  2. It is normal for every normal human being to have some iota of fear or pessimism about the future or prospect of an important event, like the world cup. I think PELE wasn't worried because his country is unable to stage the tournament ,but he fears for good and world-class organization. But i would like to encourage him that most of the troubles we are scared of hardly come to pass. If south africa did, then brazil can do even better. Fifa and others wil certainly assist. I'M ECHE AMOS NEHEMIAH,NIGERIA.

  8. Well i am from Brazil and i beleive we will have a wonderfulll world cup..
We are an third world country but we are reaching the top in some years i know that.
Brazil is a tropical, beautifull and welcoming country and dont forget people we know how to play football very well.
We have always respect any nation in the world , i was very surprised when i read this article, and felt very upset.
But never mind, the end of the day we have sunshine every day, something money can not buy...
We have samba, beaches, lovely food and the most important thing RESPECT

  9. jameshi10 - Actually, the idea of a single American continent isn't a "USA idea". In the USA, schools teach that there are two continents that make up America. North America (the continent) is everything from Panama up - yes Mexico is in North America. The South American continent is everything from Colombia south. The idea that there is only one continent is taught in virtually every Latin American country. Mexico included. So it is more a "Spanish idea" than a "USA idea".

  11. Canada, alaska, brazil...wer is the comp' taking place? Stop goin on about other nations and their cultures, I dont give a @#$% if you've been there or not.I was under the impression that we are talkin footy ere or av I missed somthing. P.s. Pontins in Southport has a good transport network, lots of hotels and B+@#$%. There you are, lets all go there for a laugh.

From Gerry, on Sun 20 Feb 22:38
  12. Err Danny H I hate to tell you but America is two continents. It's an "USA" idea that it isn't. Canada and USA [possibly greenland aswell] make up North America and Mexico downwards makes up South America.

Finally I'm sure both Canada and Brazil are both perfectly lovly countries to visit with their own unique cultures and atmospheres, and I personally can't wait for the 2014 world cup it looks like it will be good.

  15. As a Brazilian iam realy proud of my country hosting this big event,Brazil is a nation where everything happens last minute,so Pele don't you worried...but if anyone can help any how,you are very welcome to.Every small help will contribute to the sucess of this event...

From Isabel, on Sun 20 Feb 20:14
  16. Clearly Pele is a worried man because he was once a great football player, living a dream of playing for his country, yet he feels that transport issues are not being addressed. But he need not worry as this will be sorted out I'm sure. You will get no more passionate a man as Pele about his country staging the World Cup, so forget all this negative talk people! I've been to Brazil a couple of times, & I've travelled through it. The people are very kind & considerate. But this can be a dangerous place, & the authorities will have to do their upmost to contain all the bad elements. South Africa did it much to the surprise of the world's press who said it would be a bloodbath! So come on & give Brazil a chance, I will be going out for the tournament no question.

  18. Comment 38 nick, it was not only the British that were killing the locals. You need to include the French as well. To THE CANUCK2011, a well written piece mate. People need to re-read what you wrote and then maybe they will see with clear eyes and minds what you have written.

  19. What's all the fuss about old empire issues! I thought this was a place where you could submit a comment about a related story, & not going off on one about something else! I know Pele is worried about Brazil being ready to host the World Cup, but it will be ready there is no question about it. Forget all the talk about switching the thing to another country, it won't happen. Look at the Commonwealth Games in India, & all the uproar about that not being ready, but it went ahead all the same.

From ROBERT, on Sun 20 Feb 19:09
  20. I don't believe patriotic people like Sabrina (6) say such negative things about her own country and end off saying she is very "confident the cheer" will prevail and the organization will deliver. Clearly this person is ambiguous and contradictory. As for Pele, who clearly is a has-been and lacks the stardom of the likes of Maradona and his peers, every time he appears in the public scene it is either to criticise the national team (as early as Italia 90) or the efforts his country has to make to ensure a successful world cup. My feeling is that he should either help his country's cause or SHUT UP! If there is any element of embarrassment to the Brazilian people, then its source is undoubtibly arising from the likes of Pele and their malignent attitude, which do much to dent public opinion on their suitabilty as hosts and undermine the confidence of their countrymen and women, which will have to strive to put on a good show for the world to enjoy. The complexity of this task should never be underestimated!

Much was also said about the rate of crime in South Africa before the staging of last world cup, with terrorist threats, delays in the construction of the stadia, deficient infrastructure and transportantion network, wild animals running around in players' hotels, natural disasters, political turmoil, economic exploitation of the tourists, aids, makumba, etc, etc, being a constant concern in the media-yet a memorable tournament ensued. So PLEASE, let us give the Brazilian people a chance at providing us with what they do best and AT LEAST give them the benefit of a doubt as well.

To finish off, it is absolutely pointless to hold history discussions on the British Empire or draw comparisons between the living standards in the UK and those in Canada, USA, Australia or Timbaktou, when clearly this is not the central topic.
