Borussia Dortmund kept alive their hopes of qualifying from Champions League Group F with a vital 1-0 home win over Olmypiacos thanks to Kevin Grosskreutz's superb early strike.

The tie at Signal Iduna Park an important one for both sides as they chase Marseille and Arsenal at the top of the group.

Dortmund should have found themselves in front after just three minutes. Ivan Perisic received the ball 10 yards out but the Croatian midfielder struck his effort over after the ball had been pulled back to him.

Grosskreutz then gave the German champions the lead after just seven minutes. Mario Goetze teed up the young German and he blasted his effort from 25 yards past the helpless Balazs Megyeri in the Olympiacos goal.

Olympiacos had chances of their own as they looked to counter the dominant Dortmund.

Kevin Mirallas almost beat Roman Weidenfeller at his near post from a low strike but the German keeper gathered the ball at the second attempt.

The hosts looked more comfortable on the ball but neither side were creating any clear-cut chances in the first half although an off-balance Francois Modesto went close for Olympiacos when he blazed over from close range.

Into the second half and Olympiacos almost got straight back on level terms. Jose Holebas found himself in enough space to get a shot off but his low fierce strike was pushed away by Weidenfeller.

Down the other end the impressive Moritz Leitner brought Megyeri in action after a quickly-taken free-kick, with the keeper collecting the ball with ease.

On the hour mark Robert Lewandowski almost doubled Dortmund's lead as the striker was aware enough to intercept a poor back pass. The Polish striker rounded the keeper but saw his shot rebound off the post.

Olympiacos began to grown into the game as it went on and went close themselves when Holebas got his head to a ball from a corner but he saw his effort go narrowly wide of the Dortmund goal.

In a game of few chances it was clear that both sides would have to make chances count and deep into stoppage time Olympiacos failed to do so. A long free-kick was pumped into the box and Olof Mellberg got his head to the ball, but the former Aston Villa man could not direct his header on target.

It was a huge win for the German champions: the win not only ensures they are still playing for a spot in the last 16 of the Champions League, but also boosts their chances of qualification for the Europa League with a third place finish.
