Marseille climb a place as they reap rewards for good form at home and in Europe in our European rankings.

HOW IT WORKS

This season we are using the Hypercube Infostrada Euro Club Index, which scientifically analyses hundreds of thousands of matches from the top divisions in all European nations as well as Europa League and Champions League games.

The Index takes into account all matches played over an eight-year period but with recent results carrying more weight than older ones. The most recent result has 20 times more impact than a result of three years ago.

The performance of a league's teams in Champions League and Europa League reflects the rise or fall of the sporting level in that league. So, for example, if English teams perform well in Europe, all Premier League teams receive a small bonus in their ECI score. The ranking and its predictive power are thus made even more accurate.

Manchester United's creditable if tedious draw at Marseille was followed by a regulation maiming of Wigan, sending them within 18 points of second-placed Real Madrid and a couple of victories shy of Barcelona.

Arsenal's small improvement comes on account of their Champions League win against Barca being gauged as more points-worthy than a minor Cup loss, although Birmingham and Arsenal fans will argue that to be a false representation of what would have been a welcome trophy for the Gunners.

Tottenham are punished for their inactivity at the weekend, with the Tuesday loss to Blackpool their only competitive action since beating Milan. They slip two spots to 11th.

Otherwise it is a superb week for the English sides in the top 100, all of whom move up apart from Blackburn, who slip a place in defeat. West Ham's good form sees them enter the top 100, moving up 20-odd places following victory over Liverpool.

Rangers, meanwhile, retake the SPL mantle from Celtic after a brief slip following Old Firm defeat. Their brilliant draw at Sporting plays a part in that.
