 - Federer gets Del Potro on the backfoot right from the serve and forces him to hit long eventually before firing down an ace to hold. Del Potro will have to serve to stay in it for a second time
40-40 - Federer looks to be crusing towards a love service hold before a forehand winner from Del Potro and a couple of forehand errors from the world number one let the Argentine right back into the game and he comes up with a stunning cross court forehand return of serve winner to set up a BREAK POINT ... He looks like he's got it too with another cracking forehand. But Federer somehow gets it back and Del Potro hits the resulting backhand into the net. A forehand wide from Federer hands Del Potro a second chance but again he squanders it with a huge forehand that this time spills long
5-5 - Del Potro comes up with a cracking serve that Federer can only hit long to get himself out of trouble at 15-30 before a 131mph ace down the centre of the court to set up a game point. And Del Potro goes on to hold with another huge forehand winner straight down the line. That's impressive!
5-4 - Federer holds to 15 with a cross court backhand winner after pushing Del Potro wide on the forehand side and the world number six will have to serve to stay in this match after the change of ends. This is the toughest possible challenge now for Del Potro
4-4 -
FEDERER BREAKS BACK! Federer earns himself a break back point with a great backhand volley winner across court after getting a Del Potro on the run and the world number one breaks back when the Argentine hits into the net
3-4 - Federer thinks he's held to 15 with an ace but Del Potro challenges the call and the ball is shown to be long (that won't improve his mood much. Del Potro wins the point behind the second serve when Federer hits just long but the world number one then does go on to hold with an inside out forehand winner across court
2-4 - Del Potro holds to 15 to consolidate the break in this set, producing a stunning stretched forehand winner straight down the line on the way, despite Federer thinking he had the point won with a cross court forehand winner
2-3 -
DEL POTRO BREAKS! A series of great forehands to length from Del Potro that Federer simply cannot deal with and the Argentine sets up three break points. He only needs the one though as Federer hits wide off a heavy Del Potro backhand down the line
2-2 - Del Potro dumps a tired-looking backhand into the net to hand Federer another break point. But Del Potro once again saves it with a great backhand winner across court after Federer has run around a forehand return of serve before going on to hold with a great first serve into the body that Federer can only return into the net
2-1 - Federer is still looking pretty stroppy but he does hold to 15, despite Del Potro coming up with another cracking forehand winner - this time down the line
1-1 - Federer earns himself two early break points in this set with a forehand winner. Del Potro saves the first with a forehand passing shot winner and then the second with an inside out forehand winner before going on to hold with another huge forehand - an angled corss court winner that lands right on the line
1-0 - Federer holds for the opening game of the fourth set, despite Del Potro pushing him to 30 and even having a small chance to set up a break point before sending a forehand volley just long of the baseline
6-4 -
FEDERER TAKES THE THIRD SET! A second straight double fault from the Argentine hands the world number one the third set. Ouch!
40-30 - A crunching forehand winner into the corner of the court and a heavy forehand that Federer hits into the net helps the Argentine out of trouble at 0-30. But a double fault hands Federer a SET POINT ...
5-4 - A sensational forehand across court from out the tramline that Federer can only return into the net and Del Potro has another break point. But the chance goes begging when the Argentine fails to make a good connection with the ball. And Federer goes onto hold but the world number one is not at all happy as Del Potro challenges a call, and not in what Federer deems to be a timely manner. The ball is shown to be out as called but Federer rants at the referee for some time, even swearing as he does so. Del Potro will have serve to stay in the set after the change of ends
4-4 -
FEDERER BREAKS BACK! Federer comes up with a stunning cross court backhand winner across court before Del Potro slaps a forehand long to hand the world number one three break back points. The first goes begging when Federer sends a backhand into the net and Del Potro saves the second with a forehand winner after an 18-stroke rally. But Federer gets the break back at the third attempt when Del Potro sends a backhand passing shot well long of the baseline
3-4 -
DEL POTRO BREAKS! The Argentine is really beginning to fire now as he breaks at the first attempt in this third set when Federer sends a forehand wide across court
3-3 - A love service game from Del Potro keeps the pressure firmly on the world number one
3-2 - Del Potro is pretty mad with himself as he lets two points go off the Federer second serve, when he hits long, and the world number one holds to stay in front
2-2 - Del Potro posts another solid service hold to level up once again and keep things on track
2-1 - "VAMOS"! That's the yell from Del Potro as he comes up with a running backhand passing shot down the line to earn himself a break point. But Federer recovers quickly and comes up with a great first serve to hold
1-1 - Del Potro posts an equally speedy service hold to get his second set account underway. This really is a match that could go either way now
1-0 - Federer opens the second set with a very speedy service hold as he looks to reassert his authority in this clash
6-7 -
DEL POTRO WINS THE SECOND SET! Sensational from the world number six as he races up to the net before firing away a forehand and that is the match level!
TB5-6 -
The first goes begging when Del Potro sends a forehand smash well long of the baseline and then second when his forehand down the line drops just long. But the third will be on his own serve ...
TB3-6 -
Del Potro produces an absolutely stunning change of direction forehand winner down the line followed by a backhand winner down the same line to bring up THREE SET POINTS ...
TB3-3 -
There is little to separate the two players at the change of ends as Del Potro sends a forehand into the net to level things tied at 3-3
6-6 - Federer holds when Del Potro sends a forehand just wide across court and this set will be decided on a tie-break

5-5 -
DEL POTRO BREAKS! The Argentine lands a cross court forehand right on the line to earn himself a break point (its called out but Del Potro challenges and the ball is shown to be good). Del Potro then goes on to land a stunning forehand passing shot straight down the line and thats the break! He is pretty pumped up now, Del Potro, as he clenches his fist at the crowd

5-3 - Federer squanders a game point with a double fault but he goes on the get the hold when Del Potro hits a forehand down the centre of the court into the net. The Argentine will have to serve to stay in this second set
4-3 - Del Potro is struggling to string the points together today. He'll come up with a couple of crackers before a shocking error, this time a poor forehand into the net, gets him into trouble. But the Argentine comes up with a big first serve winner to hold and keep the deficit to just the one break in this second set
4-2 - Another fairly simple service game from Federer, a hold to 15 after a couple of shanked forehands from the Argentine, leaves Del Potro facing another must-hold service game
3-2 - Del Potro saves another break point with an inside out forehand drilled across court. A very flat backhand across court from Del Potro hands Federer another chance but the Argentine escapes when Federer hits into the net and the Argentine does well to go on and hold. That would have been it surely if he'd have been broken there. Very, very rarely would Federer let a set and a double break lead go in a Grand Slam final!
3-1 - Del Potro really is being cheered on by the crowd now as they want to see him get back into this. Federer saves a first couple of break points, one with an ace and one with a forehand winner. Del Potro sets up a third but again Federer comes up with a forehand winner down the line, having run round the ball, to save it before going on to hold when Del Potro once again hits into the net
2-1 - Better again from Del Potro as he holds by coming into the net and firing away a high backhand volley to hold and get himself of the mark in this second set
2-0 - This match could be over pretty quickly at this rate as Federer posts a speedy service hold to consolidate the break
1-0 -
FEDERER BREAKS! Ouch! Del Potro really is in trouble now as Federer races through a service break to open the second set

And this time FEDERER TAKES THE FIRST SET needing just the one chance as he fires down an ace out wide.
40-15 - Federer quickly earns himself another TWO SET POINTS when Del Potro sends a forehand return of serve into the net ...
5-3 - Del Potro saves the first with an ace out wide and the second with an emphatic smash across court after a huge forehand into the corner. He also saves the third with another smash after Federer gets far too much air on a forehand drop shot. Del Potro then goes on to hold with another ace down the centre of the court
40-0 - Federer produces a great forehand drop shot that completely wrong-foots Del Potro on the baseline and the world number one quickly has THREE MATCH POINTS ...

4-1 - Federer holds once again, albeit only to 30, when Del Potro puts up a backhand off the drop shot that's right in Federer's wheel-house for the forehand smash
3-1 - Much, much better from Del Potro as he holds to 15 when Federer sends a forehand return of serve well long of the baseline
3-0 - Federer races through a very simple service hold to consolidate the early break. This next service game is very important for Del Potro, who looks pretty shell-shocked right now
2-0 -
FEDERER BREAKS! Federer is looking oninously good already - Del Potro saves a first break point with a huge forehand across court that Federer can only hit into the net and then another with a huge change of direction down the line after a lengthy rally. He also saves a third with another forehand down the line, and a fourth with a great first serve down the centre of the court but the world number one breaks with a forehand passing shot winner whipped across court after an impressively lengthy rally. Federer's defence is just unbelievable
1-0 - Federer opens up with a service hold to 15 when Del Potro sends his a backhand return down the line just wide
0-0 -
Righto, the warm-up is over and we are all ready to go with Federer winning the toss and opting to serve first. So it will be the world number one to get the clash underway
21:18 - Del Potro has also come up against some equally good names beating Jurgen Melzer, Juan Carlos Ferrero, Marin Cilic and of course Rafel Nadal yesterday
21:13 - Federer's path to the final - he has beaten Lleyton Hewitt, Tommy Robredo, Robin Soderling and then of course Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals
21:10 -
So we all know the statistics, Juan Martin Del Potro has never beaten Roger Federer in any of their previous six meetings. But the Argentine did push Federer to five sets in the French Open semi-finals earlier this summer so he does at least know how to get some success
20:49 - So after two long weeks, some rain delays, some great tennis, a healthy dose of chaos and Kim Clijsters remarkable win last night, this is what it comes down to - five-times defending champion Roger Federer against sixth seed Juan Martin Del Potro
20:48 - Hello folks and welcome to Eurosport Yahoo!s LIVE coverage of the men's US Open final

Federe is still the greatest
#240 Diane G... spot on.... you are not the idiot #260 Dazza how is it you spell INBRED (idiot)
diane g post 240 if u read the story correctly he said some other things about his mother well done del porto
bust as for you get your facts right you stupid inbread idiot this is nothing to do about andy murray
Bret you quite clearly need a hug. Thats not quite how it works dude.
Well done del potro, I don't like youre style of play at all, but you deserved the win. Federer played some great points, but im shocked at how badly he served- 11 double faults and serving at 50 percent first serves. Not his best effort at all
How reminiscent is this of the Australian Open final far too many break points squandered by Federer to go unpunished and a poor fifth set. Always next year though, it' snot harsh it's true.
Correction although English is the official language, spanish is now more widely spoken in the USA. We go to ther people's countries and expect them to speak English so for a change why don't we let someone speak their own language, there are enough Spanish speaking people in the USA why didn't the boroadcaster be better prepared for a possible Spanish victory and had a Spanish translator to hand to write in sub titles or translate live?
somebody has been over rated in mens tennis and it is very sad to see attention been take away from those who truely deserve it.Andy murray's ability has been overated just like any other british or us athlet e.g lewis hamilton, tyson gay.i still have a lot to learn so he said.heshd try and include in his learning curriculum the making of a true champion
whhhhaaaaaaaaaaoo!goodness that was a brillant display DELPTR you really dazed me today.who said my genious cant be beaten though if that match is played againg,it will definately be a different ball game or DELPETR do u want tha match to be replayed?
Great Del Potro!!
I'm glad that he won!!!

I am the obsessive fan of Federer. But today I'm glad from the result.cause del potro performed a supernatural effort and opposite of this federer played the worst of his game i've ever seen. no return, no service, no break and no tiebreak:( this result was inevitable. Congratulations Del Potro. You were fantastic. But Federer is a legend and nothing can change this:)))))) even this!!!
From t k, on Tue 15 Sep 1:54AM
A G R E E TOTALY.
FROM WHAT I ON RADIO OF FEDS FIRST SERVES ,,,, A WASTE OF TIME
well done fed.love the way you accepted the defeat.that shows the makings in true champ.tell those who felt grandslams is their birt right and who felt that they can win it again by threatening to kill that very soon that genetic analysis will soon start in female tennis to discover those men who have been posing as women
comment 246!!!!
He has family home he wanted to thank!!!!! So he has the right to speak SPANISH!! other people speak their own languages to thank their fans form their countries nad their families! what s up with you too!!!!
It s not even a question to argue about!!!
Oh, I thought it wouldn't be long before somebody would bring Murray into things. Forget Murray, he wasn't in the final, so save all you ramblings about how rubbish you think he is until he is playing. And he will win a Grand slam. Several actually. And no, I am not Scottish. See, you've got me at it now...
well done Del ptr i thot i was going to see another fantastic display by te genious today but u have just shown that DELP can make things hapen.Andy Murray should learn from this that the making of a true champ is not collections of ATPS
WILL ANY ONE AGREE THAT DEL POTRO PLAYED GREAT AND FED PLAYED OK TONIGHT???
PLEASE BE HONEST AS I MISSED THE MATCH HEARD IT ONLY
To my mind, I think FR is a very good tennis player but what makes him so good is that there are no good men tennis players with strong mental strenght, that's why anytime another player matches him, he becomes so angry which I think is not so good for the game. I would love to see all the men players rise to the occassion just like the women do by competing not just participating.
But Federer is a legend and nothing can change this:)))))) even this!!!
vanessa, comment 239, US Open is held in an English speaking country. So he must speak in English, especially that he knows how to speak in English.. The presenter was not rude at all.
I predict there will never be an end to stupid comments on these pages.
