- - So, coming up next for Federer will be Juan Martin Del Potro. Those two obviously met in the 2009 US Open final when Del Potro stunned Federer to win. That would should be a cracker!
- -
TOMIC 4-6 2-6 2-6 – GAME, SET & MATCH – Federer reaches his 31st consecutive Grand Slam quarter-final as he serves out the match with a very cheeky cross court sliced forehand that he cuts short. Tomic would get nowhere near it though even if he ran, which he didn’t!
- - TOMIC 4-6 2-6 2-5 – Credit to Tomic as he holds to love to force Federer to step up and serve out this match. Something, in all likelihood, he won’t have any trouble doing
- - TOMIC 4-6 2-6 1-5 – Federer races through a service hold to 15, slinging an ace down out wide to seal it and leave Tomic serving to stay in this match
- -
TOMIC 4-6 2-6 1-4 – BREAK – A backhand slam dunk from Federer, hands him more break points, and sure enough he does grab it when Tomic fails to deal with his weight of shot and sends a routine forehand long
- - TOMIC 4-6 2-6 1-3 – Federer zips a cross court forehand winner right onto the line to save a break point as Tomic desperately looks for something to get him back in this match. But the Aussie proves he can do it just as well and also flashes a cross court forehand winner to earn him a second chance. Federer saves it again though and eventually goes on to hold when Tomic puts a return of serve into the net
- - TOMIC 4-6 2-6 1-2 – Tomic looks to be cruising towards a love service hold for the first time in a while, only to be pegged back to deuce by Federer. But Tomic holds his nerve and goes on to hold with consecutive off-forehand winners across court
- - TOMIC 4-6 2-6 0-2 – A very quick and easy hold from Federer as he consolidates the break with another backhand winner. That backhand from Federer has been very impressive so far tonight and he is sending a message
- -
TOMIC 4-6 2-6 0-1 – BREAK – Federer continues to have all the answers on Tomic’s serve as he breaks for the fourth time as he flashes another backhand winner down the line off a low ball to grab the first game of the fourth set
- -
TOMIC 4-6 2-6 – SET – Federer races through another service hold, getting things back on track on his serve, and finds a backhand winner down the line to seal the second set. Tomic came back from two sets to love down against Verdasco in the first round but that is highly unlikely against Federer tonight!
- -
TOMIC 4-6 2-5 – BREAK – Federer immediately re-establishes his double break lead, bringing up a break point with a high backhand volley before leaving himself potentially just one game from the second set when Tomic fails to land a forehand
- -
TOMIC 4-6 2-4 – BREAK – Tomic looks back to his camp with a look of “what more can I do” after a lengthy rally that ended in Fed’s favour with a backhand winner. It was break point Tomic but he gets a second chance after a Federer error and this time he does get one of the breaks back when Federer hits a stretched backhand into the net
- -
TOMIC 4-6 1-4 – BREAK – Another backhand winner, this time riffled down the line from the back of the court, sees Federer bring up another three break points. Tomic saves the first with an ace but can do nothing about the second as he sends a backhand long. Federer has the double break lead in this second set
- - TOMIC 4-6 1-3 - Federer brings up three game points with a serve out wide and forehand winner down the opposite line, before consolidating the hold to love with an outrageous, flicked backhand winner down the line. He’s very comfortable with this match-up at the moment, Tomic doesn’t look like he has anything that can hurt him
- -
TOMIC 4-6 1-2 – BREAK - Tomic squanders a first game point with a forehand down the line that drifts wide and a second when his off-forehand across court catches the top of the tape and bounces wide. And Federer goes on to break when Tomic sends a forehand sailing wide. This is getting away from the young Aussie pretty quickly now
- - TOMIC 4-6 1-1 – Tomic slices a low backhand into the net at 0-30 which was a great opportunity to earn himself a break point and the world number three goes on to hold for the loss of no more points with a drop shot and backhand volley winner combo
- - TOMIC 4-6 1-0 – Tomic saves an early break point with a forehand that lands right on the line, confirmed by hawkeye when Federer challenges, and the young Aussie goes on to hold with a sliced backhand that Federer cannot return in play
- -
TOMIC 4-6 – SET – Very straightforward for Federer as he serves out without really being challenged on serve. Tomic played this kind of cat-and-mouse game in the first set against Dolgopolov as well before becoming more aggressive in the second set
- -
TOMIC 4-5 – BREAK – Tomic finds himself a first break point down after a sliced forehand drop shot that goes well wide. And sure enough he does hand Federer the break when another cat-and-mouse backhand drifts long of the baseline. Federer will serve for the first set after the change of ends
- - TOMIC 4-4 – Tomic sends a backhand wide across court to help Federer on his way to another service hold as this set reaches crunch point.
- - TOMIC 4-3 – Federer completely skies a forehand to help Tomic on his way to two game points but the Aussie only needs one as he fires down a massive serve to hold
- - TOMIC 3-3 – Tomic comes close to levelling up at 30-30 when he has Federer up at the net and goes for a cross court forehand passing shot. But he pushes the off-forehand just wide and Federer goes on to hold when Tomic sends a backhand wide across court
- - TOMIC 3-2 – Once again Tomic holds confidently and with very little drama to sneak out in front once again
- - TOMIC 2-2 – Federer dinks a neat backhand sliced drop shot across court off a drop shot from Tomic as he posts a hold to love that sees him level up once again. So far, so confident from both men, certainly Tomic does not appear to be intimated by this match-up, no doubt helped by the fact he faced Federer in the Davis Cup recently
- - TOMIC 2-1 – Tomic drills a forehand down the line as he holds once again without too much drama to stay ahead in the early stages of this match. People are still filing in to Rod Laver Arena
- - TOMIC 1-1 – Federer posts a very quick service hold to get his side of the scoreboard ticking over as well.
- - TOMIC 1-0 – Tomic squanders a first game point with a forehand pulled wide across court but he manages to hold at the second attempt to get off the mark
- - The match that everything has been building towards at Melbourne Park today is just about to get underway as Roger Federer and Bernard Tomic walk out on to court on the Rod Laver Arena
