Dion Dublin has said the Olympic football tournament in London next year will be a roaring success as fans get behind Team GB.

Former Coventry striker Dublin (pictured alongside double Olympian Dave Long) believes that fans accustomed to watching their club sides and national team will enjoy backing the amalgamated representative side in July and August.

“The tournament will be a success because traditional football fans just love football,” he told Eurosport. “They feel very strongly towards their own country, but together as Team GB they will all be pulling the same way.

“The positive side of football needs to be put into kids’ heads – the stadiums will be full up with a great atmosphere. I’m hoping that even the hardcore fans who support their club and country would jump at the chance to support Team GB.

“The tournament is going to be held in great stadiums like the Ricoh Arena in Coventry, where men and women can enjoy a family day out – if you have three children of 14, 12 and 10 it will only cost you that much, 14, 12 and 10, to get them in.

“It will be a spectacular event with full houses and a carnival atmosphere.”

Dublin is of the opinion that David Beckham should be picked by Stuart Pearce because players look up to him and he would also help sell tickets.

“They have a great opportunity of winning the tournament as they have the right manager in place in Stuart Pearce. He knows the players inside out,” he continued.

“Wembley is a great home for the tournament and the players should enjoy it. David Beckham should be involved on the playing side as a lot of players want to play with him and he will sell tickets… If Ryan Giggs was picked, he should be made captain!

“Of the young players that could feature for GB, Kyle Walker is having a great season, Theo Walcott and Jack Wilshere have got to feature if they don’t go to the European Championships, likewise Gabriel Agbonlahor. And Bobby Zamora – we need a strong squad that wants to be there.

“There are more countries to choose our players from, although the majority of players will be English.

“[And] I’ll tell you what – I’d like to see a game between that GB side and the England national team!”
