France's Gael Monfils cruised through his first-round match at ATP Johannesburg with a 6-2 6-1 win over Slovakia's Dominik Hrbaty.
The top seed took just 53 minutes to dismiss his opponent and set up a second-round clash against fellow Frenchman Josselin Ouanna.
Spain's David Ferrer also came through a one-sided encounter as he beat Karol Beck 6-1 7-5, but his compatriot Feliciano Lopez endured a tough match against Monegasque qualifier Benjamin Balleret.
Balleret recovered from losing the first set 6-1 to take the second in a tie-break, but Lopez pulled through by winning the third set 6-3.
Fourth and sixth seeds Marco Chiudinelli and Xavier Malisse both crashed out in the first round to world number 141 Dustin Brown and world number 162 Somdev Devvarman respectively.
