McGovern guarded on play-off hopes

Carlisle winger Jon-Paul McGovern remains philosophical about his side's chances of making the play-offs.

The Cumbrians' 4-1 win over Exeter at the weekend has left them one point behind their rivals for a top-six finish, Stevenage and Notts County, with a last-day clash at Oldham ahead of them.

"At the start of the week we said that we just had to go into these final two games looking to pick up maximum points and see what happens elsewhere," McGovern told the club's official website.

"We've had plenty of ups and downs throughout the campaign with last-minute goals in our favour and against us, but we're going into the final game of the season still in contention and that's something we can be pleased with."

McGovern said his side had missed influential striker Lee Miller, whose season ended prematurely last month due to a groin injury.

"It's not really been a secret that we've struggled a bit since Lee's injury," McGovern added. "But any team would find it hard to replace a player of his quality in their side.

"He's a focal point and his hold-up play brings others into play so we've changed things around a bit by looking to get it out wide and put more crosses into the box, which as the scoreline shows, paid off [on Saturday]."
