Bundesliga - Rummenigge: Gustavo will be key
Bayern Munich chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge claims that the signing of Luiz Gustavo and the return to fitness of Arjen Robben will put the club in a position to target treble glory this season.
The Bavarian giants have signed Gustavo (pictured) from Hoffenheim for a reported £13 million, while Robben is on the verge of returning from muscle injuries that have kept him out of action since the World Cup.
And Rummenigge believes the double boost is just what Bayern need to turn things round after a patchy start to the season that has left them fifth in the Bundesliga heading into the winter break.
"We are going to be attacking in all three competitions," he said.
"With Robben and Gustavo, we are stronger than we were in the first half of the season.
"We want to knock Inter (Milan) out of the Champions League, win the DFB-Pokal and then we will have to see about the league.
"I am convinced that we will gain far more points than we did in the first half of the season.
"Gustavo can help us out immediately either at left full-back or at centre-back. He can also play in the centre of the midfield.
"The lad has character and he was the player (coach) Louis van Gaal really wanted."
Rummenigge added that Bayern will not sign any more new players in the January window, ending speculation that the reigning Bundesliga champions could sign Everton full-back Leighton Baines this month.
"Seriously, we are not going to sign any more players in January. We cannot force him (Baines) to join us. He would rather live in Liverpool than Munich, and that's that."
