- - CLIJSTERS 6-3 6-2 – GAME, SET & MATCH – Clijsters serves out the match to love, sealing it with a backhand winner drilled straight down the line. And that was a very good performance from defending champion Kim Clijsters, who is on ominous form in Melbourne Park
- -
CLIJSTERS 6-3 5-2 – BREAK – Hantuchova saves another break point with a forehand winner but once again it is the drop shot that comes to Clijsters just when it’s needed, the Belgian slicing a backhand volley for the drop shot to re-establish her double break lead and leaving her preparing to serve for the match after the change of ends
- -
CLIJSTERS 6-3 4-2 – BREAK – Hantuchova had Clijsters at 0-40 in her last service game, failing to take advantage of it, but this time she does get the break back, riffling a backhand winner down the line after a cross court backhand from Clijsters
- -
CLIJSTERS 6-3 4-1 – BREAK – Clijsters grabs the double break with a backhand winner down the line to end a lengthy rally. The Slovak isn’t playing badly but she just doesn’t have the power to stick with Clijsters, much like in nine of their previous meetings
- - CLIJSTERS 6-3 3-1 – Clijsters is all over the court now, with another very cheeky backhand drop shot out of nowhere helping her on her way to two game points. Only one is required though as she finds a cross court forehand winner, practically on the half-volley, from the baseline
- - CLIJSTERS 6-3 2-1 – Hantuchova is forced to deuce once again on serve but this time she comes through it when Clijsters goes for a barn-storming forehand return down the line, after running around the ball, only to fire well long
- - CLIJSTERS 6-3 2-0 – A double fault and two errors, one ball long and another into the net, from Clijsters hand Hantuchova three quick break back points. Hantuchova hits both the first two into the net before squandering the third with a horrendous miss on a cross court forehand, with Clijsters stranded out wide on the opposite wing. And Clijsters comes back to hold when Hantuchova hits into the net
- -
CLIJSTERS 6-3 1-0 – BREAK – Hantuchova quickly finds herself three break points down, she saves the first but can do nothing about the second as the Slovak over-cooks a forehand down the line and sends it long. Clijsters is firmly in control now
- -
CLIJSTERS 6-3 – SET – A fantastic reactionary forehand down the line that a back-tracking Hantuchova can only return long helps Clijsters on her way to three set points. The first is wasted on a double fault but she gets it at the second attempt by working her way into the net and firing off a forehand winner down the line
- - CLIJSTERS 5-3 – BREAK – Hantuchova makes a good start before Clijsters bounces back with a huge forehand winner. The Belgian drills a forehand wide down the line after running round the ball, clearly furious she yells at herself and promptly drills a backhand return of serve winner across court to level up at deuce. And she goes on to earn another break point when Hantuchova hits into the net. A Hantuchova backhand across court, catches the top of the tape and sits up for Clijsters, who breaks
- -
CLIJSTERS 4-3 – During that last game, Hantuchova asked for the trainer to be called and is now receiving a medical timeout to have her ankle strapped. There was no obvious incident that could have caused the issue but Hantuchova is clearly in a bit of pain as she is having the strapping and also has taken a couple of painkillers, administered by the doctor
- -
CLIJSTERS 4-3 – BREAK – A sloppy game from Clijsters, a forehand into the net followed by two forehands long, hand Hantuchova three immediate break back chances. The first goes begging with a forehand return into the net after a good serve from the Belgian, who also saves the second with a forehand winner. But Hantuchova takes advantage of the third with an off-forehand winner across court. We’re back on serve
- -
CLIJSTERS 4-2 – BREAK – Clijsters gets a big piece of luck as a forehand of hers hits the top of the net and literally rolls over the net for the perfect drop shot. That hands her another break point but just like last time Hantuchova saves it; working Clijsters around the baseline before finding the cross court forehand winner. But Clijsters gets a second chance with a backhand drop shot winner and this time she takes it when Hantuchova hits a forehand long
- - CLIJSTERS 3-2 – Another pretty easy service hold for Clijsters as she posts another game to 15 with an off-forehand winner across court, after Hantuchova had just narrowly missed a forehand down the centre of the court
- - CLIJSTERS 2-2 – This is fast turning into a battle of the forehands, Hantuchova striking first with a drive volley winner right onto the line across court before Clijsters hits back with an off-forehand ground-stroke winner and then a regulation cross court forehand winner. But Hantuchova goes on to hold when Clijsters fails to find the court with a backhand and we’re level once more
- - CLIJSTERS 2-1 – A second solid service hold from Clijsters as she fires down an ace to seal the game to 15, also featuring a stunning, angled cross court backhand winner that she stepped up into the middle of the court to find after working Hantuchova around the baseline
- - CLIJSTERS 1-1 – Hantuchova saves a first break point with a backhand winner riffled down the line, and a second goes begging for Clijsters when she pulls a cross court forehand just wide into the tramlines. And the Slovak goes on to hold with some great hitting, both players working their way around the court before finding a forehand volley that Clijsters can only return into the net
- - CLIJSTERS 1-0 – Clijsters holds her opening game with a cracking backhand winner across court bringing up game point before a solid first serve can only be returned long by Hantuchova
- - Defending champion and 11th seed Kim Clijsters is just walking out on to Hisense Arena now for her clash with 20th seed Daniela Hantuchova. These two have been playing each other since they were 14 so they are pretty familiar with each others games. It promises to be a good match
