Roddick opens with win in Brisbane
Defending men's champion Andy Roddick has kicked off his season with a comfortable 6-3 6-2 Brisbane International first-round win over local wildcard Marinko Matosevic.
The world number eight, seeded second behind Robin Soderling, took just 72 minutes to blast Matosevic off the court as he started his build-up to the first grand slam of the year.
Roddick said winning the title in Brisbane last year had been a significant factor in him reaching the Australian Open quarter-finals, where he lost to Marin Cilic.
"The pressure is always to use this tournament to get me ready for Melbourne, it worked last year so I'm going to do it again this year," the 28-year-old American, four-times a semi-finalist in Melbourne, said.
The Brisbane International runs until January 9.
