If you hadn't been a footballer, what career would you have had instead?

I was good at technical drawing, so a draftsman or that sort of thing.

What was your first car?

A brown Fiesta. I paid £700 in cash for it at Charing Cross in Glasgow, and it got stuck in second gear on my way home on the motorway.

What is the greatest song ever recorded?

My Way, by Frank Sinatra. Maybe it's a generation thing.

What's your TV guilty pleasure?

It's quite bad, but I'll give it away... I'm watching the re-runs of Dallas. Get on it, it's first class.

If somebody made a film of your life, which actor would you like to play you?

I'll tell you what... If you get up a couple of shots of Nicholas Cage, you'll get why I'm saying that. I don't know if I'm paying him a compliment there or not.

What's the nicest place you've ever visited?

Rome. It's amazing the number of cities I have played in, but you never get a chance to see them. I went there for a long weekend a couple of years ago, and it was awe-inspiring.

If you could throw a dinner party for some guests from any period in time, dead or alive, who would they be?

Jack Nicholson and Robert De Niro are two who are nailed on. I'm big admirers of them. I'd like William Wallace to come and join me as well, and also Seve Ballesteros. That would make a nice foursome.

What would you cook for them?

I'm not bad in the kitchen. I go to Portugal quite a lot, as I've got a place there, and there is a dish they call cataplana. It's basically a fish stew. A big bowl of stock, tomatoes, potatoes and then you just throw in the fresh fish that you get from the market.

What is your favourite sport apart from football?

I'm a big golf fan. I got beaten in a play-off for Scotland Boys once when I was 15. I was scratch as a kid. I'm decent, but there are a lot of footballers who are good golfers.

Are you looking forward to the Olympics, and have you got tickets?

I haven't applied for any, but I will try. I'm looking forward to it. The tickets I'd love to get would be for the gymnastics. I would like to see that live.
