Giro d'Italia - Giro stage moved over safety worries
The finish of the 17th stage of the 2011 Giro d'Italia has been moved to Tirano over health and safety fears.
Organisers feared that they could not guarantee the necessary safety standards for competitors and fans at the original finish in Sondrio, which would have been the longest stage of the race at 246km.
Instead, riders will now compete on a 230km route from Feltre to Tirano on the May 25th stage.
Giro organisers also announced that the 2012 race will start in Denmark.
The three-week event will start from Herning on May 5 next year with an individual time trial and will stay in the Scandinavian country for three days.
"We look at this agreement with great pleasure," Giro director Angelo Zomegnan said in a statement.
It will be the 10th time the Giro starts on non-Italian soil. In 2010 the race started from Amsterdam.
