Reigning Olympic giant slalom champion Carlo Janka has undergone heart surgery earlier than expected.

The Swiss skier has been suffering from sudden changes in heart rate and was originally intending to have a corrective operation at the end of the season.

But surgery was brought forward after his symptoms became worse and he went under the knife at a private clinic in Zurich on February 23.

The 24-year-old hopes to recover full fitness in time to compete at the World Cup giant slalom event at Kranjska Gora, Slovenia at the weekend.

The condition was diagnosed by Swiss medical officials in December, but information was not made public until February in an effort to avoid disrupting race preparations.

Janka could only manage a seventh-place finish when defending his crown at Garmisch-Partenkirchen five days before the operation.

"The timing after the World Cup in Garmisch was just right, and therefore we decided to have the surgery," said Janka.

"Right now I do not feel any big difference from before."
