  1. - - Next up for fourth seed David Ferrer will be a clash with either Serbian eighth seed Janko Tipsarevic or his compatriot, and 10th seed, Nicolas Almagro. Full men's drawsheet

  2. - - FERRER 6-2 6-1 6-4 - GAME, SET & MATCH! Ferrer books his place in a third quarter-final in a row in Melbourne, sealing the match at the first attempt after again bossing the rally from the baseline and drawing the error from Nishikori - a forehand wide down the line

  3. - - FERRER 6-2 6-1 5-4 - BREAK! Ferrer squanders a break point when his rushed backhand passing shot drifts long of the baseline before Nishikori earns himself a game point with a delightful forehand half volley drop shot winner. Stunning. He puts a forehand into the net to waste it and Ferrer earns himself another break point. And this time the Spainard takes full advantage, Nishikori going for a huge winner but hitting well, well long

  4. - - FERRER 6-2 6-1 4-4 - A brilliant game from Ferrer as he stops the run of games in Nishikori's favour with a love service hold that will no doubt go some way to ease the building frustration in the Spaniard

  5. - - FERRER 6-2 6-1 3-4 - Nishikori does brilliantly well to haul himself back into this set, a backhand down the line proving too much for Ferrer as he sends his cross court backhand return well wide across court

  6. - - FERRER 6-2 6-1 3-3 - BREAK! Ferrer produces an absolutely ridiculous angled cross court forehand winner for the opening point of the game but once again he is pegged back to deuce when Nishikori lands a forehand drive volley winner. And the Japanese even earns his self a break back point with a vicious forehand that Ferrer can only return into the net. Nishikori does break back! A second lob goes long from Ferrer, who kicks a chair in frustration at the back of the court

  7. - - FERRER 6-2 6-1 3-2 - Ferrer helps Nishikori to a game point with what should be an easy smash, but one that he puts into the net after getting caught in exactly the wrong position. He quickly levels up at deuce with a sublime forehand winner but Nishikori goes on to hold when Ferrer puts a forehand just milimetres long of the baseline

  8. - - FERRER 6-2 6-1 3-1 - Ferrer is pegged back from 40-0 to deuce by Nishikori before he recovers to set up another game point with a gruelling rally that ends when the Japanese goes for broke on a forehand down the line, only to send the ball just marginally long. And the Spaniard slams the door shut with an ace to consolidate the break

  9. - - FERRER 6-2 6-1 2-1 - BREAK! Brilliant play from Nishikori as he hammers Ferrer from the baseline, biding his time before finding the forehand approach shot winner to save a first break point. But he can do nothing about a second a few points later and Ferrer re-establishes his break advantage with a vicious forehand that Nishikori can only return long

  10. - - FERRER 6-2 6-1 1-1 - BREAK! Nishikori earns himself another three break points with a fearsome cross court forehand winner. He squanders the first with a forehand into the net and then also the second, with a forehand long down the line after running around the ball. But finally he gets the break at the third attempt when Ferrer sends a forehand of his own just marginally long of the baseline

  11. - - FERRER 6-2 6-1 1-0 - BREAK! Ferrer continues his inexorable march towards the quarter-finals as he breaks for the opening game of the third set when Nishikori sends a stretched forehand long. Such are the high standards of Ferrer that he actually hangs his head in frustration when he puts a forehand into the net on the first point of the game

  12. - - FERRER 6-2 6-1 - SET! Incredibly Ferrer finds himself 0-40 down on his serve. Nishikori squanders the first with a flicked backhand well wide after the Spaniard had drawn him into the net. Ferrer saves the second with a huge first serve and forehand winner while he saves the second with some stunning defence before racing up to the net for a backand pick winner. And he goes on to wrap up the set at the first attempt with another great first serve

  13. - - FERRER 6-2 5-1 - Nishikori finally manages to hold a service game, and it's a hold that helps him avoid being on the receiving end of a bagel set. Ferrer will serve for it next though

  14. - - FERRER 6-2 5-0 - A hold for the loss of just the one point for Ferrer leaves himself potentially just one point away from taking this second set

  15. - - FERRER 6-2 4-0 - BREAK! Ferrer is playing in his 41st straight Grand Slam, which is, quite frankly, a ridiculous achievement. That's 10 consecutive years of Grand Slam tennis without an injury. And he has broken to love for a second successive Nishikori game, the Japanese hitting a forehand into the net

  16. - - FERRER 6-2 3-0 - Ferrer races through another quick service hold to consolidate the early break in this second set. The Spaniard drops just the one point on his way to the hold which he seals with an ace. Nishikori has called for the trainer for the change of ends to address some strapping on his left knee, which he has been playing with since the start of the match

  17. - - FERRER 6-2 2-0 - BREAK! Nishikori looks beaten now, body language wise, as he slaps down a double fault to give Ferrer a chance to break yet again. And sure enough a forehand from Ferrer puts Nishikori on the back foot and draws the error from the Japanese. He is broken to love

  18. - - FERRER 6-2 1-0 - Ferrer slaps down his first double fault for the first point of the second set and it seems to inspire Nishikori as he comes up with a stunning angled backhand passing shot winner across court to bring up a break point. But once again the Japanese cannot take advantage and Ferrer goes on to hold, easily getting up to an ill-advised a drop shot from Nishikori and putting his forehand winner down the line unchallenged

  19. - - FERRER 6-2 - SET! This is getting away from Nishikori very fast now as Ferrer quickly earns himself a set point by continuing to get that one extra ball back than the Japanese can deal with. And sure enough the Spaniard takes the set at the first chance, an inside out forehand winner doing the damage off the return of serve

  20. - - FERRER 5-2 - The Spaniard eases through another service hold as Nishikori seeks out the shade at every available opportunity. The Japanese player looks surprisingly fatigued already as Ferrer does enough with an inside out forehand across court, Nishikori returning the ball back into the net

  21. - - FERRER 4-2 - Ferrer is fully into his stride now as he dives around the net and dinks a neat backhand volley winner over the net to get off the mark. And he quickly finds himself level when Nishikori sends a forehand long off a shorter ball. Ferrer even enjoys another break point but Nishikori saves it with a deft backhand half-volley before going on to hold with a solid enough first serve

  22. - - FERRER 4-1 - A much more comfortable service game for Ferrer as he holds to 30, working his way into the net with a vicious forehand approach shot before thumping down a high smash winner across court

  23. - FERRER 3-1 - BREAK! A much tougher service game for Nishikori this time around as Ferrer pushes him all the way to deuce before being handed a break point when Nishikori's cross court forehand goes wide. The Japanese saves it with a big first serve before bringing up another game point with a forehand winner down the line, playing from outsdie the tramlines. Nishikori hits long to squander it before handing Ferrer a break with a double fault. Ouch.

  24. - - FERRER 2-1 - Brilliant play from Nishikori as he makes even a terrier like Ferrer look one step short as he rattles a backhand winner across court on his way to earning himself two break points. The first goes begging when the Japanese puts his forehand approach shot into the net, while Ferrer saves the second with a huge first serve. Ferrer also has to save a third before he can hold when Nishikori sends a backhand return just long

  25. - - FERRER 1-1 - Nishikori has also made a pretty confident start behind his serve as well as he eases through a hold to 15 with a big enough first serve that Ferrer can only send his return sailing long

  26. - - FERRER 1-0 - This is a very confident start from Nishikori as he earns himself a break point with a backhand volley winner. The Japanese player stands way back to receive and fails to get his flailing forehand return into play after Ferrer comes up with a bullet down the line. And eventually the Spaniard comes through it with an ace, again down the centre of the court

  27. - - These two have faced each other three times before with Nishikori, perhaps surprisingly, leading the head-to-head by two wins to one. Nishikori won their first meeting, at the US Open in 2008, before Ferrer hit back with in Tokyo in 2011. But Nishikori also won at the Olympics last year, albeit having to bounce back from a set down

  28. - - Next up on Rod Laver Arena will be fourth seeded Spaniard David Ferrer taking on Japan's Kei Nishikori
